Custom Hinged Lid Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom hinged lid boxes are folding card or corrugated boxes with a lid attached along the back, so it opens and closes without ever coming loose. They suit retail products, gift sets and repeat-use packs where an attached lid is more practical than a separate one.

An Everyday Box With a Built-In Lid

Not every product needs a heavy rigid box. Folding hinged lid boxes give the same practical benefit, a lid that stays attached, in a lighter, flat-packed format that costs far less to store and ship. They fold from a single die-cut sheet, with the lid formed as an extension of the back panel and a tuck flap at the front.

That makes them a good everyday choice for products people open repeatedly: tea selections, stationery sets, cosmetics, craft supplies, small electronics and toys. The lid closes neatly each time, and nothing gets lost.

Because the lid is part of the same sheet as the base, there is no risk of a lid and base being printed in slightly different shades or getting mixed up in packing. One box, one piece, one consistent print.

For retailers, an attached lid also reduces damage on the shop floor. Customers who open a box to look inside cannot walk off and leave the lid somewhere else, and the product goes back on the shelf looking complete.

Styles of Custom Hinged Lid Boxes

Within the hinged family there are several constructions, each with a slightly different feel.

If you are not sure which construction suits your product, send a sample or a photo. We will suggest the style that balances cost, strength and presentation for your use. Premium sets that need a wrapped, made-up box use our rigid hinged boxes for premium sets.

  • Tuck-front hinged box: lid tucks into the front, quick and economical
  • Hinged box with lock tab: lid locks with a die-cut tab for security
  • Cigar-style box: shallow hinged box with a full overlapping lid
  • Hinged corrugated box: tougher version for posting and heavier goods
  • Hinged display box: lid folds back to form a display header

Board Choice

Folding boxboard of 300 to 400 gsm suits most retail products. It prints sharply and folds cleanly, and it can be laminated for a premium feel. Kraft board gives a natural look for food, craft and wellness brands. E-flute corrugated is better for heavier items and for boxes that will be posted without an outer carton.

The hinge itself is a crease, and creases are where card can crack if it is folded many times. We use a reinforced crease and suitable board grain direction, so the lid opens and closes smoothly over many uses.

Lamination is especially useful on hinged boxes because the lid is handled every time the box opens. A matt or soft-touch finish stays looking fresh after many uses, whereas uncoated board can pick up fingerprints and wear along the front edge. The difference between the two is set out in our card and corrugated grades explained guide.

Hinged Display Boxes for Counters

A hinged lid can do double duty in shops. When the lid is folded fully back and tucked in, it stands up behind the box as a printed header card. Retailers use this for counter displays of sweets, lip balms, keyrings and small accessories. The same box ships closed and turns into a display in seconds.

Design the inside of the lid with this in mind, since it becomes the front-facing header once folded back. A strong logo and a short product message work best.

Display boxes work best when the product is small and the price point is low enough for impulse buying. Place the most colourful products at the front, and keep the box shallow enough that the back row is still visible over the front edge.

Retailers appreciate boxes that arrive pre-filled and ready to place on the counter. If you supply shops, design the box so it ships closed in an outer carton and opens into a display with a single fold. A box that opens into a display with a printed header is on our counter display boxes with a header page.

Sizing and Inserts

Measure your product and add a few millimetres all round. If the box holds several items, such as a tea selection or a stationery set, a card insert with compartments keeps everything in place and looks tidy when the lid opens. For fragile items, a corrugated or foam insert adds protection.

For subscription and gift sets that change contents, choose a slightly roomier box with a simple divider, and use tissue or crinkle paper to fill any gaps.

If the box is for posting, measure the closed box against postal size bands too. A hinged lid box that fits a large letter band can save significantly on postage for small, light items.

Print Options

Full colour printing covers the outside and, if needed, the inside of the box. Many brands print a pattern or message inside the lid, which the customer sees each time the box opens. Spot colours suit simple branding on kraft.

Finishes such as matt or gloss lamination, spot UV and foil stamping turn a simple folding box into something that feels considered. A foil logo on the lid and a printed inside are an effective and affordable combination.

Keep text away from the hinge crease, where it can crack or distort when folded. We flag anything in risky areas in the proof.

On kraft board, a single dark ink or a white ink gives a clean result without heavy coverage. On white board, full colour gives you freedom to use photography, patterns and multiple brand colours across every panel.

If the box will sit on a shelf with the lid closed, put the product name and a clear image on the front and top. If it will be displayed open, give equal attention to the inside of the lid and the front edge.

Decide How Many Times the Lid Will Open

A hinged lid box is specified by its hinge, and the hinge is specified by use. A box opened once by a customer can use a scored card hinge; a box opened every day, such as a counter display or a storage box, needs corrugated board or a reinforced crease so the hinge does not crack. Tell us which, with the product size and the quantity. Then decide whether the lid should lock shut with a tab, stay open as a display header, or simply rest closed. Say if the box needs compartments, because an insert adds depth. Artwork covers the lid, the sides and the inside of the lid if you want print there, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows the box flat and assembled. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, boxes start from £0.25 on simple designs at volume, and minimums are quoted per job. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Boxes with a separate lid rather than a hinge are our lidded paperboard boxes with a loose lid.

Hinged Lid Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering hinged lid boxes.

What is the difference between a hinged lid box and a rigid hinged box?

A folding hinged lid box is made from card or corrugated board and ships flat. A rigid hinged box uses thick greyboard and arrives assembled, giving a heavier, more luxurious feel.

Will the hinge crack after repeated use?

We use a reinforced crease and the correct board grain so the lid opens smoothly many times. Laminated board also helps protect the crease.

Can the box turn into a counter display?

Yes. A hinged display box lets the lid fold back and tuck in to form a header card behind the product.

Can the inside of a hinged lid carry print?

Yes, inside print is popular because it is seen every time the box opens, and on a display box the inside of the lid becomes the header. It is printed on the same sheet as the outside. We quote it as an extra print area.

Are hinged lid boxes strong enough to post?

Corrugated hinged boxes can be posted without an outer carton. Card boxes are best posted inside a mailer.

Can I add compartments?

Yes, card inserts with compartments suit tea selections, stationery sets and gift sets. The compartment plan is drawn up for you and shown in the proof.

Do folding hinged lid boxes arrive flat?

Yes, folding hinged lid boxes are delivered flat in bundles and fold by hand in a few seconds, which saves storage space. Rigid hinged boxes arrive made up. The quote states which you are getting.

Which board is best for food products?

Folding boxboard or kraft board suits most dry food products such as tea, biscuits and sweets. If the food touches the board directly, ask for food-contact grade board when you request a quote.

Can the lid lock shut?

Yes, a die-cut lock tab holds the lid closed securely. It is useful for products that might be knocked open on a shelf.

Can I order a small quantity first?

Yes, minimums are quoted per job. Many brands start small and increase quantities once the design is proven.
