Custom Bagasse Burger Boxes
Custom bagasse burger boxes are moulded from pressed sugarcane fibre, so they shrug off hot fat and steam without any plastic lining inside. We supply them plain or branded, sized for anything from a smash patty to a stacked double, with a free design proof before anything is printed.

What Bagasse Actually Is, and Why Burger Bars Choose It
Bagasse is the fibrous pulp left once the juice has been pressed out of sugarcane. The fibre is cleaned, mixed into a slurry and pressed into heated moulds, which is why every box has that smooth, slightly matt surface and rounded edges rather than folded corners. There is no glue and no laminated film, just a dense moulded shell with a hinge pressed into the back.
For a takeaway kitchen, the appeal is practical. A burger leaving the pass carries melted cheese, sauce and steam, and a thin card clamshell can go soft at the base within a few minutes. Moulded fibre is thicker and naturally resistant to oil, so the box keeps its shape on the walk to the car or the ride on a delivery bike. Many operators who used to pack in polystyrene foam switch to bagasse because it feels sturdier in the hand and looks more considered on the counter. Kitchens that want full-colour print on the box itself usually choose a card printed burger box in folding board instead.
Heat, Grease and Steam: How the Box Behaves
The thickness of the wall is what does the work. Heat stays in for longer than it does in single-layer card, which matters when a burger has to survive a twenty-minute delivery window. Because the hinge and lid are part of one moulding, there is no seam for sauce to creep through.
Steam is the one thing to plan for. A fully sealed box traps moisture and softens a brioche bun, so most of our moulds have a small gap at the front latch that lets a little vapour escape. If your burgers are particularly wet, such as anything with a fried egg or a lot of slaw, ask us about a box with vent slots moulded into the lid.
Bagasse also copes well in the microwave for reheating at home, and it will sit in a hot-holding cabinet for a short time without warping. It is not designed for the oven, so it is not the right choice for meals that are finished off under a grill after packing. Where steam control matters more than insulation, a vented clamshell burger box with lid vents in card is the usual alternative.

Branding Options for Custom Bagasse Burger Boxes
Moulded fibre does not take full-colour print the way folding board does, so branding works a little differently. There are three routes, and most of our burger customers use one or two of them together. A sheet of printed greaseproof burger wrapping paper under the patty adds branding inside a plain clamshell at very little cost.
- Printed card sleeves or belly bands that wrap around the closed box, printed in full colour on the outside with your logo, menu or social handles
- Round or rectangular stickers on the lid, which double as a tamper seal for delivery orders
- A one-colour logo printed directly onto the lid surface, best for bold marks without fine detail
- A debossed logo pressed into a custom mould, which is a larger investment suited to high-volume chains
Picking a Size That Fits the Burger, Not Just the Bun
Measure the finished burger rather than the raw patty or the bun on its own. Toppings add height, and a tall stack pressed against the lid will smear cheese across the inside of the box before it reaches the customer. As a rule, allow around 10 mm of clearance above the highest point.
Diameter matters too. A standard 100 mm bun with an overhanging patty can be 115 mm wide once it is dressed, and it needs a box with a base of at least 125 mm to sit flat. If you sell a single and a double, it is often cheaper overall to stock two sizes than to put a small burger in an oversized box where it slides around.
Sliders and mini burgers sit happily in the smallest moulds, while meal boxes with a second compartment can hold a burger alongside fries or onion rings. Tell us your menu and we will suggest the smallest box that does the job, which keeps costs and storage space down. For a burger served with chips in one unit, the burger and chip meal boxes have the compartment layout already worked out.
Who Orders Them
Bagasse clamshells tend to be chosen by kitchens where the food is the headline and the packaging needs to keep up. Independent burger restaurants use them for collection and delivery, street food traders like them because they stack well in a small van, and event caterers find the rigid shell easier for guests to eat from while standing.
They also suit cafés and pubs that do one or two burgers alongside a wider menu. Plain boxes with a branded sleeve mean you can keep one stock box for several dishes and change the sleeve when the menu moves on. Most of them also pick fry trays and napkins from the same takeaway packaging for hot food so the order arrives as one delivery.
Making the Switch from Foam or Thin Card
Changing packaging mid-service is where things go wrong, so it pays to plan the changeover. Order a small run of your two most-used sizes first and pack a busy evening with them. Watch how the staff close the latch, whether the boxes stack in your hot pass and how they sit in your delivery bags, which are often cut for the old foam shapes.
Moulded fibre boxes are a touch heavier and less springy than foam, so they need a firm press on the latch rather than a quick snap. A short word with the team before the first shift saves a lot of lids popping open at the counter. Kitchens that run a mix of dine-in and takeaway sometimes keep the bagasse boxes for delivery only, where the extra rigidity earns its keep, and use a lighter card box for collection orders eaten on the spot.
Storage is the other thing to check. Nested bagasse takes up far less shelf room than ready-built boxes but more than flat card, so measure the space under your counter before placing a large first order. If storage is tight, flat-packed card boxes that fold at service are compared with moulded fibre in our guide to choosing a box style.
Order the Box to the Dressed Burger, Not the Bun
The mistake we see most often with bagasse is sizing from the bun. Build your tallest menu burger exactly as it goes to a customer, with sauce and toppings, then measure its height and widest diameter and add 10 mm to each. That gives the mould size to ask for. Decide next how the box will be branded, because a debossed mould and a printed sleeve are quoted very differently: a sleeve means ordering plain clamshells plus a short print run, which is where the free design proof drawn on the sleeve comes in.
Email the burger measurements, the branding route and a rough weekly count. A custom quote arrives within one working day, and once you approve the proof the printed parts are made in 4 to 7 working days and delivered free and tracked to UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 days. Plain bagasse can usually ship sooner. Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a van can trial two sizes before committing. Sleeves or stickers that arrive misprinted or damaged are reprinted or refunded if reported within 10 days.

