Custom Perforated Boxes That Tear Open Into a Display
Custom perforated boxes ship your products closed and protected, then open along a perforated line to become a shelf-ready display in seconds. Shop staff tear off the front panel, set the box on the counter and the products are on sale.

Two Jobs, One Box
Most products travel to a shop in one carton and are then unpacked into a separate display tray. That means two pieces of packaging, extra handling, and a shop assistant spending time arranging stock. A perforated box removes that step. It is printed on the outside like a retail display, closed for transit, and fitted with a line of small cuts that lets one panel tear away cleanly when it arrives.
Retailers like it because it saves time on the shop floor. Brands like it because the display is certain to look the way they designed it, rather than relying on a busy shop to arrange products neatly. And because the box is printed on every panel, it advertises the product on the stockroom shelf before it even reaches the counter. Shops that want the products seen before opening often start with window boxes that fold flat instead.
Where the Perforation Goes
The perforation line decides how the display looks once opened. A common layout tears away the top and the upper part of the front, leaving a low front lip and a taller back panel that becomes a header card. Another tears away the lid only, creating an open tray. For hanging products or larger items, the whole front panel can come away, leaving a three-sided display.
The line itself is a row of short cuts with small bridges between them. Too many bridges and the panel tears unevenly or needs a knife; too few and the box splits open in transit. We set the cut and bridge pattern to suit the board and the weight of the contents, and add a thumb notch or a printed tear here arrow so staff know where to start.
It helps to sketch the opened display before the closed box. Draw what the shopper should see from the front of the counter, then work backwards to where the tear line must run to leave that shape. This simple step avoids a common mistake, where the box looks great closed but leaves an awkward, half-height wall in front of the products once opened. Our guide to choosing a box style compares trays, headers and three-sided displays.

Products That Suit Custom Perforated Boxes
Small, repeat-purchase items sold at the till are the natural fit: snack bars, sachets of hot chocolate or protein powder, tea bags in envelopes, lip balms, lollipops, sample packs of skincare, single-serve sauces, phone accessories, batteries and cable ties. Anything that a shopper might grab while paying looks better in a branded display than loose in a basket.
Perforated boxes also work for wholesale outers, where a larger corrugated case tears open to reveal a row of retail boxes inside, ready for a supermarket shelf. And they suit subscription and event packs, where a perforated window lets the recipient open one section at a time. Small square items such as candles or balms sometimes ship in cube boxes with a tear-off lid for the same reason.
Sizing for Products and Shelf Space
Start with the product count. Decide how many units go in each box, then how they sit: standing in rows, lying flat in stacks or angled toward the customer. Measure one unit, then the full arrangement, and add a small allowance so products slide in and out easily. The display height after tearing should leave enough of each product visible to read the name.
Then check the shelf or counter where the box will live. Many counters have limited depth, and a display that sticks out past the edge gets knocked. Ask your main stockists for the space they usually allow, or plan two sizes, a counter unit and a larger shelf unit, so the product fits wherever it is sold. The guide to measuring products for a box covers rows, stacks and angled layouts.
Board and Print
Folding board of around 350 to 400 gsm suits lighter products such as sachets and lip balms. E-flute corrugated suits heavier loads and boxes that travel in courier networks, because it resists crushing and holds the perforation line firm until it is needed. White-lined board gives the brightest print; kraft gives a natural look that suits wholefoods and craft brands.
Print every panel with the display in mind. Once torn, the inside of the back panel and the inner walls become visible, so printing the inside is usually worth it. The tear-away panel itself can carry shipping information, a barcode for the outer case and handling instructions, since it is discarded once the display is open. Matt or gloss lamination protects the display from handling on a busy counter.
Strong colour on the header card is worth the effort. It is the part of the display that sits highest and catches the eye from across the shop, so give it the product name, one benefit and the brand logo in large type, and keep everything else for the side panels. Premium ranges that need a heavier wrap use the same header idea on our designer boxes with a printed header.
Making Life Easy for Retailers
A display that is hard to open will often be left closed in the stockroom. Keep the tear line obvious, put the instructions on the outside, and test a few boxes with someone who has never seen them before. If it takes more than a few seconds to open, adjust the perforation or the thumb notch.
Retailers also appreciate a clear product code and quantity on the outer panels, so they can check deliveries without opening every box. A small reorder line or QR code on the back of the display helps them buy more when stock runs low.
If you supply chains with their own merchandising rules, send us their display guidelines before artwork starts, as some specify heights, header sizes or barcode positions. The rest of the retail and product box range covers the cartons that sit inside a wholesale outer.
Sketch the Open Display Before the Closed Box
A perforated box is ordered backwards: draw what the shopper should see on the counter first, then we work out where the tear line must run to leave that shape. Decide how many units go in and how they sit, standing or flat, measure one unit and the full arrangement, and ask your main stockists how much counter depth they allow. Say what the box weighs when full, because the bridge pattern on the perforation is set to the load and the board.
Send the sketch, the product dimensions, the count per box and the artwork, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with simple builds from £0.25 and low minimums quoted per job. The free proof shows the flat layout with the perforation line and thumb notch marked. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, taking 2–3 working days. Boxes that tear badly or arrive misprinted are reprinted or refunded when reported within 10 days. Products that need a permanent counter unit rather than a tear-open one can move to counter display boxes with a header.

Perforated Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering perforated boxes.
Will the box split open in transit?
We set the perforation pattern to suit the board and the weight of the contents, so it holds closed until someone deliberately tears it. Heavier loads get fewer, longer bridges.
Can retailers open it without a knife?
Yes, a thumb notch and printed tear arrow show where to start. The panel should come away cleanly by hand.
Which display style shows products best?
A tray with a tall back header suits most counter products. It shows the items clearly and keeps the brand visible above them.
Should I print inside the box?
Usually yes, because the inner walls become visible once the panel is torn away. A plain colour inside the back panel is enough to make the display look finished.
What should go on the tear-away panel?
Shipping details, outer barcode and handling notes, since that panel is removed once the display is open. Keep the brand message off it so nothing useful is thrown away.
Is corrugated or folding board better?
Folding board suits light products. Corrugated is better for heavier items and boxes that travel in courier networks.
Can the box hold dividers?
Yes, card dividers keep different flavours or variants in separate rows. They are cut to the same depth as the display so they do not show above the products.
How do I size the box for a shop counter?
Ask your main stockists how much depth they allow and size the display to fit without overhanging the edge. If stockists differ, a counter unit and a larger shelf unit cover both.
Can I trial the display with a few shops first?
Yes, minimums are low and quoted per job, so a small first run is practical. Ask the trial shops how long the box took to open and we adjust the perforation before the main run.
When will the boxes reach our warehouse?
We make the perforated boxes in 4–7 working days after approval, and they reach UK mainland addresses free and tracked within 2–3 working days. They ship flat with the perforation intact.
What if the perforation tears badly?
Let us know within 10 days with a photo or two of the perforated boxes, and we will reprint or refund them. Open a few from each bundle on arrival rather than finding out at the stockist.
