Custom Raised Lid Boxes
Raised lid boxes are two-piece boxes where the lid does not drop all the way down, so a printed band of the base stays on show beneath it. That visible step gives raised lid boxes a layered, crafted look that suits gift sets, hampers and premium retail products.

How the Raised Lid Works
In a standard two-piece box the lid covers the base completely. In a raised lid box, the base has an inner neck or the lid is made shallower, so it stops partway and leaves a strip of the base visible. That strip can be a contrast colour, a pattern or a printed line of text, and it frames the box like a ribbon without the cost or fuss of tying one.
The effect is especially strong when the lid and base are different colours. A white lid over a black base looks crisp, graphic and modern; a kraft lid over a printed base looks warm, honest and handmade. Customers see two layers before they open the box, and the lift of the lid feels more deliberate, almost like unwrapping a present twice.
Construction Options
Raised lid boxes can be built in several ways, depending on budget and how premium the box needs to feel.
- Rigid greyboard lid and base wrapped in paper, the most luxurious version
- Folding board lid and base that ship flat and are assembled by hand
- Base with a separate inner neck that the lid rests on
- Lid with a shallow depth that leaves part of the base exposed
- Corrugated versions for heavier gift sets and hampers

Designing the Visible Band
The band of base that shows below the lid is the signature of this box, so plan it carefully. It is usually between 10 and 30 mm tall, depending on the overall box height. A band that is too narrow looks like a mistake; one that is too wide makes the lid look small. We will suggest a proportion that suits your box size on the proof.
Use the band for a strong brand colour, a repeat of your logo, a tagline or the product name. Some brands print a different colour band for each variant in a range, so a shelf of boxes looks colour-coded. Others keep the band plain and let the contrast between lid and base do the work.
Remember that the band is seen at eye level on a shelf, while the lid is seen from above. On a counter or a low table, the lid design matters most; on a tall shelf, the band and the front face of the lid carry the message. Plan the most important words for wherever the shopper will be looking. Foil and spot colour on the band are compared in the print and finish options guide.
Choosing Sizes for Raised Lid Boxes
Start with the contents. For a gift set, lay the items out as they will sit in the box, including any insert or tissue, and measure the length, width and height. Then add a little clearance on each side. The total height of the box is the base height plus the part of the lid that sits above it, so tell us how much band you want showing and we will work out both pieces.
Shallow raised lid boxes suit scarves, stationery sets and flat accessories. Deeper boxes suit bottles, candles, food hampers and bath sets. If you plan a range of sizes, keeping the band height the same across all of them makes the collection look consistent.
Postage is worth a thought before you settle the size. A box only a few millimetres larger than needed can push a parcel into a higher price band, and a gift set that rattles in an oversized box needs extra filling. Measure the contents carefully, then check the outer size against the cartons or mailers you already use for shipping. Our guide to measuring a product for a box covers clearances for sets.
Inserts, Tissue and the Reveal
Because raised lid boxes are often used for gifts, the inside deserves attention. A card insert with cut-outs keeps bottles and jars upright and stops them knocking together. For softer items, a sheet of branded tissue folded over the contents adds a final layer before the reveal. A printed message under the lid is a simple touch that customers notice.
For food hampers, a shredded paper bed under the products looks generous and fills gaps. If the box is heavy, a ribbon pull under the base helps lift it out of a carrier bag or a larger shipping carton.
The fit between lid and base affects the reveal more than people expect. Too tight and the customer has to wrestle the lid off, which spoils the moment and can tear the wrap. Too loose and the lid slides about or falls off when the box is tilted. We build the lid to a tolerance that lets it lift with a steady pull while still holding firm when the box is carried by its sides. With rigid boxes you can feel the air cushion as the lid lowers, which is part of their appeal.
Who Chooses Raised Lid Boxes
Gift shops and online gift brands use them for hand-picked sets. Cosmetics and skincare brands use them for collections of creams and serums. Food producers use them for hampers of preserves, biscuits and sauces. Fashion and accessory brands use shallow versions for scarves, ties and wallets. Corporate buyers order them for welcome packs and client gifts, where the band can carry the company name.
Wedding and event planners order smaller raised lid boxes as favours and bridesmaid gifts, with names printed on the band.
Subscription brands like the style too, because a box that looks layered and finished on arrival needs no extra wrapping. When the raised lid box goes inside a plain mailer, the customer still gets a gift-like moment as soon as the outer carton is opened, and the box itself is often kept for storage. A lid that stays attached on a hinge is covered under hinged lid boxes with magnets.
Pick the Band Height Before the Artwork
The visible band is the whole point of a raised lid box, so decide its height before anyone designs the lid. On a 40 mm accessory box a 10 mm band is enough; on a 120 mm hamper, 30 mm looks balanced, and the band should carry a colour the lid does not, or the step disappears. Measure the contents, add 5 mm of clearance each way, and tell us the inside size and the band height together so both pieces are drawn in proportion.
Send the inside size, the band height and the artwork for the lid and base, and a custom quote arrives by email within one working day, with prices from £0.25 depending on construction, size and finishes. The free design proof shows both pieces flat with the band marked. Raised lid boxes go into production for 4 to 7 working days after approval and travel by free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days; boxes that arrive damaged or misprinted are reprinted or refunded if reported within 10 days. A lid that curves rather than steps is covered on the dome lid boxes with curved tops page.

Raised Lid Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering raised lid boxes.
How much of the base should show below a raised lid on a hamper box?
Between 10 and 30 mm, in proportion to the box height: a 10 mm band on a shallow accessory box and up to 30 mm on a 120 mm hamper. The proof shows the band marked on both pieces so the proportion can be judged before anything is made.
Should the lid and base of a raised lid box be different colours?
Usually yes, because the contrast between the lid and the exposed band is what shows the step. Each piece can have its own print or wrap paper, and a single foil line on the band is a common way to mark it.
Do raised lid boxes come flat?
Folding versions arrive flat and are assembled by hand. Rigid versions arrive made up.
Can I print text on the visible band?
Yes, the band is a good place for a tagline, product name or logo repeat.
How do I work out the box height?
Measure the contents including any insert, add clearance, then tell us how much band you want to show. We calculate the base and lid heights from there.
Can raised lid boxes hold heavy items?
Yes, rigid or corrugated versions suit bottles, jars and hampers. Add a ribbon pull under the base for easier lifting.
Can I use a different band colour for each product?
Yes, many brands colour-code the band by variant. It keeps the shelf organised and easy to shop.
What insert works for bottles?
A card insert with round cut-outs holds bottles upright and apart. We size the cut-outs to your bottles.
How much do raised lid boxes cost?
Prices start from £0.25 depending on construction, size and finish. You will have a custom quote for these raised lid boxes by email within one working day.
Can you print under the lid?
Yes, inside lid print is a popular place for a thank-you message or care instructions.
What if the lids on a batch of raised lid boxes arrive crushed?
Rigid lids travel made up, so check the corners of a few from each carton. Send photos within 10 days of delivery and the affected boxes are reprinted or refunded.
