Custom Tall Burger Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom tall burger boxes have high walls and a raised lid for burgers that would be flattened by a standard clamshell: double and triple stacks, towering brioche builds, burgers held together with a skewer and anything loaded with onion rings or pulled meat. Printed with your brand, they let the burger arrive standing as tall as it left the pass.

When Your Burger Outgrows the Clamshell

Gourmet burger bars build upwards. Two smashed patties, a slice of cheese each, bacon, pickles, a fried onion ring and a glossy brioche crown easily reach 120 mm or more, and a standard 75 mm clamshell simply cannot close over that without squashing it. The result is a burger that leans, a lid smeared with sauce and a customer who opens a delivery to find something that looks nothing like the menu photo.

A tall burger box fixes that by giving the stack the height it needs. The walls are raised, the lid sits well above the crown and the base is wide enough for the burger to stand on its own. It costs a little more per box than a standard clamshell, but for a premium burger the difference in presentation is worth far more than the extra pence. Builds with two patties but a modest height may fit our double burger boxes instead.

Tall boxes also help the people doing the packing. A burger that is placed into a high-walled base stays upright while the lid is closed, rather than tipping as a low clamshell is folded shut around it. That small difference saves remakes during a rush and keeps the kitchen moving.

Styles of Tall Burger Box

There are a few ways to build height into a burger box, and each suits a slightly different kitchen. A deep clamshell is the familiar hinged box, just taller, and folds in the same way. A cube box with a top tuck or a lid gives straight sides and a more upmarket look. A gable box with a handle suits burgers sold with sides in one carry pack. Some brands use a tall sleeve that slides over a tray, so the burger is placed in from the side rather than dropped in from above. The sleeve route works well with printed custom burger sleeves over a plain tray.

  • Deep clamshell with hinged lid and front lock
  • Cube box with lid for a premium, straight-sided look
  • Tray and tall sleeve for side-loading stacked burgers
  • Gable box with handle for burger and sides together
  • Vented lids to stop steam softening the bun

Measuring a Loaded Burger

Measure your tallest regular burger, built exactly as it goes out during service, not the photo version. Note the width at the widest point, which is often the cheese or a patty overhang rather than the bun, and the height to the top of the crown or the tip of any skewer. Add around 15 mm to the width and 15 to 20 mm to the height so the lid clears the top easily.

If you serve burgers with a skewer through the middle, ask whether the skewer can be shortened or angled. A long skewer can add 50 mm of height that the box then has to accommodate, and a shorter one may do the job just as well. If you serve a range of builds, size the box for the tallest and accept a little headroom on the simpler ones.

If you sell through delivery apps, think about the bag too. Tall boxes need deeper delivery bags, and a box that is too tall can be laid on its side by a rider to fit. A height around 130 mm usually fits standard insulated bags upright, while anything much taller should be checked with your delivery partners first. Our guide to measuring for a custom box has more on clearances.

Keeping It Hot and Holding Its Shape

A tall box has more air inside, so heat retention and steam management matter. Small vents near the top of the lid let steam escape without dropping the temperature too quickly, keeping the bun soft rather than soggy. A grease-resistant coating on the inside stops oil and sauce soaking into the walls, which would weaken a tall box faster than a short one.

Board choice matters more than usual too. Tall walls flex more than short ones, so we use a slightly heavier board or E-flute corrugated for big builds. Corrugated also insulates better, which helps on longer delivery runs. If you want food-contact grade board, mention it with your enquiry. Our board and finish options page compares folding board with E-flute.

A paper liner or a printed burger wrap inside the tall box adds another layer between the food and the board. It keeps the stack together as it travels and gives the customer something to hold while they eat, which is especially welcome with messy builds.

Branding That Matches a Gourmet Menu

Tall boxes have more wall area than a flat clamshell, which gives you room for strong branding. Wraparound designs that continue across all four sides look great in photos, and the extra height means the logo is visible even when the box sits in a delivery bag with others. Many burger bars use a dark colour such as black, charcoal or deep red with a single bright accent, which looks premium and hides any marks from handling.

The inside of the lid is a fun place for a line of personality, a menu suggestion or a social handle. Kraft board with a one or two colour print suits smokehouses and street food brands. More kraft styles sit across our food and takeaway packaging range.

  • Wraparound design across all four walls
  • Dark base colour with one bright accent
  • Inside lid: a short line or social handle
  • Front panel: space for an order sticker

Who Uses Tall Burger Boxes

Gourmet burger restaurants offering delivery, street food traders with signature stacked burgers, pubs with a premium burger menu, dark kitchens running delivery-only brands and event caterers serving loaded burgers at festivals all use tall boxes. Some fried chicken shops use them for towering chicken burgers too, where a crispy fillet adds a lot of height.

Brands that also sell smaller burgers often order tall boxes for the signature builds and a standard clamshell for the rest, printed in matching artwork so the range looks consistent. The standard sizes in those matching sets are usually our printed burger clamshell boxes.

Tall boxes also make sense for burgers built to be photographed. If your signature burger is the one people post online, a box that keeps it tall and intact is effectively part of your marketing budget.

Tall Burger Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering tall burger boxes.

How tall should a tall burger box be?

Measure your tallest regular burger and add 15 to 20 mm. Most loaded burgers need an inside height between 110 and 150 mm. We size the box to your actual build.

Will a tall box keep the burger warm?

Yes, especially in E-flute corrugated, which insulates better than thin board. Small vents release steam without losing heat too quickly. This keeps the bun soft on delivery.

Can a burger with a skewer fit?

Yes, but measure to the tip of the skewer. A shorter skewer can save a lot of box height. We can size for either.

Is a cube box better than a deep clamshell?

A cube box with straight sides looks more upmarket and holds tall builds very steadily. A deep clamshell is quicker to fold and close during service. Choose by your service speed and brand.

Will grease weaken the tall walls?

Our burger board has a grease-resistant coating on the inside to stop oil soaking in. For very saucy builds, a wrap or liner adds protection. Heavier board keeps tall walls stiff.

Can I print all four sides?

Yes, wraparound print across every wall is popular on tall boxes. It looks great in photos and delivery bags. The proof shows each panel.

Can I order tall and standard burger boxes together?

Yes, in matching artwork for a consistent range. Ordering together can share setup. Both sizes are shown side by side on your proof.

Can I serve burger and fries in one tall box?

A gable box with a handle, or a wider box with a divider, can hold a burger and fries together. It suits meal deals. Tell us the portion size of the sides.

Which colour hides marks best?

Dark colours such as black, charcoal or deep red hide handling marks and look premium. Add a bright accent for the logo. Kraft board also hides marks well.

Are tall burger boxes shipped flat?

Yes, they arrive flat in bundles to save space. Pre-glued versions pop up quickly during service. Ask us about pre-gluing when you request a quote.

Can I trial a tall box on one menu item?

Yes. Minimums are low and set per job, so you can test a tall box on a signature burger first. Once the box is approved, reordering it is quick because the artwork and cutter are already set.
