Custom Expandable Hexagon Boxes
Custom expandable hexagon boxes start as a neat six-sided pack and open outwards, petal by petal or panel by panel, to show what sits inside. They turn an ordinary handover into a small moment, which is exactly why gift brands, launch teams and event planners keep asking for them.

Packaging That Opens Like a Flower
Most boxes have one job when they are opened: get out of the way. An expandable hexagon box does the opposite. When the recipient pulls the lid or lifts a tab, the six side walls fold down and outwards in turn, so the product ends up sitting on a printed platform surrounded by panels of artwork. It is a box that people film, photograph and keep, and that is worth a lot to a brand that relies on social sharing.
The design works because of how the board is scored. Each panel is attached to the base along a crease and to its neighbours with a locking fold, so the box holds firm when closed and releases evenly when opened. We set those creases to suit your board weight and the weight of the item inside, so the walls do not spring open in transit and do not stick when you want them to fall.
Unlike a rigid gift box, an expandable hexagon box arrives flat and folds up in a minute or so, which makes it practical for brands sending dozens or hundreds of kits. It also costs less to store and post than a magnetic box, while still giving a far more memorable opening than a plain carton or bag.
Using the Inside as Well as the Outside
Because the panels lie flat once opened, the inside of each wall becomes a display surface. This is where an expandable hexagon box really earns its cost. You can print a message across the six inner panels, a step-by-step story, a product guide or a discount code that only appears when the box is fully open. Some brands print a pattern outside and a solid contrast colour inside so the reveal feels like a change of scene.
Think about what the recipient sees in order. The outside is the first impression and should carry the logo clearly. The top panel or lid is the first thing touched. The inner panels are read last, while the product is in the hand, so they suit a thank-you note or instructions rather than the brand name for the third time. Folding board takes inside and outside print in one pass, so both sets of panels cost little extra.
- Outer walls: logo, pattern and product name
- Top or lid: a short line that invites opening
- Inner panels: message, usage tips or a reveal graphic
- Base platform: a printed ring or insert slot for the item

What Fits Inside an Expandable Hexagon Box
These boxes suit compact items that look good sitting alone: a candle, a small perfume bottle, a jar of skincare, a watch, a figurine, a mug or a few chocolates in a central tray. Very tall or heavy items are less suitable because the walls need to fold out cleanly, and a heavy object can stop them dropping evenly. As a rule of thumb, if the item weighs more than a large candle, we would suggest a reinforced base or a different style.
To keep the product centred, we can add a card insert in the base with a die-cut hole or cradle. For a jar or bottle this stops it rolling as the walls open. For several small pieces, a six-pocket insert that mirrors the hexagon shape looks especially tidy.
For food gifts, such as chocolates or macarons, an inner tray or a sealed bag keeps the product separate from the board, and food-contact grade board is available on request. For cosmetics, a small shred bed or tissue under the item adds colour once the walls open. A card insert with a die-cut hole keeps a bottle upright as the walls open.
Sizing and Board Choices
Size is measured across the hexagon from one flat side to the opposite flat side, plus the wall height. Measure your item at its widest point and its tallest point, then allow around 10 mm of clearance across and 5 to 10 mm above. If you are using an insert, add its thickness to the height.
A 350 to 400 gsm folding boxboard is the usual starting point. It is stiff enough to hold the hexagon shape, folds cleanly along the creases and takes full-colour print on both sides. For heavier gifts we move to a thicker board or laminate two layers together. Kraft board gives a natural look and folds well, though fine detail prints less sharply on brown stock.
Colour on the inside panels is usually printed on the reverse of the same sheet, so the board needs to take ink on both faces. We pick a board with a clean white back for double-sided work, and a kraft board with a plain back when the inside should stay natural brown.
- Measure flat-to-flat width of the item plus clearance
- Measure the height and add any insert thickness
- Choose board weight by item weight, not just appearance
- Ask for a plain sample before a full run if the reveal is critical
Where These Boxes Work Best
Product launches and press kits are the classic use: a reviewer opens the box on camera and the reveal does part of your marketing. Wedding and event planners use smaller versions as favour boxes on each place setting. Subscription brands use them for a special edition month. Corporate teams order them for client gifts where the inner panels carry a personal message from the company.
They also suit retail gift sets, especially in shops where the staff can demonstrate the opening at the counter. Once a customer has seen it, the box itself becomes part of why they buy.
If you are unsure whether the format suits your item, send us a description or photo and we will say honestly. Sometimes a standard hexagon box with a lid, or a pyramid box, gives a better result for the money. For a box that stays closed, our standard hexagon boxes share the same footprint.
Label Every Panel Inside or Outside Before You Send Artwork
An expandable hexagon has more printed surfaces than any ordinary carton, and half of them are seen only after the box opens. Before sending artwork, decide what each surface does: the outer walls carry the brand, the inner walls carry the message or pattern that appears as the box unfolds, and the base holds the product. Measure the item's widest point and height, allow around 10 mm across and 5 to 10 mm above, and say whether it needs a die-cut hole to hold a bottle upright as the walls fall away. For a launch filmed under ring lights, choose a matt or soft-touch laminate, and consider a plain structural sample first, since a magnetic closure on the lid changes how the opening feels.
Send the product size, the panel plan and your artwork, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day. The free proof shows the flat layout with every panel labelled inside or outside. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, boxes arrive flat with a folding guide by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, and misprints or damage reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.

