from £0.25 a bandPriced per job · low minimums

Custom belly bands are printed strips of paper or card that wrap around the middle of a tray, box or bundle and carry the branding and product details. They let you keep one plain container and change the band for each product, flavour or range.

What a Belly Band Actually Does

A belly band is the simplest kind of sleeve. Instead of covering a whole box, it wraps around the centre, leaving the top and bottom on show. That band holds the brand name, the product name and anything else the shopper needs to know, while the container underneath stays plain, clear or kraft. Think of the paper band around a punnet of strawberries, a stack of cookies or a set of folded napkins.

The appeal is flexibility. One stock box, tray or container can carry many different products, simply by changing the printed band. A food producer with ten flavours does not need ten printed boxes; it needs one container and ten bands. That cuts stock levels, storage space and the cost of trying a new flavour.

Bands also act as a light seal. When a band wraps around a box lid and base, it shows whether the pack has been opened, which reassures shoppers buying food or gifts from a shelf. It is not a tamper-proof closure, but it does make a pack feel finished and cared for in a way that a loose lid does not.

Where Custom Belly Bands Work Best

Food is the biggest user. Bakers band clear clamshells of cookies and brownies; delis band trays of olives and antipasti; confectioners band boxes of fudge and chocolates. The band adds branding and a seal without hiding the food that makes people want to buy it.

Gift and lifestyle brands use bands too. A belly band can turn a plain kraft box of soap into a branded gift, wrap a bundle of notecards, hold a folded scarf in place or tie a set of candles together. Stationers use them on notebooks and paper packs, and printers use them to finish wedding invitation bundles.

Measuring for a Snug Fit

A belly band needs to be tight enough not to slide off, but not so tight that it buckles the container or tears when slipped on. Measure the container's full circumference at the point where the band will sit, which is usually the middle; our guide to measuring your product shows how to wrap a tape round a curved tray. Then choose the band height, which is often a third to a half of the container's depth, so enough of the product shows above and below.

Bands can be supplied as closed loops that slide on, or as flat strips that wrap around and fix with a self-adhesive tab, a sticker or a tuck. Slide-on loops are fastest to apply on a production line. Wrap-around strips suit irregular shapes and allow a little adjustment.

Paper, Card and Print Finishes

Lighter bands are made from uncoated or coated paper, which wraps easily around tight curves and small bundles. Heavier bands use thin card, the same stock as a printed paper sleeve, which holds its shape and feels more substantial on gift boxes. Kraft paper gives a natural, artisan look that suits bakeries and farm shops.

If the band will touch food directly, food-contact grade board is available on request. For chilled products such as cheese or deli trays, a coated or laminated band resists condensation better than an uncoated one.

Full colour printing handles photographs and illustrations; one or two spot colours suit simpler, bolder designs and can be very effective on kraft. Matte or gloss lamination protects the band and lifts the colours. Foil stamping, embossing and spot UV add a premium touch to gift packaging.

Die-cut shapes add personality. A band can have a curved edge, a window cut-out, a notch for a ribbon or a hang-tab for display. These details make a simple band feel considered without much extra cost.

Design: Small Space, Big Job

A belly band offers limited space, so prioritise. The front panel carries the brand and the product name in clear, readable type, exactly as it would on a printed cookie sleeve. The back panel takes ingredients, allergens, a barcode or a short description. The sides can carry a pattern or a colour that differs from product to product, making a range easy to read at a glance.

Design bands as a family. Keep the logo and layout fixed, change one colour or illustration per variant, and the whole range looks coherent on a shelf. That approach also makes adding a new product simple: you only need to change one element of the artwork.

Applying Bands Quickly in a Busy Kitchen or Studio

How a band goes on matters when you are packing hundreds of items a week. Slide-on loops are fastest: a member of staff can band a tray in a second or two once they have the knack. Wrap-around strips with a peel-off adhesive tab take slightly longer but forgive small differences in container size. Tuck-fastened bands avoid adhesive altogether and can be removed and reapplied, which is useful when customers want to check a product before buying.

Keep the bands near where they will be used, flat and dry, and in separate stacks by product so nobody bands a lemon cake tray with a chocolate band. Printing a small product code on the inside of each band makes checking easy at a glance.

If you hand-finish gift boxes, consider a band with a small notch for twine or ribbon. It holds the tie in place and keeps every box looking the same, even when several people are packing.

Wrap a Tape Measure Round the Pack First

A belly band order needs one measurement more than any other: the circumference of the filled container at the line where the band will sit. Wrap a soft tape measure around the pack with the product inside, since a filled clamshell or tray is often a few millimetres fatter than an empty one, and note whether the sides bulge. Then decide how the band fastens. A closed loop slides on fast and suits boxes with square corners; a wrap-around strip with an adhesive tab copes with irregular shapes and chilled trays; a tuck-fastened band avoids adhesive altogether.

Send the circumference, the band height you want, the fastening and the number of designs, and a custom quote arrives by email within one working day, with minimums quoted per job and simple bands on larger runs from £0.25 each. A free design proof shows each version flat. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. If you later outgrow bands on a plain box, the tray and sleeve box is the natural next step, because the sleeve carries the same artwork.

Belly Bands Questions

What buyers ask before ordering belly bands.

Are belly bands cheaper than printed boxes?

Usually, yes. You buy plain containers in bulk and print only the band, which costs much less than a fully printed box.

How tight should a belly band be?

Snug enough to stay put when the pack is lifted, but loose enough to slide on without tearing. We size it from your container's circumference.

Can I have different bands for each flavour?

Yes. We print several versions in one order, often with the same layout and a different colour or illustration for each flavour.

Can bands be used on chilled food?

They can. For chilled trays we recommend a coated or laminated band, which copes better with condensation.

How are bands fastened?

As slide-on closed loops, wrap-around strips with an adhesive tab, or tuck-fastened bands that lock with a slot. Closed loops are quickest to apply on square boxes; wrap-around strips suit odd shapes. We suggest one based on your container.

Can the band include a window?

Yes, we can die-cut a window or shaped opening to show part of the product beneath. On a cookie clamshell the window usually sits on the front panel below the logo. Keep at least 10 mm of paper around the cut so the band stays strong.

Which paper weight suits a band on a 240 mm soap bar?

A small, tight wrap like a soap bar band works best in paper rather than card, because paper bends round the short edges without cracking. Thin card suits wider bands on gift boxes and notebooks, where a more substantial feel is wanted. Tell us the container and we specify the weight.

Can bands carry a barcode and ingredients?

Yes. The back panel is a good place for ingredients, allergens and a barcode, leaving the front for branding.

Do belly bands work on irregular shapes?

Wrap-around strips adapt better to irregular shapes than closed loops. Send a photo of the product and we will advise.

Are bands supplied flat?

Yes. Wrap-around strips arrive flat, and closed loops arrive glued and flat, ready to open and slide on.

Can I order bands for a product I am still testing?

Yes. Because minimums are quoted per job, bands are an affordable way to test a new product before investing in printed boxes.
