Custom Double-Wall Lid Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom double-wall lid boxes fold their side walls back on themselves and lock into the base, so the box gains thick, rigid sides without a drop of glue. Pair the base with a matching lid and you get a sturdy two-piece retail pack that ships flat and assembles in seconds.

How a Double-Locked Wall Works

Each side of the box is cut twice as tall as the finished wall. When you fold it, the outer half stands up, the inner half folds down inside it, and small tabs at the bottom lock into slots in the base. The result is a wall made from two layers of board with a clean folded edge along the top rim, rather than a raw cut edge.

Because the corners are held by those locking tabs instead of adhesive, the box can be shipped to you completely flat and set up on the packing bench. There is no drying time, no glue line to fail in a cold warehouse and no need for a gluing machine on our side, which keeps the unit cost sensible for a box that looks and feels heavier than a standard tray.

The folded inner wall also gives you a printable surface on the inside of the box. Many brands print a solid colour there so the open box looks finished, even when the lid is off on a display table. p2 The locking tabs are the same idea as on our foot-lock trays without glue.

Why Choose Double-Wall Lid Boxes for Retail

The doubled sides resist crushing far better than a single layer of the same board. That matters for products that get stacked in a stockroom, carried home in a bag or posted inside an outer carton. A lid sitting on a firm rim also stays square, so the box keeps its shape after being opened and closed many times.

Shoppers notice the difference. A thick, folded rim feels deliberate and solid in the hand, close to the feel of a rigid box at a lower price. For products in the middle of the market, such as kitchen gadgets, gift sets, small leather goods or stationery bundles, it is often the sweet spot between a simple folding carton and a fully wrapped rigid box.

  • Thick, folded top rim with no raw edges
  • Corners locked by tabs, so no glue is needed
  • Ships flat and stores in a fraction of the space
  • Printable inner walls for a finished look when open

Board Choices and How They Change the Box

For smaller products we usually make double-wall lid boxes from folding boxboard, either white or kraft. It folds crisply, takes full colour print well and is plenty strong once the walls are doubled. For heavier contents, E-flute corrugated board adds cushioning and stiffness while staying thin enough to fold neatly at the rim.

If you plan to ship the box on its own, without an outer carton, tell us the weight of the contents. We will suggest whether corrugated board is needed and whether the lid should be a full-depth cap that covers the whole base or a shallower lid that shows a band of the base underneath.

Lid Depth, Fit and Sizing

Start with the internal size: length, width and height of the product, plus any insert or tissue that goes in with it. We build the base around those measurements and size the lid a fraction larger so it slides on smoothly without being loose. Remember that the doubled wall takes up room on the inside, so always give us the space you need inside the box, not the outside dimensions you would like.

A full-depth lid hides the base completely and looks like a single block on the shelf. A half-depth lid leaves a visible strip of the base, which is a good place for a contrasting colour or a product name. A shallow lid, only a few centimetres deep, is the easiest for customers to lift off and suits gift packs that are opened in front of someone.

If the box needs to hold several small items, add a card insert or a simple divider. We can cut it from the same board and print it to match. p2 The guide to measuring a product explains inside versus outside figures.

Print and Finish Ideas

The lid carries most of the branding, so put your logo and product name there and keep the base simpler. Matt coating gives a soft, quiet look that suits homeware and stationery. Gloss brings out photographs and bright colour. Spot gloss on a matt lid, foil on a logo or an embossed brand mark adds a tactile detail that customers notice when they pick the box up.

Printing the inner walls in a solid brand colour is one of the cheapest upgrades on this style. It turns the open base into a neat display tray, which helps if the product sits in the box on a shop counter. For kraft board, a single white or black ink keeps the natural surface visible and looks honest and practical. p1 The finishes are compared on the board and finish page.

Setting Up the Boxes on a Packing Bench

The first few boxes take a moment while your team learns the fold order: base panel flat, outer walls up, inner walls down, then press the locking tabs home. After a dozen or so, most people can build one in well under a minute without looking. We send a simple folding guide with your first order and can print small fold marks on the inside of the dieline if that helps new staff.

Because there is no glue, a box that has been folded wrongly can simply be opened out and folded again. That saves waste when you are training someone new, and it means unused stock can be kept flat at the end of a season rather than taking up shelves as built boxes.

For large runs, build a stack of bases and a stack of lids before you start packing products. Working in batches keeps the bench tidy and stops half-folded boxes getting crushed under finished orders. p2 Teams that pack hundreds a day sometimes prefer the glued corners of our six-corner trays that pop up.

Give Us the Inside Size and Let the Walls Add the Rest

The one measurement that catches people out on this style is the wall. Because each side folds back on itself, the doubled board takes 3 to 4 mm from every inside face, so a box ordered by its outside size ends up too small. Measure the product, add the insert or tissue, and send that as the inside size; we build the base round it and size the lid to slide over.

Choose the lid depth from how the box is opened: shallow for a gift unwrapped in front of someone, full depth for a shelf. Say whether the inner walls should carry a solid colour, the cheapest upgrade on this box. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 for simple sizes.

The free proof shows the flat dieline with the folds and the locking tabs; ask for a plain folded sample too if the style is new to your team. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the flat bases and lids reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Brands that need a divided interior often add boxes with fitted inserts for the premium end.

Double-Wall Lid Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering Double-Wall lid boxes.

Do double-wall lid boxes need glue to assemble?

No. The walls fold back on themselves and tabs lock into the base, so the box holds together without glue. Your team can set them up by hand on the packing bench.

Is a double-wall box as strong as a rigid box?

It is not quite as heavy as a wrapped rigid box, but the doubled walls make it far stiffer than a standard folding carton. For many mid-range products it gives a similar feel at a lower price.

Should I give you inside or outside measurements?

Inside measurements. The folded wall takes up a few millimetres on each side, so we work from the space your product needs and build the box around it.

Can a double-wall box have a printed lid over a plain base?

Yes, and it is a common choice: a full-colour lid over a plain kraft or single-colour base, often with a half-depth lid that leaves a band of the base showing. Printing only the lid keeps the cost down while the box still reads as branded on a shelf.

Can these boxes be posted without an outer carton?

For light products, yes, especially in corrugated board. Tell us the weight and we will suggest the right board and whether a sticker or band should hold the lid closed in transit.

Do double-wall lid boxes ship flat?

Yes. Both base and lid arrive flat in bundles, and the locking tabs mean no glue is needed on your bench. A base takes under a minute to fold once your team has seen the order of folds, and we send a one-page guide with the first order.

Is it worth printing the inside walls?

Usually, yes. Because the inner wall is part of the same sheet, a solid colour inside costs little extra and makes the open box look finished on a counter or in a photo.

Can I add an insert to hold several items?

Yes. We cut card inserts or dividers to match the box and can print them in the same design. Send us the item sizes and we will lay out the cut-outs.

What lid depth do you recommend for gift sets?

A shallow or half-depth lid is easiest to lift and creates a nice reveal. Full-depth lids look smarter on a shelf. Your free proof will show the difference before you commit.

Can I mix lid designs in one order?

Yes. Many brands keep one base design and print two or three lid versions for different products or colours. We quote the mix as one job and show each lid on the free proof.

How much does a double-wall lid box cost?

Simple sizes in folding board start from £0.25 per box; corrugated board, larger sizes and foil or spot gloss add to that. The custom quote by email within one working day prices base and lid separately so you can see where the cost sits.