Expandable Hexagon Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering expandable hexagon boxes.
How does an expandable hexagon box open?
Depending on the style, you pull a tab, lift the lid or twist the top, and the six walls fold outwards around the base. The item is left standing on the base with the inside panels on show. We can send a short folding guide with your order.
Will the box stay closed during posting?
Yes. The locking folds hold the walls upright when closed, and we can add a small sticker seal or ribbon for extra security. For posting, we suggest placing the hexagon box inside a plain mailer so the outer artwork stays clean.
Can you print on the inside panels?
Yes, and we recommend it, because the inside is what people see after opening. Inside and outside print are handled in the same run. The proof marks each panel so you can check orientation.
How heavy can the item be?
Small and medium gifts up to roughly the weight of a large candle work well in standard board. Heavier items need a thicker or laminated board and sometimes a reinforced base. Tell us the weight and we suggest the right construction.
Can I hold a bottle upright inside?
A card insert with a die-cut hole in the base keeps a bottle or jar centred and upright as the walls fall open. We size the hole to your bottle's base diameter. Send us the measurements or a sample photo with a ruler.
Are they delivered assembled?
They arrive flat to save space and delivery cost. Folding takes a short while once you have done a few. If your event needs them assembled, ask and we will quote for it.
Can I order a plain sample first?
Yes, a plain structural sample lets you test the opening with your actual product before printing. It is a sensible step for launch kits where the reveal matters most. Ask for one with your custom quote.
Which finish keeps an expandable hexagon from glaring on camera as it opens?
Matt or soft-touch lamination avoids glare under ring lights and phone cameras, which matters because the opening is usually filmed. Gloss looks rich in hand but reflects studio lights on every unfolding wall.
Can I use expandable hexagon boxes as wedding favours?
The small favour size suits sweets, mini candles or soaps on each place setting. You can print the couple's names and date on the lid and a short message inside. Different designs can be split within one run.
How much room should a candle have inside an expandable hexagon box?
Measure the candle's widest point and its height, then allow around 10 mm across and 5 to 10 mm above the wick. The walls need that clearance to fold outwards without catching the product.
When will my launch boxes arrive?
Production takes 4–7 working days after you approve the proof, and free tracked UK mainland delivery follows in 2–3 working days. If you have an event date, tell us when you request your custom quote so we can plan around it.
