Custom Black Gable Boxes With Handles

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom black gable boxes are carry boxes with a peaked handle top, made from deep black board so they look smart in a customer's hand rather than like a standard takeaway carton. Upmarket cafés, patisseries and boutiques use them when the bag or box leaving the shop needs to match the price of what is inside.

Why Black Changes the Feel

A gable box is a practical shape. Two sloping top panels meet in a handle, the base locks flat, and the box stands up on a counter or in a car footwell without tipping. In white or kraft it reads as a cheerful, everyday takeaway. In black it reads as something altogether more considered, the sort of box people carry out of a hotel patisserie or a design shop.

Black also hides the small marks that build up on a box during a busy service: a smear of icing, a fingerprint, a scuff from a counter edge. It gives foil and white print a strong contrast, so a simple logo looks sharper than it would on a pale board. For brands with a dark colour palette, it ties the takeaway straight into the shop interior.

There is a practical upside for small businesses as well. Because the board itself provides the colour, a single foil or white logo is often all the print needed, which keeps the cost of a premium-looking box surprisingly close to that of a fully printed white one. For a bright accent in the same shape, red gable boxes for gifting use the same dieline with a different board colour.

Who Reaches for Black Gable Boxes

These boxes tend to appear where presentation matters as much as convenience. Cafés that want the cake visible usually choose gable boxes with a clear window instead, keeping black for the sides.

  • Patisseries and dessert shops sending out cakes, tarts and macarons.
  • Upmarket cafés offering takeaway brunch, pastries and sandwiches.
  • Chocolatiers and confectioners selling gift selections.
  • Boutiques and concept stores packing candles, accessories and small homeware.
  • Restaurants with a premium takeaway menu that want to stand apart from delivery cartons.
  • Corporate event teams handing out gift boxes at launches and conferences.

Printing on Black Board

Standard four-colour print does not show well on black, because process inks are transparent and the board colour swamps them. Instead, black boxes are usually decorated in one of three ways. Foil blocking in gold, silver, copper or rose gold gives a bright, reflective logo that is the most popular choice. White ink printed on black gives a clean, modern contrast. Spot UV varnish creates a glossy logo on matt black that shows only as the box catches the light, a subtle effect many luxury brands love.

If you want full-colour images, we can print them on a white base layer first, or use a white board laminated with a black outer, but the classic look is minimal: one logo, one finish, lots of black. Keep the design simple and let the board colour do the work.

Foil on black is unforgiving of very fine detail. Hairline strokes and tiny text can fill in or break up, so we may suggest thickening thin parts of a logo slightly. The proof will flag anything at risk.

White ink sometimes needs two passes to look solid on black board. We allow for that in the quote, so the logo comes out bright rather than slightly grey. The difference between white ink and foil is shown with photos in the print and finish comparison guide.

Sizes for Food and Gifts

Gable boxes are sized by their base footprint and the height to the shoulder, where the sloping top begins. For a slice of cake or a pair of pastries, a small footprint and modest height is enough. For a whole cake or a takeaway meal for two, choose a wider base. For gifts, measure the item and add room for tissue paper or shredded fill.

If you serve food, check the box against your heaviest typical order, including drinks if they go in the same box. Handles on gable boxes are strong, but a very heavy load in a tall box can make the handle pull. A wider, lower box spreads the weight better.

A useful habit is to keep a sample of each size on the counter while you work out the menu. Staff quickly learn which box fits which order, and you will soon see whether a size is missing from the line-up. Sizes for cakes and gifts can be checked against the gift box size list, which uses the same internal measurements.

Food Contact and Inserts

Black board is a coloured outer surface, so for food the inside surface matters. We use a board with a clean inner lining, and food-contact grade board is available on request. For oily or creamy food, a grease-resistant inner coating stops marks from showing through the black.

Inserts keep food and gifts in place while the box swings from a hand. A card insert with cut-outs holds cupcakes or macarons upright; a tray holds a slice of cake flat; a divided insert holds two or three gift items apart. For gifts, black or coloured tissue paper inside adds to the moment of opening without any extra print.

For gifts that are not food, a coloured tissue in your brand colour against the black interior makes a strong first impression. Gold or silver tissue picks up a foil logo neatly. If the box carries cupcakes, a card insert with cupcake holes stops them sliding into the gable.

Assembly at a Busy Counter

Most gable boxes arrive flat and fold up in seconds. An auto-lock base snaps into place as the box is opened, so staff only need to fold the top panels and close the handle. That makes them practical for a café counter where speed matters. A tuck base is a little cheaper but takes a moment longer to assemble.

Store flat boxes in a dry place away from steam and ovens, which can warp the board. Fold a few ahead of a busy period and keep them stacked nested by size so they are ready to grab.

If space under the counter is tight, choose the smallest set of sizes that covers your menu. Two well chosen gable sizes often handle most orders, with a larger cake box kept for whole bakes. Busy counters that need the base to lock on its own choose gable boxes with an auto-lock bottom and pay a little more per box for the time saved.

Decide Between White Ink and Foil on Black

On black board there are really two ways to print a logo, and the choice should come before the quote because the costs differ. White ink gives a clean matt mark and works for text, patterns and large areas; it needs two passes to look solid, which we handle. Foil gives a metallic line that catches light and suits a single logo or monogram, but it does not cover big areas well. Many bakeries use white for the body text and one small foil mark on the gable.

Send us the sizes, quantities, finish and your logo, and we reply within one working day with a quote from £0.25 per box. The free proof shows the white or foil areas separately so you can see where each lands. Boxes are made in 4 to 7 working days after approval, with tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses included; crushed or misprinted boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. If you want the same handle box in a natural shade for a daytime range, brown kraft gable boxes take the identical dieline.

Black Gable Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering black gable boxes.

Can you print full colour on black gable boxes?

Standard full colour does not show well on black. We can print on a white base layer for images, but most clients choose foil, white ink or spot UV for a cleaner look.

Which foil colour works best on black?

Gold is the most popular, followed by silver, copper and rose gold. Each gives strong contrast on matt black.

Will grease show through the black board?

It can on uncoated board. For oily or creamy food, choose a grease-resistant inner coating that stops marks appearing on the outside.

How much weight can the handle carry?

Enough for pastries, cakes and a meal for two in a sensibly sized box. For heavy orders, a wider, lower box spreads the load better.

Can I add a window to show the cake?

Yes. A die-cut window with a clear film patch shows the contents and suits cakes and decorated bakes.

Are inserts available for cupcakes and macarons?

Yes. We make card inserts with cut-outs that hold each piece upright so they do not slide while the box is carried.

Do black boxes mark easily?

Black hides food smudges well, but matt black can show fingerprints. Soft-touch lamination resists marks and feels luxurious.

How quickly do they fold?

With an auto-lock base, a gable box pops into shape in a few seconds, which suits a busy counter.

Can I see foil and white ink options on the proof?

Yes. Ask for both and we will show them side by side so you can choose the look that suits your logo.

Do black gable boxes suit non-food gifts?

Yes. Boutiques use them for candles, accessories and small homeware, often with tissue paper inside.

How few black gable boxes can a café order for a trial?

Enough for a week or two of orders is a sensible first run, and we price it per job rather than against a fixed minimum. Black board with white ink costs the same per box at small volumes as at large ones apart from the setup, so a trial of a single size is realistic. Reorders then run from the same artwork without a new proof.
