Custom Paper Sleeves

from £0.25 a sleevePriced per job · low minimums

Custom paper sleeves are lightweight printed wraps that slip around a food tray, a bundle or a light product to brand it and hold it together. Cafés, delis, bakers and small retailers use them because they cost little, look smart and turn plain packs into something that clearly belongs to you.

Lighter Than a Box, Smarter Than a Sticker

Paper sleeves sit between a label and a full box. A sticker brands a pack but covers only a small area. A box brands everything but adds cost, weight and bulk. A sleeve wraps around the pack, giving you a wide printed band for a logo, product name and short description, while the tray or bundle underneath does the job of holding the product.

Because they are made from paper rather than board, these sleeves are thin and flexible. They suit products that are already contained, such as a sandwich in a clear tray, a stack of biscuits on a board, a bundle of napkins or a set of folded tea towels, where the sleeve's job is mainly to brand and inform rather than protect.

They also make it easy to sell several products in the same base packaging. One plain tray can carry a different sleeve for each flavour or variant, which keeps stock simple and lets you add new products quickly.

For small producers, sleeves are also a forgiving way to start. You can launch a product in a plain tray with a printed sleeve, see how it sells, then move to a fully printed pack later if volumes justify it. If a recipe or price changes, only the sleeve needs updating, not the packaging underneath. Brands often pair them with printed packaging sleeves so the whole order arrives in one look.

Paper Choices

Most paper sleeves use an uncoated or lightly coated paper between about 120 and 250 gsm. Lighter papers wrap tightly around soft bundles and small items. Heavier papers hold their shape better on trays and stand up to handling in a fridge or on a shelf. Your custom quote names the paper and weight, so you can compare it with what you use now.

White paper gives the brightest colour reproduction. Kraft paper gives a natural, artisan look that suits bakeries, delis and handmade goods. Coloured papers can create a strong look with a single dark ink. For sleeves around chilled food, ask about a paper with a light coating that resists condensation so the sleeve stays crisp in the fridge. If a sleeve will touch the food directly, tell us when you ask for a price; the stock and inks for food packs are named on your custom quote. Our explainer on board and card types helps you choose a paper weight that holds its shape.

Measuring for a Neat Fit

Measure around the pack at the point where the sleeve will sit, and decide how wide the band should be. A sleeve that is too loose slips off; one that is too tight crumples the tray or bundle. We add a small overlap for the glued join, or leave the ends open if you prefer to wrap and seal with a sticker.

For trays, measure the outside of the tray including any lip, because the sleeve has to pass over it. For soft bundles such as folded textiles, measure them compressed the way they will be packed. Sending us a sample tray or product is the easiest way to get the fit right first time. The measuring guide for custom packaging shows how to take the width and depth a sleeve has to wrap.

Print That Works on a Narrow Band

A paper sleeve is often only a few centimetres wide on the front, so the design has to be focused. The product name and your logo should be clear at arm's length. Ingredients, allergens, prices and use-by panels can sit on the back or underside. A simple colour band for each variant helps customers pick the right one from a fridge or shelf.

Printing can be one or two colours for a bold, economical look or full colour for photography and illustration. On sleeves for food packs, the stock and inks are named on your custom quote. If you need space to write or stamp dates, we can leave a clear panel on the back.

Think about how the sleeve will be seen in a fridge or on a shelf. In a grab-and-go chiller, packs are often stacked or placed side by side, so the front edge of the sleeve may be the only part on show. Placing the product name where it remains visible when packs are stacked helps customers find what they want without lifting everything out.

Consistency across your range matters too. Using the same layout, typeface and logo position on every sleeve, and changing only the colour band and product name, makes a fridge full of different products look like one brand. For a sleeve that slides over a matching base, tray and sleeve gift boxes combine the band with a sturdy tray.

Practical Packing Tips

Sleeves are applied by hand in most small businesses, so a design that slides on without fuss saves time. Pre-glued sleeves slip over trays quickly, while flat sleeves that wrap and seal with a sticker suit irregular shapes. Store sleeves flat and dry until use, especially paper ones, because damp can make them curl.

If you make several products, keep sleeves for each variant clearly separated at the packing bench so the wrong sleeve does not end up on the wrong product. A different colour band for each variant makes mistakes easy to spot.

If you pack in larger numbers, consider ordering sleeves in packs counted per variant, so the right quantity of each is ready for each day's production. That small step saves time hunting through mixed bundles first thing in the morning. Labelling each bundle with the variant name on the outside of its wrapper makes it quicker still, and helps new staff pick the right sleeve without needing to ask. Clothing brands packing pairs of socks can look at our custom sock sleeves for retail, which are cut for that job.

Paper Sleeves Questions

What buyers ask before ordering paper sleeves.

What is the difference between a paper sleeve and a packaging sleeve?

A paper sleeve is thin and flexible, so it hugs a sandwich tray or a folded tea towel. A board packaging sleeve is stiffer and slides over a carton, much like a book jacket.

Can paper sleeves go in the fridge?

Yes. For chilled food, ask for a lightly coated paper that resists condensation so the sleeve stays crisp.

Which paper weight should I choose?

Lighter papers wrap soft bundles tightly. Heavier papers hold their shape on trays. We will suggest a weight for your pack.

Can we print allergens and dates?

Yes. Ingredients and allergens can go on the back, and we can leave a clear panel for dates.

Do sleeves come pre-glued?

Pre-glued sleeves slip straight over a tray, which is fastest for one fixed pack size. Flat sleeves wrap round and close with a sticker, which suits bundles that vary slightly in size.

Can one tray carry different sleeves for each flavour?

Yes. That is one of the main reasons businesses use sleeves, and a colour band for each flavour keeps them easy to tell apart.

Is kraft paper available?

Yes. Kraft gives a natural, artisan look that suits bakeries and delis, and a single dark ink prints cleanly on its brown surface.

Which stock and inks are used on food packs?

Tell us what the sleeve wraps and whether it touches the food. The stock and inks for food packs are named on your custom quote, so you can check them against your own food safety records before you order.

How do I measure a tray for a sleeve?

Run a tape round the outside of the tray at the point where the sleeve will sit, including any lip, and note the band width you want. Sending a sample tray is the surest way to a snug fit.

Can sleeves be used for non-food products?

Yes. They brand folded textiles, candles, soaps and small gifts in plain packs, and a belly band round a pair of socks or a tea towel set is a common use.

How long does delivery take after approval?

Production takes 4–7 working days, then free tracked delivery to the UK mainland takes 2–3 working days.
