Custom Tuck End Auto Bottom Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom tuck end auto bottom boxes combine a base that locks itself as the carton is opened with a simple tuck flap at the top for filling and closing. Packers get speed, products get a floor that will not give way, and your printed brand still wraps all four sides.

How the Auto Bottom Works

An auto bottom, sometimes called a crash lock base, is glued at the factory while the carton is still flat. When you squeeze the flat carton open, the pre-glued base flaps swing into place and interlock without any folding by hand. The result is a strong, square floor in about the time it takes to pick the box up.

At the top, the carton closes with a standard tuck end: a flap with a curved tongue that slides inside the front panel and is held by small friction locks. That gives the customer an easy way in and lets you inspect or refill the box before it leaves the warehouse.

The two ends do different jobs, and that is the point of the style. The base carries the weight of the product; the top is designed for opening. A carton with tuck flaps at both ends looks similar on a shelf, but the bottom relies on a tongue and friction, which can give way under a heavy jar or bottle.

When Tuck End Auto Bottom Boxes Make Sense

This style earns its keep in two situations, and both are where a plain reverse tuck end box starts to struggle. The first is weight. Glass jars, bottles of oil, candles in glass, supplements in tubs and boxed electricals all push down on the base when the carton is lifted. A locked base keeps them in.

The second is volume. If your team packs hundreds or thousands of units in a run, the time saved by not folding a bottom on every carton adds up quickly. Contract packers and small fulfilment teams often switch to auto bottoms for exactly this reason, even for lighter products.

Choosing the Right Board Thickness

Most tuck end auto bottom boxes are made from folding boxboard. Lighter products sit comfortably in a standard weight, while heavier glass items benefit from a thicker grade that keeps the side panels straight and the base locked under load; the board and card types guide compares the grades. For anything really heavy, or cartons that will be shipped without an outer box, an E-flute corrugated version adds crush strength and still prints well.

White board gives the cleanest result for full-colour artwork. Kraft board suits natural and handmade products and costs a little less to print because the brown base does part of the visual work. If you are unsure, tell us the product weight and how it will travel, and we will recommend a board in your quote.

Measuring the Carton

Measure the product at its widest, deepest and tallest points, including any caps, pumps or handles. We work in internal dimensions, so the numbers you send should describe the space the product needs. Add a few millimetres on width and depth so the product slides in without scuffing the print, and a little more on height if a leaflet or insert sits on top.

Dimensions are written length by width by height, with the height running from the base to the tuck lid. Getting the order right matters because it decides which panel the lid opens on. If you want the front of your design to face customers on a shelf, tell us which face that is and we will set the dieline accordingly.

If your product has a fragile neck or pump, mention it. We can raise the base slightly with a platform insert so the top of the product sits just below the tuck flap, which stops the lid pressing down on delicate parts when cartons are stacked.

Print and Finish That Survives Handling

Retail cartons get picked up, turned over and put back many times, so the finish needs to cope. A matt or gloss laminate protects the ink from scuffs and keeps colours bright, as the print and finish options compared page shows. Soft-touch laminate feels premium but marks a little more easily, so we suggest it for products sold in boutiques rather than busy supermarket shelves.

All four side panels plus the lid and base can carry print. Use the back panel for ingredients, usage or barcode, and keep the lid for a simple logo so it reads well when the box is viewed from above in a display tray. Foil, emboss and spot gloss can be added to any panel, and we show their exact position on the proof.

If you sell several variants in the same carton size, a common base design with a changed colour band or name is cost-effective, because the dieline and the bulk of the setup stay the same.

Inserts and Add-Ons

A simple card insert can hold a bottle neck in place, separate two items, or lift a small product so it sits higher in the box. For glass, a partition insert stops items touching. A hang tab can be added to the top for peg displays, and a window can be cut into the front panel with a clear film behind it if you want customers to see the product.

We can also print a short instruction or welcome message on the inside of the carton. It is a small touch that customers notice when they open the lid.

Tamper evidence is worth considering for food, supplements and cosmetics. A small printed seal across the tuck flap shows the customer the box has not been opened since it was packed, and it doubles as an extra branding spot. Some brands prefer a perforated tear strip in the lid instead, which gives a satisfying first opening and makes it obvious if someone has been inside.

If your cartons will travel in an outer shipper, ask us about matching shipper sizes so a set number of retail boxes fits snugly with no void fill. Getting the retail carton and the case to work together saves packing material and stops the printed boxes scuffing against each other on the way to a stockist.

Weigh the Filled Product, Because the Base Is Sized to Carry It

An auto bottom is chosen for what it carries, so the filled weight is the figure that matters. Put the jar, bottle or tub on the scales full and with its lid on, and send that number with the dimensions at the widest and tallest points; a light tub is fine in standard folding boxboard, a heavy glass bottle wants a thicker grade or E-flute. Say which panel is the front so the tuck lid opens the right way, and if the carton needs a hang tab, a window or an insert.

Email the product dimensions, the weight, the board preference and the quantity, and a custom quote comes back within one working day, from £0.25 per unit depending on size and finish, with minimums set per job rather than fixed high. Every order includes a free design proof with the flat dieline so panel positions and the lid direction can be checked. Cartons are produced in 4 to 7 working days after approval and ship flat on free tracked delivery, reaching UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. Brands with a foil accent in mind often add tuck end foil boxes in the same run.

Tuck End Auto Bottom Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering tuck end auto bottom boxes.

Is an auto bottom stronger than a tuck bottom?

Yes, for weight on the base it is noticeably stronger. The interlocking flaps are glued and form a solid floor, whereas a tuck bottom relies on a tongue held by friction. For heavy jars and bottles the auto bottom is the safer choice.

Do auto bottom boxes cost more?

They cost a little more than a plain straight tuck carton because the base is glued at the factory. Many customers find the packing time saved covers the difference, especially on larger runs. We show both options on a custom quote if you want to compare.

Are the cartons delivered flat?

Yes, they arrive flat and pre-glued. You squeeze the sides and the base locks into place, then fill the box and close the tuck lid. Flat delivery also saves space in your stock room.

Can the lid open on the front or the back?

Either. A reverse tuck has the lid tucking in from the back so the front panel stays clean, while a straight tuck has both flaps on the same side. Tell us which face is the front of your design and we will set the lid accordingly.

Will a heavy glass bottle fall through the base?

Not when the board grade matches the weight. Send us the filled weight of your product and we will specify a board thick enough for the base to hold, moving to E-flute corrugated for the heaviest items.

Can I add a window to an auto bottom carton?

Yes, a die-cut window with a clear film can be added to the front or side panels. Keep the window away from the base flaps so the lock is not weakened.

Can I put a barcode on these boxes?

Yes, place the barcode on the back or a side panel and make sure it prints in dark ink on a light background so scanners read it. We check the barcode position and quiet zone on your proof.

What if my product needs to be packed by machine?

Auto bottom cartons are mostly used for hand packing. If you plan to use an automatic cartoner, let us know the machine specification and we will advise whether a different carton style suits it better.

Can different products share one dieline?

Yes, if they are close in size. Using one dieline for several variants keeps setup costs down, and only the artwork changes between versions.

How soon can I have tuck end auto bottom boxes?

After you approve the free proof, production takes 4–7 working days. Delivery is then free and tracked to UK mainland addresses in 2–3 working days.

Can the inside of an auto bottom carton be printed?

Yes, inside printing works well for instructions, a thank-you line or a pattern that shows when the tuck lid opens. It adds a second print pass, which we include in the price, and the glued base flaps stay unprinted.
