Custom Unique Boxes for Brands That Want Something Different
Custom unique boxes are for the products that deserve more than a standard tuck end carton: odd shapes, unusual openings, hidden compartments and inserts that make the reveal part of the experience. Tell us the idea and we will work out how to make it in board.

When a Standard Box Is Not Enough
Most products are perfectly well served by a familiar box style, and we make plenty of those. But some brands need their packaging to do more. A limited edition, a product launch, a gift that has to be noticed on a crowded table, an influencer mailing, or a product so unusually shaped that a rectangle wastes half its space. In those cases the box itself becomes part of the story, and a clever shape or opening is remembered long after the contents are used up.
Unique does not have to mean extravagant. Some of the most effective designs are a small twist on a familiar style: a box that opens from the corner instead of the top, a sleeve that reveals a message as it slides off, an insert that lifts the product up as the lid opens. Those touches often cost little more than a standard box.
There is a commercial reason too. Shoppers and social media audiences scroll past familiar packaging without a second glance, but an unusual shape makes them pause. A product in a hexagon box on a shelf of rectangles draws the eye, and a mailer that opens in an unexpected way is far more likely to be filmed and shared. For a small brand without a large advertising budget, that extra attention can be the most cost-effective marketing it does all year.
Shapes and Structures We Make
Board can be folded into far more shapes than most people expect. Here are some of the structures that brands ask us about.
Not every shape suits every product. A pyramid looks wonderful but wastes space around a square item, while a hexagon holds round jars and candles snugly. Pillow boxes suit soft and flat products such as scarves, cards and small accessories. We will suggest the shapes that best fit your product before you fall in love with one that fights it. Six-sided products have their own page at hexagon boxes for six-sided products.
- Hexagon, octagon and pentagon boxes with fitted lids

- Pillow, house-shaped and briefcase-style boxes
- Boxes with a window shaped like the product or the logo
- Twist-open, petal-top and pop-up structures
- Book-style boxes with magnetic flaps and hidden compartments
- Drawer boxes with pull ribbons and stacked trays

Openings That Make People Smile
The way a box opens is the moment most people film or remember. A front panel that folds down like a drawbridge, a lid that lifts to reveal a tiered insert, a pull tab that slides a product up into view, or a double-door front that opens from the middle all turn unboxing into a small event. They work especially well for gift sets, subscription launches, product samples sent to the press and premium personal care ranges.
We plan these openings so they still make sense in daily use. A box that is wonderful the first time but impossible to close again annoys customers who keep their product in it. If the box will be reused, we design it to open and close cleanly many times. A lid that opens from the point is shown on our pyramid boxes that open from the top page.
Inserts That Do the Talking
Inside many unique boxes is an insert that holds each item in a particular way. Card inserts can be cut into steps, curves and angled cradles. Several products can be arranged on different levels so the customer discovers them in order. A message or instruction can be printed on the insert itself, revealed only when the product is removed. Foam and moulded pulp inserts can hold delicate or oddly shaped items securely.
If your product range changes often, we can design an insert system with interchangeable pieces so one outer box suits several bundles.
A good insert also protects. Products held in a shaped cradle cannot slide into the walls of an unusual box, which matters because angled or curved panels are less forgiving than a straight-sided carton. If the box will be posted, we design the insert to carry the product's weight away from the most delicate folds. Platforms, cradles and cut-outs are covered on our inserts cut to the product page.
Turning an Idea Into Custom Unique Boxes
Most projects start with a sketch, a photo of something you liked, or just a description of the feeling you want. Send whatever you have, along with the product dimensions and weight, and tell us how the box will be used: shop shelf, postal mailer, gift handed over in person. We work out a structure that can be cut and folded reliably at the quantity you need.
Unusual shapes do have practical limits. Very complex structures take longer to assemble by hand, and some shapes do not stack or post efficiently. We will tell you honestly if a design will be awkward to pack or expensive to post, and suggest an alternative that keeps the spirit of the idea. Prices depend heavily on the structure, so every unique box is quoted individually. If you want a familiar base to adapt, our guide to choosing a starting structure lists the common ones.
Materials, Print and Finishing
Folding boxboard is the go-to for most unique shapes because it folds crisply and prints beautifully. Rigid board wrapped in printed or textured paper suits premium boxes with lids and magnetic closures. Corrugated board works for larger shapes and anything that will be posted.
Print can run across every panel, including the inside, and many unique boxes use the inside for a message or a pattern. Matt and soft-touch laminates, foil, embossing, debossing and spot UV are all available. A striking structure often needs less decoration, so we sometimes suggest keeping the print simple and letting the shape do the work.
Board colour is part of the design too. Black board gives a dramatic look for evening launches and premium ranges, kraft feels handmade and natural, and coloured papers on rigid boxes can carry a brand colour without any printing at all. Ask for samples of materials if colour and texture are central to the idea. Foil, embossing and lamination are compared in our the three finishes compared guide.
Describe the Reveal Before the Shape
Unusual boxes start with a moment, not a dieline. Write down what should happen when the box is opened: a lid that lifts to show a product standing up, a drawer that slides to reveal a message, a box that unfolds flat into a display. That one sentence tells us more than a sketch of a shape, and the structure follows from it. Then give us the product dimensions, how the box travels, on a shelf, in the post or handed over, and the quantity, because a complex structure for twenty boxes is priced differently from one for two thousand. Ask for a plain structural sample if the fold is unusual, so you can test it before the print run. Artwork comes last, once the dieline is agreed, as vector files placed on every panel of the free proof. A custom quote or a set of questions comes by email within one working day, minimums are set per project, and boxes are made in 4–7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Structures we have already drawn are on our creative boxes we have already drawn page.

Unique Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering unique boxes.
Do I need a finished design to ask for unique boxes?
No. A sketch, a photo of something you liked or a short description is enough to start. We work out a structure that can be made reliably and send a quote.
Are unusual shapes much more expensive?
Some are, some are not. A small twist on a familiar style often costs little more than standard. Complex structures with many parts cost more, so each design is quoted individually.
Can a unique box still be posted?
Many can, but some shapes are awkward or costly to post. We will tell you if a design is likely to be a problem and suggest an alternative or an outer shipper.
Can I see a plain sample before full production?
For complex structures we can discuss a plain structural sample so you can test the fold and the fit. Ask when you request your quote.
Will the box be hard to assemble?
We design for assembly as well as looks. If a structure would slow down your packing, we will suggest ways to simplify it, such as pre-glued sections.
Can the inside of a unique box reveal a printed message?
Yes, printing inside is popular on unique boxes for messages, patterns or instructions revealed as the box opens. The inside is printed on the same sheet as the outside before cutting. We show it on the flat proof.
Can one box hold several products in a set order?
Yes. Tiered and stepped inserts let customers discover items one after another, which works well for launch kits and gift sets.
Can the box be reused?
If you want customers to keep it, we design the opening to close cleanly many times and suggest a sturdier board. A magnetic or tab closure holds up better than a tuck over repeated use. Tell us the box should last and we specify accordingly.
How long does a custom structure take?
Once you approve the free proof, production takes 4 to 7 working days, with free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days. Allow extra time beforehand if you want a structural sample.
What if the shape does not come out as expected?
Each box is made to the dieline you approve on the proof, and a structural sample is the surest check for an unusual fold. If any arrive misprinted or damaged, send photos within 10 days for a reprint or refund. Differences from the approved proof are put right.
