Custom Snap Lock Bottom Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom snap lock bottom boxes have a base made of four interlocking flaps that fold together into a firm floor, so heavier products sit securely without tape or glue. They suit jars, bottles, candles and boxed goods that would push through a simple tuck flap.

How a Snap Lock Base Works

The bottom of a snap lock box has four flaps cut with matching tabs and slots. To assemble it, you fold the two side flaps in, then the front and back flaps, pressing them together until the tabs lock. The result is a flat, overlapping base that spreads the weight of the product across all four flaps, rather than relying on one tuck flap held by friction.

Because it is sometimes called a 1-2-3 bottom, after the sequence in which the flaps fold, you may see that name on packaging specifications. The top usually closes with a standard tuck flap, so customers open the box from above as they would any carton.

Once you have folded a few, the process becomes quick. Many small businesses set up a batch of boxes before a packing session, folding the bases while the products are being labelled, so the actual packing is just a matter of dropping each item in and closing the top. A short demonstration video for new staff saves a lot of confusion on the first day.

Snap Lock Bottom Boxes Compared With Other Bases

A tuck end base is the simplest and quickest to fold, but it can open under the weight of a heavy product, particularly if the box is lifted from the top. An auto lock bottom, sometimes called a crash lock, is pre-glued so the base springs into place as the box is opened, which is the fastest option on a busy packing line but costs a little more to produce because of the gluing step.

The snap lock sits between the two. It holds weight much better than a tuck end and costs less than an auto lock, because there is no glue on the base. The trade-off is that it takes a few seconds longer to fold by hand. For small to medium runs packed by hand, that is often the best balance.

If you are moving from a tuck end box to a snap lock box for the same product, the outside size usually stays almost the same, so your shelf layouts and shipping cartons still work. Only the base dieline changes, which makes the switch straightforward for an existing range.

  • Tuck end base: fastest to fold, suits light products
  • Snap lock base: holds heavier products without glue
  • Auto lock base: pre-glued, fastest for high volume packing
  • Snap lock top options: tuck flap, dust flaps or a hang tab

Products That Need a Stronger Floor

Snap lock bottom boxes are chosen when a product is heavy for its size or awkward to support. Glass jars of honey, jam and skincare, candles in glass or tins, bottles of oil or spirits, boxed electronics accessories, hardware such as hinges and fixings, pet treats, coffee bags and bath products all benefit. If a product could push a tuck flap open when lifted, a snap lock is a sensible upgrade.

Retailers also prefer them for products that stand on a shelf, because the flat, locked base sits level and does not bulge. That keeps shelf rows neat and helps the box look premium.

Gift sets are another good fit. A box holding two or three jars, or a candle with a matching room spray, is heavier than any single item, and a snap lock base keeps the set secure when a customer carries it to the till. Adding a simple card divider keeps the products from knocking together.

Board Choices and Strength

Most snap lock boxes are made from folding board between 350 and 450 gsm, heavier than many tuck end cartons because the products are heavier. For very heavy items, such as large candles or glass bottles, E-flute corrugated board gives extra strength while still printing well. Kraft board offers a natural brown finish, and white board gives the brightest print.

The weight of the product and how the box will be handled decide the board. Tell us the product weight and whether the box will be lifted by the top or carried in a bag, and we will recommend a grade.

Humidity can affect board strength too. Boxes stored in a damp outbuilding or a cold stock room can lose some of their stiffness, so if your storage is not heated, consider stepping up a grade or using corrugated board for your heaviest products. Storing flat boxes off the floor, in their original cartons, helps them keep their shape until they are needed.

Sizing Your Box

Measure the product at its widest points, including lids and handles, and add 1 to 2 mm on each dimension for clearance. For jars and bottles, measure the diameter and height, and consider whether an insert or a divider is needed to keep the product centred. A product that moves in a box puts more stress on the base when it is lifted.

Snap lock bases need a minimum footprint to fold correctly, so very narrow boxes sometimes work better with a different base. If your box is tall and slim, we will check the dieline and suggest the best construction.

When you send us a product sample, include any lid, pump or handle exactly as it will be sold. A box sized to a jar without its lid will not close, and it is a surprisingly common mistake when measurements are taken on a busy day.

Print, Finish and Shelf Appeal

Full colour print covers every panel, and spot colours match brand colours precisely. Matt and soft-touch laminations give a premium feel, gloss makes colours bright and wipeable, and foil or embossing adds a highlight to logos. A window lets customers see jars and candles, which helps on the shelf.

The base of a snap lock box is visible when the box is lifted, so some brands print a short message or a pattern on the base flaps. It is a small detail that customers notice when they turn the box over.

Inside print is another option worth considering for gift products. A coloured interior or a short message on the inside of the top flap makes opening the box feel more special.

Snap Lock Bottom Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering snap lock bottom boxes.

What is the difference between snap lock and auto lock?

A snap lock base is folded by hand and needs no glue. An auto lock base is pre-glued so it springs into place, which is faster to pack but costs more to produce.

How heavy a product can a snap lock box hold?

Much more than a tuck end box. The exact limit depends on the board, so tell us the product weight and we will recommend a grade.

Is it slow to fold?

It takes a few seconds longer than a tuck end. Most people pick up the folding sequence quickly.

Can I add a window?

Yes. A window lets customers see jars or candles. We place it so it does not weaken the base or corners.

Does the box need tape?

No. The base locks without tape or glue, and the top closes with a tuck flap.

Can I print on the base flaps?

Yes. Some brands add a short message or pattern that shows when the box is lifted.

Is corrugated board available?

E-flute corrugated board is available for very heavy products and still prints well.

What is the starting price?

Snap lock boxes start from £0.25 each, depending on size, board, finish and quantity. Your custom quote gives the exact figure.

Can very narrow boxes use a snap lock base?

Very narrow boxes may not fold well with a snap lock base. We check the dieline and suggest an alternative if needed.

What if the base does not lock properly?

Report any manufacturing fault, misprint or damage within 10 days of delivery and we will reprint or refund.
