Custom Triangle Boxes in Prism and Wedge Shapes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom triangle boxes take a familiar product and give it a shape nobody expects, whether that is a long prism for a chocolate bar, a wedge for a sandwich or a slice of cheese, or a small triangular gift box on a shop counter. The shape does half the marketing, and your print does the rest.

Two Kinds of Triangle Box

When people ask for a triangle box they usually mean one of two shapes. The first is a triangular prism: a long box with a triangular cross-section, like a tent lying on its side. This is the shape of the famous Swiss chocolate bar, and it suits long, narrow products such as chocolate, biscotti, pens, cosmetics in tubes, and rolled posters or prints.

The second is a wedge: a box with a triangular footprint and flat top, like a slice of cake or a sandwich cut corner to corner. Wedge boxes hold sandwiches, cheese, cake slices, pizza slices and pie portions, and they can be grouped together into a circle for display.

Both shapes break the pattern of rectangular packaging and make a product easier to recognise from a distance. Knowing which one you need is the first step.

A third, less common option is a pyramid-like triangular box with a triangular base and sloping sides meeting at a point. It is a lovely novelty shape for favours and small gifts, though it holds less than you might expect, so we usually suggest it only for very small, light items. A true four-sided point is made as one of our pyramid boxes for small favours instead.

Products That Suit a Triangle

A triangle box works best when the shape suits the product inside or adds a sense of fun. These are the uses we see most: Six-sided versions of the same gift idea are shown on our hexagon boxes for gifts page.

  • Sandwich wedges: the classic triangle for a halved sandwich, popular with cafés, delis and meal deal suppliers.
  • Chocolate bars and confectionery: long prisms that make a premium bar look distinctive in a gift shop.
  • Cheese wedges: small wedge cartons for cheesemongers selling individual portions as gifts.
  • Cake and tart slices: single-slice wedges for bakeries and cafés selling by the piece.
  • Novelty gifts: tea samplers, socks, small toys and promotional items in a shape that gets noticed.
  • Rolled products: prints, maps and diplomas sent in a prism instead of a round tube, which will not roll off a desk.

How Triangle Boxes Are Built

A prism box is made from a single folded sheet with three long sides and triangular ends. The ends can tuck in, lock with a tab, or be closed with a separate triangular lid. For confectionery, a tear strip along one edge makes opening easy and adds a satisfying moment when the customer unwraps the box.

Wedge boxes have a triangular base, three walls and a lid that may be hinged or separate. Sandwich wedges usually have a window on the long side to show the filling, and they are often sealed with a sticker or a tamper-evident label.

Both styles fold flat for storage and assemble quickly. Larger or heavier prisms may use a thin corrugated board, while most food and gift triangles use folding boxboard.

Getting the Proportions Right

For a prism, measure the length of the product and the width of its base, then decide on the triangle's height. An equilateral triangle, where all three sides are the same, looks classic and balanced. A taller, narrower triangle looks more elegant and takes less shelf width, while a flatter, wider one stands more steadily.

For a wedge, measure the two short sides and the long side of the product, plus its height. Sandwich wedges are usually based on the bread size, and cheese and cake wedges on the slice angle. Allow a small margin so the product slides in without squashing.

We send a flat dieline with your quote, and it is worth folding a paper version and testing it with the real product before you approve the proof.

Shelf space is worth a thought as well. Prisms can lie on one face or stand on their end, and wedges can be stacked point to base in alternating rows to fill a rectangular shelf or shipping carton without wasted gaps. If you know how retailers will display your product, we can size the triangle so a set number fits neatly across their shelf or into a standard outer case. The same shelf-planning applies to cube boxes sold in rows, which these wedges often sit beside.

Food Contact and Practical Details

Triangle boxes that hold food directly, such as sandwiches, cheese and cake, should be made from board suitable for food contact. Food-contact grade board is available on request, and we note it on your quote. Grease-resistant board helps with buttery pastries and oily fillings.

Windows for sandwich wedges are usually covered in a clear film that keeps the food visible and protected. Labels with ingredients, allergens and use-by dates can be printed on the box or added at packing.

For chilled products, ask about board with a coating that resists condensation, so the box stays firm in a refrigerated display.

Sandwich makers supplying several shops often print one generic wedge and apply a filling label at packing, which keeps the menu flexible and the box order simple.

Printing on Three Sides

A triangle box presents two or three faces at once, depending on how it sits on the shelf. Prism boxes usually show two sloping sides at the front, so place your logo and product name on the face that will be seen most and repeat key information on the other. Wedges show their long side and top, so the brand often goes on the lid.

Bold designs that wrap around the corners make the shape feel deliberate. Stripes, geometric patterns and illustrations that continue across faces look especially striking on a triangle.

Finishes such as matt lamination, foil and embossing add a premium touch, particularly on chocolate and gift prisms.

Remember that one face of a prism will often be hidden underneath. Use that bottom panel for barcodes, ingredients and legal text, freeing the two visible faces for the design customers actually see on the shelf. Upload the artwork through the free proof request and we will map it to the three faces.

Fold a Paper Prism Before You Approve Anything

Triangle boxes are the one shape where a paper mock-up is worth more than any drawing, so ask for the dieline with the quote, print it, fold it and put the real product inside. A bar that sits short or a sandwich that will not clear the window shows up in a minute. Start by saying prism or wedge, then give the product length and base width for a prism, or the three sides and height for a wedge, and tell us if food touches the board.

Say how retailers will display the box, since prisms and wedges are sized differently to fill a shelf. A custom quote comes back by email within one working day with the dieline attached, with simpler styles from £0.25 and low minimums quoted per job. The free proof follows once the size is agreed. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and the flat boxes arrive by free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses in 2–3 working days. Misprinted or damaged boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Brands that want a four-sided twist on the same idea often look at trapezoid boxes with sloping sides as well.

Triangle Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering triangle boxes.

What is the difference between a prism and a wedge box?

A prism is a long box with a triangular cross-section, like a chocolate bar box. A wedge has a triangular footprint, like a sandwich or cake slice box.

Are triangle boxes suitable for sandwiches?

Yes. Sandwich wedges are a classic triangle format, usually with a clear window on the long side, and we can make them in food-contact grade board if you ask.

Can a triangle box have a tear strip?

Yes. Prism boxes often have a tear strip along one edge, which makes opening easy and feels satisfying.

Do triangle boxes fold flat?

Yes. Both prisms and wedges are supplied flat and fold up quickly when you pack them.

How do I choose the triangle's proportions?

An equilateral triangle looks balanced. A taller triangle looks elegant and takes less shelf width; a flatter one is more stable.

Can I post prints in a triangle box instead of a tube?

Yes. A prism protects rolled prints and will not roll off a desk or counter, which customers find handy.

Can triangle boxes be used in chilled displays?

Yes. A coated board resists condensation and keeps the box firm in a fridge.

Where should the logo go on a triangle box?

On the face that will be seen most on the shelf. Prisms usually show two sloping sides, and wedges show the lid and long side.

Can I get a sample of the shape before ordering?

We send a flat dieline you can print and fold. A made-up physical sample can also be quoted if you need one.

Our café wants sandwich wedges for a new menu. What timeline should we plan?
