Custom paperboard boxes with lids are light two-piece boxes, a base and a separate lid, that give products the look of a gift box at a fraction of the weight and cost of rigid packaging. The Appeal of a Simple Base and Lid

There is something satisfying about lifting a lid off a box. It feels more deliberate than pulling a tuck flap, and it reveals the whole product at once rather than sliding it out of an end. That is why base-and-lid boxes are associated with gifts, clothing and keepsakes. Paperboard versions bring that experience to products that do not justify the weight and price of a rigid box.

Paperboard, also called folding boxboard, is a single thick sheet of card rather than layers of board wrapped in paper. It folds into shape along creased lines and can lock together with tabs or a little glue. The result is a light, crisp box that prints beautifully, stores flat and costs far less to ship, both to you and on to your customers.

For many products, especially lighter items like accessories, stationery, cosmetics and small gifts, it gives all the presentation that is needed without the bulk.

How Paperboard Boxes With Lids Are Constructed

The base and lid are usually made as two separate trays. Each folds up from a flat blank, with corner flaps that lock in or are glued for extra strength. The lid is a few millimetres larger than the base so it slides on easily without being loose. Lids can be full depth, covering the base entirely, or shallow, leaving part of the base visible as a contrasting band.

Some styles come pre-glued at the corners and pop up from flat in one movement, which saves packing time. Others fold and lock without glue, which is economical and lets you store more boxes in less space. For heavier items, a double-wall construction folds the board back on itself to create thicker, stronger sides.

If you want the box to be easier to open, a thumb notch cut into the base sides gives fingers somewhere to grip the lid. p2 The doubled-wall version is covered on our double-wall lid boxes page.

  • Shallow lids that show a band of the base
  • Pre-glued pop-up or glue-free folding styles

Printing Options From Plain to Patterned

Paperboard takes print very well, so the design possibilities are wide. A single brand colour with a white or foil logo looks clean and premium. A repeat pattern across the lid creates a gift-wrap effect, so the box needs no wrapping paper. Photographs, illustrations and product information can all be printed in full colour.

Remember that the lid and base are seen separately. A plain base with a printed lid is a common, cost-effective approach. Printing the inside of the base, or the underside of the lid, adds a reveal when the box is opened. A contrasting colour on the base, visible under a shallow lid, can look striking.

Finishes add character. Matt or soft-touch lamination give a smooth, modern feel; gloss brightens colours; spot UV picks out details; and foil blocking adds shine to a logo or name. p2 The finishes are compared in the guide to print and finish options.

Choosing Dimensions and Board Thickness

Measure your product including any tissue, insert or protective wrap, then add a few millimetres in each direction. For the lid depth, decide between full coverage and a visible base band. As a guide, shallow lids of 20 to 30 mm suit most boxes, while full-depth lids suit tall or narrow products.

Board thickness depends on weight. Lighter boards suit scarves, jewellery and cards, while thicker or double-wall boards suit candles, cosmetics in glass and small homeware. If a product is heavy for its size, consider a card insert to hold it in place and stop it moving around.

Clearance between lid and base deserves a moment of thought. Too tight and the lid sticks, so customers tug and the box tears; too loose and the lid slides off when the box is tilted. We build in a small allowance suited to the board thickness, and if you plan to wrap the base in tissue that folds over the top edge, tell us so the lid still closes cleanly over it.

Products That Suit a Paperboard Lid Box

Clothing and accessories are a natural fit: T-shirts, scarves, ties, socks and underwear sit flat in a shallow box, presented neatly. Jewellery, watches and hair accessories suit small square boxes with an insert. Stationery brands use them for notebook sets, card packs and pens. Cosmetics brands use them for sets of products, often with a card insert holding each item.

Bakeries and chocolatiers use them for biscuits and treats, with food-contact grade board available on request. Gift shops and makers use them for candles, soaps and small homeware, and corporate teams use them for branded merchandise sent to clients or new staff. Photographers and artists use them for prints and photo sets.

Florists and plant shops also use deeper versions for small posies, dried flowers and seed gift sets.

Getting the Most From Your Order

If you sell several products, try to cover them with two or three box sizes rather than one size per product. This keeps your order simple and costs down. A shared design across sizes, with only the size changing, also makes your range look consistent.

Plan how boxes will be closed for shipping. A paper band, a printed sticker or a ribbon keeps the lid on in transit and adds a finishing touch. For postal delivery, the box usually goes inside a mailer or outer carton, so consider whether the outer packaging should be printed too.

Order a few extra lids as spares. Lids are the part most likely to be scuffed in a busy packing area, and a spare lid saves sacrificing a whole box. Keep flat stock in its cartons until needed so edges stay crisp. p2 Boxes posted on their own are better as our printed mailer boxes, which take a label directly.

Pick the Lid Depth From How the Box Is Opened

The lid is the whole character of this box, so decide it first. A full-depth lid hides the base and reads as one block on a shelf; a 20 to 30 mm shallow lid leaves a band of base showing for a second colour and lifts off easily, which suits a gift opened in front of someone. Then measure the product with its tissue or insert, add a few millimetres each way, and send the inside size, since the lid is cut to slide over the base we build from it.

Order a few spare lids, because lids are what get scuffed on a packing bench, and tell us if the box travels inside a mailer. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 a box, with the minimum set per job.

The free proof shows base and lid with every finish. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the flat boxes reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery; some styles pop up pre-glued, others fold and lock without glue. Brands with a small accessory line usually add our mini boxes with lids for small items in the same print.

Paperboard Boxes with Lids Questions

What buyers ask before ordering paperboard boxes with lids.

What is the difference between paperboard and rigid boxes?

Paperboard is a single thick card that folds into shape, while rigid boxes use thick board wrapped in paper. Paperboard is lighter, cheaper and ships flat.

Do paperboard boxes with lids come flat or made up?

They arrive flat in bundles. Pre-glued styles pop up from flat in one movement, while fold-and-lock styles are folded by hand without glue, which takes under a minute each once your team has seen one.

Can I print only the lid?

Yes, a printed lid with a plain base is a common way to keep costs down while still looking branded. The base can be a plain colour board rather than printed.

How deep should the lid be?

Shallow lids of 20 to 30 mm suit most boxes. Full-depth lids suit tall or narrow products and cover the whole base.

Can paperboard boxes hold heavier items?

Yes, with a thicker board or double-wall sides. A card insert also helps hold heavier items in place.

Can I add a thumb notch?

Yes, a notch in the base sides makes it easier to lift the lid off. It is cut into the dieline so there is no extra step.

Can the inside of the base or the underside of the lid be printed?

Yes. A colour or pattern inside the base, or under the lid, shows the moment the box opens and costs little extra because it prints on the same sheet. A contrasting base colour under a shallow lid works in the same way from the outside.

How do I keep the lid on during shipping?

A paper band, a sticker or a ribbon keeps the lid secure, and the box usually travels inside a mailer or outer carton. A snug mailer stops the lid lifting.

What do paperboard boxes with lids cost?

Prices start from £0.25 per box depending on size, board, print and quantity. Send us your details for a custom quote.

How long does a run of paperboard lid boxes take?

Four to seven working days to make after you approve the free proof, then 2 to 3 working days for free tracked UK mainland delivery. Add a day or two at the start for the quote and any proof changes.

Can I use one design across several sizes?

Yes, a shared design across sizes keeps your range consistent. We adapt the artwork to each size on the proof.