Bagasse Burger Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering bagasse burger boxes.
Do bagasse burger boxes need a plastic lining to stop grease leaking?
No. Pressed sugarcane fibre is dense and naturally resistant to oil, so the box holds grease without a film or coating inside. Very wet fillings can still mark the surface, but the wall will not go soggy the way thin card does.
Can you print my full-colour logo straight onto the moulded box?
Moulded fibre only takes simple one-colour printing well, so detailed artwork is better on a printed sleeve or lid sticker. We will look at your logo and tell you which route gives the cleanest result.
Will my burger bun go soft inside a closed bagasse clamshell?
A little steam is always trapped, but our latches leave a small gap to let vapour out. For very juicy burgers we can supply a lid with moulded vent slots, which keeps the bun noticeably drier on longer deliveries.
How do I measure for the right bagasse box size?
Build a finished burger with all its toppings and measure the widest point and the full height. Add about 10 mm above the top and 10 mm around the sides, then match that to the nearest size in our range.
Can bagasse boxes go in a hot-holding cabinet?
Yes, for the short holding times most takeaways use. The fibre will not warp at typical holding temperatures, but it is not designed for oven use or for sitting under a heat lamp for long periods.
Is a debossed logo worth it for a small burger business?
Usually not at first. A custom mould is a larger upfront cost that makes sense for high volumes, while sleeves and stickers give you full-colour branding from much smaller runs.
Do you supply matching bagasse trays for fries and sides?
We can, and many customers order a fry tray or side pot in the same fibre so the whole order looks consistent. Mention your sides when you ask for a custom quote and we will include them.
How are plain bagasse boxes and printed sleeves delivered?
The boxes arrive nested in cartons and the sleeves come flat in packs, both by free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses within 2–3 working days of dispatch. Printed items are made in 4–7 working days after you approve your proof.
Can customers reheat a burger in the box?
Bagasse can go in a domestic microwave for reheating, which customers appreciate with delivery orders. Remove any sleeve or sticker with metallic foil first, and it should never go in a conventional oven.
What happens if my printed sleeves arrive with a misprint?
Let us know within 10 days with a photo and we will reprint them or refund you. Checking your free proof carefully before approval is the best way to catch artwork issues early.
Is food-contact grade material available for the printed parts?
Food-contact grade board is available on request for sleeves and inserts that may touch food. Most sleeves sit on the outside of the box, so standard board is fine for those.
