Custom Decorative Gift Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom decorative gift boxes are printed boxes where the design itself is the selling point: florals, geometric repeats, illustrations or marbled patterns that make the box something people want to keep. Gift shops sell them empty or use them to present their own products.

When the Box Is Part of the Gift

Some packaging is meant to be thrown away. Decorative gift boxes are the opposite. A sturdy box covered in a pretty pattern gets reused for letters, jewellery, photographs or craft supplies, and it stays on a shelf long after the gift inside has gone. That long life is exactly why gift shops and stationery brands invest in good design.

A decorative box also does the wrapping for you. Customers who would normally buy paper, tape and ribbon can simply drop a gift in, close the lid and hand it over. For a shop, selling the box alongside the gift adds to the basket and solves a problem for the buyer at the same time.

For brands, a beautifully patterned box can be the signature of the business. A distinctive floral or illustrated print, used on every box, becomes as recognisable as the logo.

Printed Decorative Gift Boxes: Design Directions

There is no single look that works for every shop, but a few approaches come up again and again. Florals suit candle, soap and stationery brands. Geometric repeats in two or three colours look modern and suit homeware and menswear. Hand-drawn illustrations give a playful, artisan feel, and marbled or terrazzo prints look luxurious at a modest cost.

Whichever direction you choose, think about how the boxes look in a group. A shelf of boxes in one pattern but three colourways looks deliberate and inviting, while too many unrelated designs can look cluttered. Many shops pick one signature pattern and a single accent colour for each box size. p1 Shops with a hand-drawn identity sometimes start from our designer boxes with illustrated wraps.

Box Styles That Show a Pattern Best

Patterns need flat, unbroken surfaces to look their best. A two-piece box with a separate lid and base gives five clean faces on the lid alone, which is why it is the most popular choice. Nesting sets, where three or four sizes sit inside each other, are a gift shop favourite because they make an impressive display and sell as a set or singly.

Magnetic closure boxes, with a hinged lid that snaps shut, feel substantial and suit higher-priced gifts. Drawer boxes slide open and show a pattern on the inner tray as well as the sleeve. For lighter, everyday gifts, a printed folding carton with a tuck lid is the most affordable way to bring a pattern to a large range.

Shape is another way to catch the eye. Round boxes, hexagons and heart shapes all take a pattern well, though square and rectangular boxes remain the easiest to stack and store in a stockroom. A mix of one unusual shape among standard boxes catches the eye on a display table.

Rigid or Folding Board

Rigid boxes are made from thick greyboard wrapped in printed paper. They do not fold flat and feel solid in the hand, which suits keepsake boxes, nesting sets and premium gifts. The wrap paper carries the pattern, and it can be printed on smooth, textured or linen-effect papers.

Folding boxes are made from 350–400 gsm board and arrive flat, so they take up far less storage space. They suit shops that need a quantity of boxes for a wrapping service or for smaller products such as candles and cosmetics. A laminated finish protects the print from scuffs on the shop floor.

Rigid boxes can also be lined inside with a contrasting paper, which is a lovely detail on keepsake boxes. A floral outer with a solid-colour lining, or a plain outer with a patterned lining, adds a second layer of design for very little extra effort. p2 The two constructions are compared in the guide to board and card types.

Sizing a Range of Gift Boxes

Think about what customers buy most often. A gift shop might choose a small box of about 100 x 100 x 50 mm for jewellery and candles, a medium box of around 200 x 150 x 80 mm for toiletries and accessories, and a large box of 300 x 220 x 100 mm for scarves, clothing and hampers. Nesting sets work best when each size is about 20–25 mm smaller than the next on every side.

If the box will hold a specific product, measure it and add a few millimetres, then decide if tissue or shred goes inside, which needs extra depth.

For shops offering a wrapping service, a short range of three sizes covers almost everything and keeps stock manageable. Write the inside dimensions on the base of each box so staff can match a gift to the right size quickly. p2 The guide to measuring a product covers nesting sets and tissue allowance.

Shops and Makers That Sell in Pattern

Independent gift shops, card shops and stationery boutiques buy decorative boxes to sell empty or as part of a gift wrapping service. Candle and soap makers use them to package sets. Florists use small patterned boxes for chocolates and add-ons. Wedding stylists and event planners order them as favour or keepsake boxes, and online gift brands use them inside a plain shipping carton so the pattern is the first thing seen.

Corporate gift suppliers order patterned boxes in company colours for client hampers, and museum and gallery shops print boxes with artwork from their collections, which turns the packaging into part of the souvenir.

Ask for a Printed Swatch of the Pattern First

A pattern that looks right on a screen often prints darker and duller on board, and a floral at 100 per cent on a monitor can be a blur at box scale. Before you commit to a run, send the pattern file with the three box sizes you plan and ask for a printed swatch of one face. It costs little, it settles gloss versus matt, and it shows whether the repeat is too tight for the smallest box.

Decide the signature pattern and the colourways together, since three colourways in one pattern look deliberate where six patterns look messy. Then tell us rigid or folding and the quantity per size. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 for a folding box.

The free proof shows how the pattern wraps every face, including the corners and the lid edge where the repeat has to meet. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the boxes reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Shops that want a lid you can see through usually pair these with our gift boxes with a clear lid for the products that sell on looks.

Decorative Gift Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering decorative gift boxes.

Can you print my own pattern on the boxes?

Yes. Send your pattern as a high-resolution file or vector artwork, and we will show on the proof how it wraps round each face and corner.

How do patterns line up across corners?

We set the pattern on the dieline so it flows round the box. The proof shows corners and lid edges so you can check the joins.

Should I choose rigid or folding boxes?

Rigid boxes feel solid and get kept as keepsakes. Folding boxes ship flat and save space, which suits shops that wrap many gifts.

Can I order a nesting set?

Yes. Each box is usually 20–25 mm smaller than the next on every side so they slide inside each other neatly.

Can the inside of the lid have a different design?

Inside lid print is popular. A plain outer with a bright pattern inside makes a nice surprise.

Do you add ribbon ties?

Ribbon ties can be added to rigid boxes. Tell us the colour and width you want when you ask for a quote.

Which finish protects a pattern best on the shop floor?

Matt or soft-touch lamination resists scuffs and fingerprints. Gloss makes colours richer but shows marks more easily.

Can one order of decorative boxes include three different patterns?

Yes. Several patterns can be quoted together in one job, each with its own quantity, and the minimum is set per design. Many shops run one pattern in three colourways rather than three unrelated patterns so the shelf still reads as one range.

Can I get a printed sample before the full run?

Yes, a single printed face or sample box can be quoted before production. It is the best way to check how pattern colours look on board.

What happens if a box is scuffed on arrival?

Let us know within 10 days of delivery and the damaged boxes will be reprinted or refunded. The sound ones stay with you.
