Custom Silk Invitation Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom silk invitation boxes are rigid boxes covered in silk or satin-effect fabric that hold a luxury invitation suite, often with a ribbon pull, a fitted card insert and the couple's or host's initials foiled on the lid. They turn an invitation into a keepsake that guests remember long after the event.

An Invitation That Arrives Like a Gift

Most invitations arrive in an envelope and are pinned to a fridge. A boxed invitation is different. The weight of a rigid box, the soft sheen of fabric and the moment of lifting the lid all tell the guest that this event matters. For weddings, milestone birthdays, gala dinners and product launches, that first impression sets the tone before anyone has even read the date.

Boxed invitations also hold more than one card. A full suite might include the main invitation, a reply card, a map or travel card, a menu choice card and perhaps a small gift such as a wax-sealed note, a sachet of lavender or a pressed flower. A fitted insert keeps every piece in its place, so nothing slides or bends in transit.

Many guests keep the box afterwards. Couples often find their invitation boxes holding jewellery, letters or photographs years later, which is a lovely reason to choose a design that will age gracefully. p2 Paper-wrapped versions of the same idea are on our luxury invitation boxes page.

Silk Invitation Boxes: How They Are Made

The core of the box is greyboard, a dense, rigid board usually 1.5–2 mm thick. It is cut and formed into a lid and base, or a hinged box, then wrapped in fabric. Real silk is beautiful but delicate and costly, so most boxes use silk-effect or satin-effect fabrics that give a similar lustre and handle far better in production and in the post.

Inside, the box is lined with paper or a matching fabric, and a card or foam insert is cut to hold the invitation suite. The lid can sit loosely on the base, be hinged along one edge, or close with a hidden magnet. Ribbon pulls, ties and bows are added by hand at the finishing stage. p1 The greyboard build is explained on our greyboard boxes page.

  • Lift-off lid: classic presentation with a ribbon pull to lift the insert
  • Hinged magnetic lid: opens like a book and stays closed in the post
  • Drawer style: a fabric sleeve with a pull-out tray
  • Clamshell: a flat case that opens fully to show the whole suite

Choosing Fabric Colour and Texture

Ivory, champagne, blush and soft grey are the most requested fabric colours for weddings, because they pair with almost any stationery palette. Deep navy, emerald and burgundy suit winter or evening events and black-tie galas, while dusty sage and lilac have become popular for garden and spring weddings.

Texture matters as much as colour. A smooth satin-effect fabric gives a high shine that looks glamorous under lights. A matt silk-effect or dupion-style fabric has a subtle slub and a more natural look. Linen-effect fabrics give a relaxed, rustic feel that suits barn and countryside venues.

Ask for fabric swatches before deciding. Photographs on screen never quite show how a fabric catches the light, and we are happy to send a few options so you can hold them against your invitation card.

Fabric is also forgiving of small knocks, so a box that has travelled to a guest still looks fresh on arrival. p3 Foil on fabric is compared with foil on paper in the guide to print and finish options.

Personalising the Lid

Foil stamping is the classic way to personalise a fabric lid. Gold, rose gold, silver and copper foils sit well on most fabric colours, and a monogram, the couple's names or a crest can be stamped crisply. Blind debossing presses the design into the fabric without foil, giving a subtle, tone-on-tone look that feels very refined.

For larger events, such as galas or corporate dinners, the host's logo can be foiled on the lid and the guest's name added on a separate card inside. That keeps one design for every box while still feeling personal when it is opened.

Keep fine detail to a sensible size. Very thin lines and small serif text can fill in on textured fabric, so we check every lid design on the proof and suggest adjustments if anything is likely to blur.

Some couples add a small printed belly band around the inner cards in the same colour as the foil. It ties the inside to the lid design and keeps the suite together when guests lift it out. p3 The invitation itself is covered on our wedding invitations page.

Sizing Around the Invitation Suite

Start with the largest card in the suite. A 5 x 7 inch invitation measures about 127 x 178 mm, so an inside of about 135 x 185 mm leaves room to lift it out. An A5 invitation at 148 x 210 mm needs an inside of around 155 x 218 mm. Depth depends on how many layers sit in the box: a single card needs only 15–20 mm, while a suite with a gift may need 40–50 mm.

If the box will be posted, check the outer dimensions and weight against postal bands, and plan a plain outer mailer to protect the fabric. Hand-delivered invitations can be a little larger and more elaborate.

Weight is easy to underestimate. A rigid fabric box with a suite of heavy cards can weigh 250–400 g before the outer mailer is added, so weigh a finished sample before buying postage for the whole guest list. p2 The guide to measuring a product covers layered card suites.

Weddings, Galas and Private Previews

Couples planning luxury weddings are the most common buyers, often ordering through a wedding planner or stationer. Wedding stationers use our boxes to complete their own invitation designs. Hotels and venues use them to invite guests to opening events, and charities send boxed invitations for gala dinners to key supporters. Corporate event teams use them for product launches and VIP evenings, and families use them for milestone birthdays and anniversaries.

Luxury brands also use them to invite press and top customers to private previews, where the box itself signals the exclusivity of the evening. p1 Launch events sometimes use a book-style box with a magnetic flap for the same effect.

Weigh a Finished Box Before Buying Stamps for the Guest List

A fabric invitation box with a full suite weighs 250 to 400 g before the mailer goes on, and the postage for two hundred of them is a cost couples rarely budget for. Ask for one finished sample with your cards inside, weigh it in its outer mailer and price the postage before you fix the quantity. Then send the largest card size, the number of pieces in the suite and whether a gift sits on top, which decides the depth.

Ask for fabric swatches rather than choosing from a screen, and keep the foil design clear of fine lines that fill in on textured cloth. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day with the minimum set per job, so an intimate wedding is as welcome as a gala.

The free proof shows the lid personalisation and the insert layout. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the boxes reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery; because they are hand-finished, allow extra time for assembling and addressing. Stationers who print the cards themselves usually add matching envelopes for the reply cards in the same job.

Silk Invitation Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering silk invitation boxes.

Is the fabric real silk?

Most clients choose silk-effect or satin-effect fabrics, which look very similar and handle production and post much better. Real silk can be quoted on request.

Can I see fabric samples before ordering?

Yes. We can send swatches so you can check colour and texture against your invitation card in real light.

Can each guest's name be on the lid?

Individual foiled names are possible but add time. Many hosts foil a monogram on every lid and add the guest's name on an inner card.

Which foil colour works on ivory fabric?

Gold and rose gold sit beautifully on ivory and champagne. Silver suits grey and navy fabrics.

How do I keep the invitation suite from moving?

A fitted card or foam insert holds each piece. A ribbon pull under the insert lets guests lift everything out easily.

Can these boxes be posted?

They can, inside a plain outer mailer that protects the fabric. Check the packed weight and size against postal bands before addressing.

Can you supply the invitation cards as well?

We can print inner cards to fit, or size the box around cards from your own stationer. Send a sample card so the insert is cut to it.

What is the best colour for a winter wedding?

Deep navy, emerald and burgundy look rich for winter or evening events. Ivory with gold foil remains a timeless option year-round.

How far ahead of a wedding should silk invitation boxes be ordered?

About three months before the invitations go out. Allow a day for the quote, a week for swatches and proof, 4 to 7 working days for production and 2 to 3 working days for free tracked UK mainland delivery, then two or three weeks to assemble, address and post.

Can I order a small number for an intimate wedding?

Yes. Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a short run for a small guest list is fine.

What if a box is damaged on arrival?

Report it within 10 days and we will remake or refund the affected boxes. A photo of the box is all we need.
