Custom Tray and Sleeve Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom tray and sleeve boxes split the opening into two moments: the printed sleeve slides away, then the tray inside reveals the product. That small bit of theatre is why gift brands, cosmetic companies and chocolatiers choose this style when they want packaging to feel considered without being complicated.

How a Two-Part Box Changes the Opening

Most boxes open in one movement: a lid lifts, a flap folds back, and the product is there. A tray and sleeve box adds a pause. The customer slides the sleeve off, sees the tray and its contents, and often finds a second printed surface or a message on the inside of the tray. It feels deliberate, like opening a drawer, and it gives the brand two surfaces to work with.

The format is also practical. The tray holds and protects the product, while the sleeve carries the branding and the information. Because the two parts are separate, you can print several sleeves for different products and use the same tray for all of them, which is a simple way to cover a range without multiplying costs.

Sleeves can also be made as partial bands that cover only the middle of the tray, leaving the ends visible. That look is popular with chocolatiers and soap makers, where a coloured tray peeps out either side of a printed band. The same slide-out opening at a smaller scale is our matchbox-style slide boxes.

Card or Rigid: Choosing the Build

Folding card tray and sleeve boxes are light, economical and ship flat. The tray folds up with locking corners and the sleeve is a glued tube that slides over it. They suit soaps, chocolates, tea, stationery sets, jewellery and small gifts, and they can be produced in good quantities at a sensible unit cost.

Rigid tray and sleeve boxes are made from greyboard wrapped in paper. They are sturdier and heavier, feel more luxurious in the hand, and suit premium cosmetics, fragrance, watches, gift sets and keepsake packaging. Rigid trays can also have a ribbon pull so the tray slides out smoothly.

A third option combines the two: a rigid tray with a lighter card sleeve, which balances a premium feel with lower weight.

  • Folding card tray and sleeve: light, economical, ships flat
  • Rigid tray and sleeve: sturdy and luxurious
  • Rigid tray with card sleeve: premium feel, lower weight
  • Partial band sleeve: shows the tray at each end
  • Sleeve with window: shows the product without removing it

What Goes Well in Custom Tray and Sleeve Boxes

Chocolates and confectionery are a natural match, because the tray can carry a moulded or card insert with cavities for individual pieces. Cosmetic sets, such as a serum and a cream or a set of lipsticks, sit beautifully in a fitted insert. Soap makers use the partial band style to show the soap colour and texture.

Gift sets of almost any kind work well: socks and a card, a candle and matches, a small bottle and glasses, or a set of spices. Corporate gifts and event packs use the format to present branded items in an orderly way, and stationery brands use it for pen sets, notebooks and greeting cards.

Tea brands are another good fit: a tray holding a row of tins or pyramid bags under a printed sleeve makes a tasting set feel complete.

Inserts and Fitting the Product

The tray can be left plain, with tissue or crinkle paper, or fitted with an insert that holds each item. Card inserts with die-cut cavities are versatile and economical. Foam inserts suit fragile or heavy items, and moulded inserts work well for chocolates. Each item should sit snugly enough not to move when the box is tilted, but loosely enough to lift out easily.

Think about the order of the reveal. The item that should be seen first, such as the hero product, should sit centrally or towards the end that the sleeve uncovers first. A printed card or message on top of the insert adds a personal touch.

If you sell several combinations, a tray with a removable insert lets you swap layouts without changing the tray or sleeve. Our guide on how to measure the product for the tray explains the clearance a cavity needs.

Sleeve Design and Finishing

The sleeve is where the brand lives. Full colour printing, a bold logo, foil highlights, embossing and spot UV can all be used. Soft-touch lamination gives a velvety feel that suits cosmetics and luxury goods, while uncoated textured papers suit artisan products. A die-cut window in the sleeve can show the product or a coloured tray beneath.

Inside the tray, consider a contrasting colour or a printed pattern. It creates a second layer of interest when the sleeve is removed. A thumb notch or a ribbon tab on the tray helps the customer slide it out.

The fit between tray and sleeve matters. Too tight and the sleeve is hard to slide; too loose and the tray falls out. We set the tolerance carefully for the board and finish you choose.

Getting the Dimensions Right

Start with the product or insert size, then add a little for the tray walls. The sleeve is sized to the outer tray dimensions plus a small allowance so it slides smoothly. If you plan several products in the same tray, measure the largest and design the insert around it.

Depth is easy to underestimate. Allow for tissue, inserts and any cards inside the box. A tray that is a few millimetres too shallow can make the sleeve bulge or prevent it from closing over the contents.

Grain direction matters more than people expect on this style. Board bends more easily one way than the other, and a sleeve cut with the grain running the wrong way can bow outwards over time, so the fit loosens. We set the grain on every sleeve so it stays straight and keeps a gentle grip on the tray.

If you plan to post the boxes, check the outer size against your courier bands. A tray and sleeve box adds two layers of board to every side, and on small products that can push a parcel into a larger size category. You receive a free proof of tray and sleeve together so the fit can be checked.

Send the Product Size and Say if the Sleeve Must Hide the Tray

Tray and sleeve boxes are quoted from the product size and one design choice: whether the sleeve covers the whole tray or only a band around the middle. A full sleeve carries the most print and hides a plain tray; a partial band shows the tray colour or the product ends and suits soaps and chocolate bars. Measure the product at its widest and tallest points, say whether an insert with cavities is needed, and decide between a card build, which ships flat, and a rigid tray with a card sleeve for a heavier feel. A ribbon pull or thumb notch makes the tray easy to slide out. Brands with several products often keep one tray size and print a sleeve per product, and small gifts suit a matchbox-style slide box in the same build.

Send the product dimensions, insert needs, build and quantity, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, with low minimums for limited editions. The free proof covers the tray, sleeve and any insert. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, boxes arrive by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, and a wrong sleeve fit that is our fault, or any damage, reported within 10 days is reprinted or refunded.

Tray and Sleeve Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering tray and sleeve boxes.

Can one tray work with several sleeves?

Yes, a single tray can be paired with different printed sleeves for each product. It is a cost-effective way to cover a range.

Will the sleeve slide off too easily?

We set the fit to suit the board and finish. The sleeve should slide off smoothly without the tray falling out.

What is a partial band sleeve?

It covers only the middle of the tray, leaving the ends visible. It is popular for soaps and chocolates.

Can the tray have a ribbon pull?

Yes, a ribbon or a thumb notch helps the customer slide the tray out. It suits rigid boxes especially.

Should I choose card or rigid?

Card is lighter and more economical; rigid feels more luxurious. A rigid tray with a card sleeve balances both.

Can the inside of the tray be printed so there is a second reveal under the sleeve?

Yes. A printed tray interior or a contrasting colour appears as the sleeve slides off, and it suits a message, a pattern or a product name beside each cavity.

Can a sleeve window show the chocolate bar inside without removing the sleeve?

Yes. A die-cut window in the sleeve shows the product or the tray colour, and we keep a border of card around it so the sleeve still slides cleanly.

Can you make inserts for chocolates?

Yes, card or moulded inserts with individual cavities keep chocolates in place.

What minimum do you need?

Minimums are low and quoted per job, so limited editions and small brands are welcome.

How soon after the sleeve proof is approved will tray and sleeve boxes arrive?

Production takes 4 to 7 working days after proof approval, then free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses adds 2 to 3 working days. Card versions arrive flat; rigid trays arrive made up.

What if the sleeve is too loose and the tray falls out?

The fit is set on the proof to suit the board and finish, so check the dimensions there. If the fault is ours and reported within 10 days with a photo, we reprint or refund the affected boxes.
