Custom Window Boxes with Die-Cut Inserts
Custom window boxes with die-cut inserts pair a clear front window with a shaped card insert that holds the product exactly where the shopper can see it. Toy makers, cosmetic brands and gift set sellers use them when the product has to be visible, secure and neatly presented all at once.

How the Window and the Insert Work Together
A window on its own shows the product, but it does not control where the product sits. In a plain window box, a toy can slide to one corner, a lipstick can roll out of view and a gift set can end up jumbled by the time it reaches the shelf. The die-cut insert solves that. It is a printed card panel with cut-outs shaped to each item, fitted behind the window so every piece is held in a fixed, visible position.
That turns the box into a small display case. The insert also gives you a printed backdrop behind the product, which is valuable space: a scene behind a toy figure, a colour panel behind a palette, or a short description beside each item in a set. The window frames it all, and the shopper sees exactly what they are buying.
Because the insert holds the product firmly, it also protects it. Items do not rub against each other or against the film, and the box survives handling, stacking and courier journeys far better than one with loose contents. Single products that do not need holding still suit foldable window boxes without an insert.
Products That Suit This Style
Toys are the classic example: action figures, small vehicles, doll accessories, craft kits and building sets with a few hero pieces on show. Parents want to see the toy, and the shaped insert keeps every part in place so nothing goes missing in the shop.
Cosmetics and skincare gift sets are the other big group. A lipstick, a mascara and a small cream can sit side by side in individual cut-outs, each one visible through the window. Fragrance minis, nail polish sets and brush kits work the same way.

Designing the Die-Cut Insert
The insert starts with the product. We need the exact dimensions of every item, and ideally a sample, so that each cut-out grips firmly without forcing the product in. For irregular shapes such as toy figures, the cut-out may follow the outline closely, with small tabs or slits that hold limbs or accessories in place. For cylindrical items, a round hole with a supporting shelf below is often enough.
Depth is created by folding. A single-layer insert holds flat items, while a folded insert with a raised platform lifts products closer to the window so they appear larger and better lit. Multi-level inserts can show a hero product in front with accessories behind.
The printed face of the insert matters as much as its shape. Use it for a background scene, product names under each cut-out, or a short line about the range. Keep the colours behind the product calm enough that the item itself takes the eye. Inserts for gift sets are cut alongside our other die-cut inserts for sets.
Window Shapes and Film
The window can be a simple rectangle across the front, a shaped cut that echoes the product or brand, or a window that wraps around a corner so the product can be seen from two sides. Shaped windows are a strong design feature but leave less printed area, so balance them against the information you need on the front panel.
Clear PET film is glued behind the window to keep dust out and protect the product. It stays crisp and transparent and resists scratching. For very small or delicate items, a slightly thicker film adds rigidity to the front panel. The film is fixed the same way as on our other window film on folding board, glued inside the cut-out.
Board, Print and Finish for Window Boxes with Die-Cut Inserts
The outer box is usually folding boxboard printed in full colour, with a gloss or matte lamination to protect it on the shelf. For heavier toys or glass cosmetics, an E-flute corrugated outer adds strength while still taking high-quality print on the face.
Inserts are normally cut from a slightly lighter board than the outer so they fold easily, but heavy items may need a thicker insert to stop the cut-outs tearing. We print inserts on one side, or both if part of the back is visible through a corner window.
Finishes such as spot UV around the window edge, foil on the brand name and embossing on a logo help a box get noticed among competitors on the same shelf. A hang tab at the top lets toy boxes hang on pegs as well as stand. You can see spot UV and foil compared around a window edge in our finish guide.
Sizing and Packing Tips
Build the insert first and size the outer box around it. Allow a few millimetres between the front of the product and the window film so the film is not pressed outwards, which looks untidy. Check that the product can be inserted from the side or the back without bending the insert; some packers prefer the insert to slide out as a tray for loading.
If you sell variations of the same set, a shared outer box with interchangeable inserts saves money. One outer print run can serve several product combinations, with only the insert cut-outs changing.
Think about the shelf as well as the product. Toy aisles tend to favour tall boxes that hang or stand upright, while cosmetic counters favour wide, shallow boxes that sit flat in a drawer or on a glass shelf. Matching the box proportions to where it will be sold makes the window face the shopper at the right angle, so the product inside is seen properly rather than from above or below.
Finally, test the finished pack by shaking it gently. If anything moves inside, the insert needs a tighter cut or an extra tab, and it is far easier to adjust that at proof stage than after a full run has been printed. Our guide on how to measure each item in the set explains the clearance a cut-out needs.
Post a Full Set of Products So the Insert Is Cut to Them
A die-cut insert is only as good as the measurements behind it, and sets with a tall bottle, a small jar and a tube rarely measure well from a spreadsheet. Post us one full set, or send each item's height, width and depth with a photo of the set laid out in the order it should appear through the window. Tell us whether packers fit products into the insert before it goes into the box or slide the insert out of an open end, because that changes the dieline. Several product sets can share one outer box with interchangeable inserts, and single items suit a simpler foldable window box without an insert.
Send the product dimensions or a sample set, the items per box and your quantity, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, with minimums kept low for new ranges. The free proof shows the box and insert layout. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, boxes arrive flat by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, and inserts cut differently from the proof, or any damage, reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.

Window Boxes with Die-Cut Inserts Questions
What buyers ask before ordering window boxes with Die-Cut inserts.
Do I need to send a product sample?
A sample is the most reliable way to get a snug insert, especially for irregular shapes. If that is not possible, exact dimensions for every item will do.
Can the insert hold items of different sizes?
Yes, each cut-out is shaped for its own item. A gift set with a tall bottle and a small jar can sit side by side securely.
Will the product touch the window film?
We leave a small gap between the product and the film so the window stays flat and clear. Raised inserts bring the product close without pressing it.
Can the die-cut insert carry a background scene behind the products?
Yes. The visible face of the insert is printed, so it can carry a background scene, product names beside each cut-out or a short description, all seen through the window.
Can a window box with an insert hang on a peg without the set sliding down?
Yes. We add a hang tab at the top, and because each item sits in its own cut-out the set stays in position whether the box hangs or stands.
Is corrugated board needed for heavy toys?
For heavier toys or glass products, an E-flute corrugated outer adds strength. Light items are fine in folding boxboard.
Can one outer box serve several product sets?
Yes, a shared outer with interchangeable inserts is a cost-effective way to cover several variations of a range.
How do packers load the product?
Products can be fitted into the insert before it goes into the box, or the insert can slide out as a tray. We design the method around your packing line.
What minimum quantity can I start with?
Minimums are quoted per job and kept low, so new ranges can be trialled before a larger order.
What happens if inserts are cut too tight?
We cut to the dimensions approved on the proof, so please check them carefully. Misprints or damage on our side reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.
Can the window wrap around a corner?
Yes, corner windows let shoppers see the product from the front and side. They suit toys and taller products on deep shelves.
