From Bouquet to Box Arrangement

Box arrangements have changed the way many florists work. Instead of a hand-tied bouquet that needs a vase the moment it arrives, a flower box is a finished display: blooms packed tightly into floral foam or a water source inside a structured box, ready to sit on a table without any further work. Recipients love them because there is nothing to do, and florists love them because they travel well and photograph beautifully for social media and websites.

The box itself becomes part of the gift. A round hat box in a deep colour with a foil logo looks luxurious on a dressing table. A square box packed with roses in a grid has a clean, modern feel. A drawer box that slides open to reveal a small arrangement and a chocolate compartment turns flowers into a full gift set. Because these boxes are sturdy, many people keep them for storage once the flowers are gone.

Flower Box Shapes and Styles

We make several constructions for florists and rose box sellers. The right one depends on your arrangements, delivery method and price point: Hat box arrangements use the deeper build on our round gift boxes for hat box arrangements page.

  • Round hat box with a lift-off lid, the signature style for roses and mixed arrangements
  • Square box with a lid for grid-style rose arrangements
  • Box with a clear lid so the flowers show without opening
  • Drawer box with a flower compartment and a separate gift drawer
  • Open-top display box for counter sales and hand delivery
  • Long box for stems laid flat, a classic way to present a dozen roses

Fresh Flowers and Water Protection

Fresh flower boxes need protection from water. Floral foam holds a lot of moisture, and it will soak into plain board and soften the box within hours. We line flower boxes with a waterproof liner or a water-resistant inner layer, and many florists also place a plastic tray or liner bag inside before adding the foam. The aim is that the outside of the box stays dry and firm for as long as the flowers last.

For preserved roses, which need no water, a lining is still worth having to protect the box from oils and dyes used in the preservation process. A velvet or paper lining also gives the interior a finished look when the lid is lifted.

Water is not the only enemy. Condensation forms when an arrangement moves from a cold workroom into a warm car, and a box with no protection can show water marks on its outer wrap. A laminated wrap resists this better than an uncoated paper, so if your flowers are kept in a cold store before delivery, choose a laminated finish for the outside as well as a liner inside. Check, too, that any ribbon glued to the lid is attached with an adhesive that copes with damp conditions. Hand-tied bouquets that are not boxed are wrapped in our flower wrapping paper for bouquets.

Sizing Custom Flower Boxes

Flower boxes are usually sized by how many stems or roses they hold. A small round box around 100 mm in diameter might hold three to six roses, enough for a sweet gesture or an add-on to a larger order. A medium box around 160 to 200 mm suits a dozen roses or a compact mixed arrangement. Larger boxes from 250 mm upwards hold generous mixed designs and statement pieces.

Height matters as much as width. A box for fresh flowers needs enough depth for foam plus a little rim above it, so that blooms can sit just above the edge with the lid on or off. Measure your foam blocks and the height of a typical bloom head above them, and we will calculate the box depth. If you sell both fresh and preserved arrangements, the preserved ones often need less depth because no foam is used.

Keep your size range tight. Most florists find that three round sizes and one square or long box cover almost every order. Fewer sizes mean simpler stock, faster arranging, because staff learn exactly how many stems each box takes, and lower prices because each size is ordered in a larger run. Our guide to measuring an arrangement for a box covers stem height and lid clearance.

Printing and Finishes for a Florist Brand

Most flower box brands keep the design simple: a solid colour box with the logo in foil on the lid, sometimes repeated on the side. Black, white, blush pink, sage green and navy are popular, as they let the flowers provide the colour. A soft-touch or velvet-feel wrap adds a tactile luxury, and a satin ribbon round the lid finishes the look.

When your flower selection changes, rather than redesigning the box, swap the ribbon, tissue or card. This keeps the box consistent and lets you order larger quantities, while the details move with your stock. A printed message card slipped into a slot on the lid is a lovely touch for gift orders. Foil, soft-touch and gloss are compared in foil and lamination options compared.

Delivering Flower Boxes Safely

Box arrangements travel best upright and level. Many florists use a delivery carrier or an outer box with a die-cut cradle that holds the flower box still on the back seat of a van. For courier deliveries, an outer corrugated box with a fitted insert stops movement and keeps the arrangement facing up. Fresh flowers also need air, so avoid sealing them in airtight packaging for long journeys.

A handle on the box, either a ribbon or a rope handle threaded through the lid, makes the arrangement easy to carry on the final walk to the door and adds to the sense of occasion.

Give your drivers a simple instruction card too: carry by the base, keep the box upright and hand it over with the lid facing the recipient. Small habits like these keep arrangements looking exactly as they left the workroom. Courier journeys need an outer shipping box for couriers around the flower box.

Build One Arrangement and Measure It in Its Box

Florists get the best result by making the arrangement before the box is sized. Put the foam or the preserved roses in a plain box of roughly the right size, trim the stems to the height you want above the rim, and measure the finished piece: diameter or length, and height from the base to the tallest bloom. Those two figures set the box and the lid clearance. Then say whether the flowers are fresh or preserved, because fresh arrangements need a waterproof liner and preserved ones need a dye-proof lining. Choose the shape, round, square or long stem, and the colour, and send a vector logo for the lid; we show the box and the lining on a free proof. A custom quote comes by email within one working day with minimums quoted per job. Boxes are made in 4 to 7 working days after approval and delivered free and tracked to UK mainland addresses. Preserved roses that should be seen without opening the box go in our clear lid gift boxes for preserved roses.

Flower Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering flower boxes.

Will fresh flowers soak through the box?

We line flower boxes with a waterproof liner or water-resistant inner layer, and many florists add a plastic tray before the foam. This keeps the outside dry and firm.

What size box holds a dozen roses?

A round box around 180 mm in diameter suits a dozen roses packed tightly. Stem length and bloom size can change this, so send us your typical arrangement.

Can I get flower boxes with a clear lid?

Yes. A clear lid shows the arrangement without opening the box, which is popular for counter displays and preserved roses.

Do preserved roses need a lining?

They do not need water protection, but a lining stops the dyes and oils in preserved petals marking the board and gives the inside a finished look. A coloured paper lining also frames the roses. We include the lining on the proof.

Can you add a handle?

Yes. Ribbon or rope handles can be threaded through the lid so the box is easy to carry to the door.

Which colours work best for flower boxes?

Black, white, blush, sage and navy are popular because they let the flowers take the attention. A foil logo on a solid colour looks elegant without competing with the blooms. Bright box colours suit single-colour arrangements.

How should I deliver box arrangements?

Keep them upright and level. An outer box or carrier with a cradle insert stops movement in a van or with a courier.

Can the box have a drawer for chocolates?

Yes. A drawer box can combine a flower compartment with a separate gift drawer for chocolates, jewellery or a card.

Do you make long boxes for stems?

Yes. Long stem boxes hold roses or other stems laid flat, a classic way to present a dozen roses.

Can I keep a stock of boxes ready for busy weeks?

Yes, and it is wise to. Rigid flower boxes nest or stack well, and ordering a few weeks ahead of your busiest periods allows for 4 to 7 working days of production and 2 to 3 working days of free tracked delivery.

How are flower boxes priced?

By shape, size, wrap, finish and quantity. Send your details and we email a custom quote within one working day.
