When a Gourmet Burger Needs a Gourmet Box

Upmarket burger restaurants put real effort into their food: aged beef, brioche from a local baker, house pickles, sauces made in-house. Then the takeaway order goes out in the same plain white or kraft burger box as the chain down the road, and much of that effort disappears the moment the customer opens the lid at home.

A black box changes that first impression. It looks deliberate and premium, it frames a golden brioche bun and melted cheese beautifully, and it photographs well for customers sharing their meal online. For restaurants that rely on delivery apps, where the box is the only part of the experience the customer actually sees, that matters a great deal.

Black also suits evening dining, bar menus and late-night service, where the brand already leans darker and moodier.

Think about what happens on a delivery app as well. Customers scroll through photos of other people's orders, and a black box with a bold logo is instantly recognisable in a small thumbnail. Over time that recognition builds into repeat orders, because people remember the burger that came in the black box.

Construction of a Black Clamshell

The box is a one-piece clamshell of the usual burger pattern, cut from black card or from white card printed black on the outside. The base and lid are joined by a hinge at the back, and front locking tabs keep the lid shut during delivery. It folds from flat in a few seconds and opens flat on a table so the burger can be eaten from it.

Black-through board has colour in the paper itself, so edges and folds stay black. Printed black board shows a thin white line at cut edges, which some restaurants like as a detail and others prefer to avoid. The inside can be left white, printed black, or printed in a brand colour as a surprise when the lid opens.

Vent holes in the lid let steam escape and stop the bun going soft during a long delivery.

Sizes for Signature Burgers

Gourmet burgers tend to be taller than fast food burgers, with thick patties, several layers and buns that rise well above the filling. Measure a finished burger from the plate, including any skewer holding it together, as you would for any tall burger box, and add 10 to 15 mm of height so the lid does not crush the top.

A standard gourmet burger fits a box around 115 x 115 x 90 mm. Double patties and towering specials need 125 to 135 mm square and 100 mm or more of height. Some restaurants also order a smaller black box for sliders or a children's menu, so the whole takeaway range looks consistent.

If you sell burgers with sides in one box, a rectangular black meal box with a divider keeps fries away from the bun and looks tidy when opened.

Order a few plain black samples before committing to print. Box up a burger, put it in a delivery bag and leave it for fifteen minutes, then open it. You will see straight away whether the height is right, whether the vents are needed and whether the lid stays shut.

Logos and Print on Black Card

White ink is the most popular choice, giving a strong, clean logo that reads from across a counter. Gold foil looks luxurious and suits restaurants with a premium or cocktail bar feel; our comparison of print and finish options shows how foil and white ink differ on dark board. Silver foil and spot gloss give a more contemporary look. A single colour brand logo, such as red or orange, can be printed on black with a white base layer underneath to keep it bright.

Keep the lid simple: a centred logo and perhaps a short line underneath. The sides are a good place for a website, social handle or a short slogan. Printing on the inside of the lid, such as enjoy or a thank-you message, gives customers something to read when they open the box.

Matt varnish is the usual finish and keeps black looking rich. Gloss can show fingerprints on dark surfaces.

Grease, Heat and Food Contact

Burgers release fat and steam, and both can mark board over time. A grease-resistant board or an inner coating keeps the inside clean and stops oil spotting the outside, and a sheet of printed burger wrapping paper under the bun adds a second barrier. For very juicy burgers, a sheet of branded greaseproof paper under the bun is an inexpensive extra layer of protection and adds another branded touch.

Where burgers sit straight on the card, ask us for food-contact grade board. If the inside of the box is printed, we use inks appropriate for packaging and keep heavy print away from areas where food sits, or leave the base unprinted.

Building a Black Takeaway Range

Once the burger box is black, plain white fries scoops and brown bags can look mismatched. Many restaurants add black fries boxes, black or kraft carrier bags with a white logo, black napkins and branded stickers to seal bags. You do not need everything at once; start with the burger box, which is photographed most, and add the rest over time.

Delivery-only kitchens running several virtual brands sometimes use a plain black box for all of them, with a different sticker on each lid. It keeps stock simple while letting each brand look distinct.

Staff habits help too. Train the team to close each box with the logo facing the same way, place it in the bag lid up and add a sticker or napkin on top. A consistent presentation across every order is what makes a premium box feel premium in practice.

Measure Your Tallest Burger, Then Choose Between White Ink and Foil

Black boxes are unforgiving of a poor fit: a lid that will not quite close shows a white edge of crushed bun, and an oversized box lets a burger slide and smear sauce across the inside print. So build your tallest menu item as it leaves the pass, measure it with the skewer in, add 10 to 15 mm and send that height with the bun diameter. Then decide the print. White ink reads from across a counter; gold foil suits a cocktail bar feel; a bright brand colour needs a white base layer, which we build into the proof.

With those two decisions made, a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, boxes from £0.25 each depending on size and finish, with minimums quoted per job. The free design proof shows the clamshell flat with vents and locking tabs marked. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after you sign off and the flat cartons reach UK mainland kitchens on free tracked delivery in 2 to 3 working days. If a double stack is on the menu, ask us to quote the deeper double burger box in black in the same run.

Black Burger Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering black burger boxes.

Is the card black all the way through?

Black-through card keeps edges and folds black. White card printed black is also available and lets you print a colour inside the box.

Which logo colour works best on a black burger box?

White ink gives the strongest contrast. Gold foil suits premium brands, and bright brand colours can be printed over a white base.

Will a tall gourmet burger fit?

Measure your finished burger and add 10 to 15 mm of height. Tall burgers usually need a box at least 100 mm high.

Do black boxes show grease marks?

Grease-resistant board or an inner coating keeps oil from spotting through. A greaseproof liner adds further protection.

Can a message be printed inside the lid of a black clamshell?

Yes. On black-through card the inside lid prints in white ink or foil; on white card printed black outside, the inside can carry a full colour pattern or a short line of text. Either way the customer sees it the moment the lid lifts.

Should I add vents to the box?

For delivery, yes. Vents let steam escape so buns stay firmer during the journey.

Can one black box serve several virtual brands?

Yes. A plain black box with a different sticker on each lid lets several brands share stock while looking distinct.

Does gloss or matt look better on black?

Matt keeps black looking rich and hides fingerprints. Gloss shows marks more readily on dark board.

Can I get matching fries boxes?

Yes. Black fries boxes, bags and napkins can be ordered to match, either together or later.

When will printed black boxes arrive after I approve the proof?

Allow 4 to 7 working days for the run itself, plus 2 to 3 working days for the free tracked courier to reach you. Order the next batch when you open the last carton so the kitchen never runs short.
