Custom Turned Edge Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom turned edge boxes are rigid boxes where the printed paper wrap is folded over the top edges and into the inside of the box, leaving no raw board visible anywhere. Luxury brands choose them for watches, jewellery, fragrance, spirits and gift sets where every detail of the presentation counts.

What Turned Edge Means

Rigid boxes are made by wrapping a printed or coloured paper around a sturdy greyboard core. On a basic rigid box, the wrap stops at the top edge, and the cut edge of the board may be visible. On a turned edge box, the wrap is cut slightly larger and folded over the rim, then pressed down inside the walls.

The result is a box where every visible surface, outside and over the rim, is covered in the finished paper. Edges look crisp and rounded, corners are neat, and there is no grey board showing when the lid is lifted. It is the finish associated with high-end presentation boxes, and customers notice the difference even if they cannot quite name it.

Turned edges also make the box more durable. The fold over the rim protects the board edge from fraying and wear, so the box looks good for longer when it is kept and reused.

The craft involved is part of the appeal. Turned edge boxes are assembled with care, and the precision of the folds at each corner is something buyers of luxury goods appreciate, often without consciously noticing it.

Styles of Custom Turned Edge Boxes

The turned edge technique can be applied to most rigid box constructions.

The right style depends on the product and the unboxing you want to create. A two-piece lid feels classic and suits watches and jewellery. A book-style box adds drama for gift sets. A drawer box creates a slower reveal, which suits collectors' items and limited editions.

  • Two-piece lid and base: the classic presentation box, with a lid that lifts off to reveal the product.
  • Lid and base with neck: an inner collar rises above the base so the lid sits on it, giving a precise fit.
  • Book-style box: a hinged lid that opens like a book cover, often with a magnetic closure.
  • Drawer box: a turned edge tray that slides into a wrapped sleeve.
  • Shoulder box: a base, a visible shoulder band and a lid, for an elegant layered look.

Papers and Wraps

The wrap paper defines the look and feel of the box. Printed art paper takes full-colour designs and photographs. Coloured specialty papers come in a wide range of shades and textures, from smooth matte to linen and leather-grain. Metallic papers add sheen for jewellery and fragrance.

Because the wrap turns over the rim, the inside edge of the box shows the same paper as the outside. Some brands choose a contrasting paper to line the inside walls, creating a frame effect when the lid is lifted.

Thicker papers turn over edges more crisply. We will recommend a wrap that suits your design and holds a neat fold at the rim.

Colour choice deserves time. Deep, rich shades such as navy, black, forest green and burgundy are popular for luxury presentation, while soft neutrals and pastels suit skincare and fragrance. Colours on screen can differ from paper, so describe the shade you want and we will suggest the closest wrap. Embossed linen and leather-grain papers are shown on the textured cardstock boxes page.

Finishes and Details

Turned edge boxes pair naturally with premium finishes. Foil blocking on the lid, embossed or debossed logos, and spot UV on a matte wrap all look their best on a well-made rigid box.

Inside, a foam, card or fabric-covered insert holds the product in place and frames it when the box is opened. Ribbon pull tabs help lift the product or insert out. A printed message inside the lid adds a personal touch.

Small details make a big difference: rounded corners, a thumb notch on the base to lift the lid, and a satin ribbon to tie the box closed.

Keep the design restrained. Turned edge boxes are about quality and precision, so a single foil logo or a subtle embossed pattern usually looks more refined than a busy, fully printed lid.

Where These Boxes Are Used

Turned edge rigid boxes are used wherever presentation matters:

What these categories share is that the box is part of the value. A watch or a bottle of fine spirits is expected to arrive in packaging that matches its price, and a turned edge box meets that expectation in a quiet, assured way.

Many recipients keep these boxes for years, using them to store the original product or other treasured items.

  • Watches and fine jewellery
  • Fragrance and luxury skincare
  • Spirits, wine accessories and glassware
  • Corporate and executive gifts
  • Premium stationery and pens
  • Limited editions and collectors' sets

Sizing and Product Fit

Rigid boxes are built to size, so accurate measurements are important. Measure the product at its widest points and decide how it will sit: lying flat, standing upright or held in an insert. Then add space for the insert and a little clearance.

Rigid boxes do not fold flat, so they take up more storage space and cost more to ship than folding cartons. If you post them, an outer mailer keeps them pristine. Consider how many you will store and order quantities to suit.

Products sold in sets need careful planning. Lay all the items out on a table in the arrangement you want, measure the total area, and send us a photograph. It helps us design an insert that presents each item well.

Ordering Turned Edge Boxes

Send us the product dimensions, your preferred style, wrap and finish ideas and quantities. A custom quote arrives by email within one working day; turned edge rigid boxes cost more than folding cartons, and we will set out the price for your exact specification.

Your free proof shows the box, wrap layout and insert. Production takes 4–7 working days once approved, and delivery to UK mainland addresses is free and tracked, usually 2–3 working days. Minimums are quoted per job. If anything arrives damaged or misprinted, report it within 10 days for a reprint or refund.

If you are planning a launch, consider ordering a small first run to check the fit and finish with your actual products, then a larger run once everything is confirmed.

Tell us how the boxes will be used, whether on a shop counter, in a gift hamper or posted to customers, so we can suggest the most suitable construction.

Turned Edge Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering turned edge boxes.

What is the difference between turned edge and standard rigid boxes?

On a turned edge box, the wrap folds over the rim and inside, so no board edge is visible. It looks neater and wears better.

Can the inside walls be a different colour?

Yes. A contrasting lining paper inside creates a framed look when the lid is lifted.

Which paper turns over edges most neatly?

Slightly thicker papers hold a crisp fold at the rim. We recommend a wrap that suits both your design and the turned edge finish.

Can turned edge boxes have magnetic closures?

Book-style turned edge boxes often use hidden magnets in the flap and base for a satisfying close.

Do rigid boxes fold flat?

No. Rigid boxes arrive made up, so allow space for storage. Collapsible rigid styles are a separate option if space is tight.

Can I add foil to the lid?

Foil blocking, embossing and debossing all suit turned edge boxes and look especially crisp on matte wraps.

What insert works best for a watch?

A cushion insert or a foam insert with a fabric cover holds a watch securely and presents it well.

Are turned edge boxes suitable for posting?

They are sturdy, but an outer mailer keeps the wrap free from scuffs and courier marks.

Can I have a printed message inside the lid?

Inside lid printing is available and is a lovely way to greet the recipient.

How do I measure for a rigid box?

Measure the product at its widest points and tell us how it should sit. We add space for the insert and clearance.
