Custom Window Boxes with Lids
Some products sell themselves the moment people can see them, and a lidded box with a clear window lets them do exactly that while still being protected. Our custom window boxes with lids pair a printed base with a separate lid carrying a clear film panel, for gifts, treats and small products.

Seeing Before Buying
Customers like to see what they are getting. A box of macarons, a set of handmade soaps, a pair of socks or a hamper of treats is far more tempting through a window than behind solid card. The window answers questions about colour, quality and quantity without anyone needing to open the box, which keeps products clean and saves shop staff from repacking.
The lid adds something a tuck box cannot. Lifting a lid off a base feels like opening a gift, and a two-piece box looks more substantial on a shelf. Because the lid is separate, it can be removed for display at a market stall or in a shop window and then replaced when the product is sold.
The combination of window and lid suits products that are both pretty and fragile, where you want visibility without exposure.
Window boxes with lids also make gifting easier for the customer. Someone buying a present can see exactly what is inside, hand it over without wrapping and know it will look good when opened. Many shops find that a well-designed window box lifts sales of gift items simply because it removes the need to wrap. p3 The same reasoning applies to our raised lid boxes, where the lid sits proud of the base.
Window Shapes and Positions
The window is usually cut into the top of the lid, so the product is seen from above when the box lies on a counter or in a gift basket. For boxes that stand on a shelf, a window in the side of the lid, or wrapping from the top onto one side, shows the product from the front.
Shapes can be simple rectangles and circles, or die-cut to match your brand, such as a heart, a leaf or a logo outline. Leave enough solid card around the window for the lid to keep its strength and for your logo and product name.

Base, Lid and Film Construction
The base can be a simple folded tray, a tray with locking corners or a tray with an insert for individual items. The lid is a slightly larger tray that slips over it, deep enough to cover the base fully or shallower so a band of base colour shows underneath. A full-depth lid gives the most protection; a shallow lid shows off a contrasting base.
Most lidded window boxes are made from folding boxboard around 350 gsm. Rigid greyboard wrapped in printed paper is used for premium gift boxes that customers keep. The window film is a clear sheet glued behind the cut-out, crisp enough to give a clean view of the contents.
For food such as biscuits or chocolates, a liner or tray inside the base keeps products off the board. Food-contact grade board is available on request where items touch the card directly.
Think about how tightly the lid should fit. A snug lid stays put when the box is carried by the sides, while a slightly looser lid lifts off easily and makes a slow, satisfying reveal. A thumb cut in the base edge, or a ribbon tab, helps customers lift a close-fitting lid without tipping the contents.
Products That Shine in a Window Box
Bakeries use them for macarons, biscuits, brownies and small cakes. Confectioners use them for fudge, chocolates and sweets. Cosmetics and soap makers use them for bath bombs, soaps and gift sets. Fashion accessory sellers use them for socks, scarves, ties and handkerchiefs. Gift shops use them for hand-picked sets and hampers.
In each case the window shows colour, texture or variety, which is exactly what persuades a buyer. For products where the inside is plain or repetitive, a solid lid with a printed image may work better, so it is worth thinking about what customers will actually see.
Event planners use small window boxes with lids as favours, filled with sugared almonds, mini biscuits or a small candle, so guests can see the treat before they open it. Personalised stickers on the lid turn a standard printed box into a keepsake for a wedding or celebration.
Design Tips Around the Window
Plan the artwork with the window in mind. The window becomes the focal point, so frame it rather than compete with it. A logo above or below the window, a thin printed border around it and a product name nearby keep the lid tidy. Avoid placing important text close to the edge of the cut-out.
Think about what shows through the window too. If the product sits on a printed insert or tissue, its colour forms the background of the view. A contrasting insert makes the product pop.
The base sides and the inside of the lid can carry more information, such as ingredients, care instructions or a short story, leaving the lid itself clean and inviting.
Light and reflections matter in a shop. Glossy window film can catch overhead lighting, so on a high shelf a side window may show the product more clearly than a top window. If you know where the boxes will sit, tell us, and we will suggest the best window position for that view.
Sizing Your Lidded Window Box
Measure the product or arrangement as you want it to appear, including any insert or tissue. Note the length, width and height, then allow a little clearance. Remember that the lid is slightly larger than the base, so the external size depends on the lid's dimensions.
If you sell several sizes, keeping the same window proportions and design across them makes your range look consistent. We can show you several sizes on a single proof so you can compare them.
Think about stacking and shipping too. Lidded boxes stack well when the lid is flat and strong, so a box designed for a shelf display can often go straight into an outer carton for delivery to stockists. We can suggest an outer carton size if you plan to ship in bulk.
Decide Whether the Lid Comes Off for Display
A lidded window box is used two ways, and the choice changes the build: a lid that stays on and shows the product through the window, or a lid that is lifted off at a market stall and put back at the sale. For the second, ask for a shallower lid that lifts easily and a base that looks finished on its own. Then measure the product with its liner or insert, add a few millimetres, and say if the window goes in the lid top or wraps a side.
Keep 15 mm of card around the window, put the product name on the lid beside it and the details on the base sides. Tell us the quantity per size if you run a range. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day with the minimum set per job.
The free proof shows base, lid and window together. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the flat boxes reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery; order spare lids, since lids scuff first. Makers whose product sells entirely on looks sometimes move to our gift boxes with a fully clear lid instead.

Window Boxes with Lids Questions
What buyers ask before ordering window boxes with lids.
Where is the window placed on a lidded box?
Usually in the top of the lid, so the product is seen from above. Side and wraparound windows suit boxes displayed standing up.
Can the window in a lidded box be heart-shaped or follow a logo?
Yes. Hearts, circles, leaves and simple logo outlines can all be cut into the lid, as long as 15 mm of card remains around the shape so the lid stays stiff and the film has room to stick. Very fine points are rounded off on the proof.
Should the lid cover the base fully?
A full-depth lid gives the most protection. A shallower lid lets a band of the base show, which works well with a contrasting base colour.
Can I use window boxes for biscuits?
Yes. A liner or tray inside the base keeps food off the board, and food-contact grade board is available on request.
Are rigid window boxes available?
Yes, rigid greyboard wrapped in printed paper gives a premium lidded box that customers often keep. The window is cut through the wrap and the board together.
What should I print around the window?
Frame the window with your logo and product name, and keep detailed information on the base sides or inside the lid. The product does the rest.
Can you add an insert to hold several items?
Yes, a die-cut insert holds individual items in place so they look neat through the window. Send the item sizes and we lay out the cells.
Can I order three sizes of window box in the same design?
Yes. Keeping the window proportions, the logo position and the colours the same across sizes makes a range look like one family on a shelf, and each size gets its own proof. Running them in one order keeps the print colour identical.
Is the window film strong?
The film is a crisp clear sheet glued behind the cut-out, firm enough for normal handling and display. It peels away from the card with a thumbnail.
How soon can lidded window boxes be ready for a product launch?
Four to seven working days to make after you approve the free proof, then 2 to 3 working days for free tracked UK mainland delivery. Add a day or two for the quote and proof at the start, so about two weeks from first email to delivery.
