The Box Built Around the Burger

The clamshell is the shape most people picture when they think of a takeaway burger, and for good reason. It opens like a book, so staff can drop a burger in, flip the lid over and lock it in one movement. The hinge keeps the lid attached, so nothing gets lost on the pass. Once closed, the locking tab holds firm in a delivery bag, and when the customer opens it, the lid folds back to become a small plate for the burger or a tray for the fries.

A good clamshell also manages heat and moisture. A burger fresh off the grill releases steam, and if that steam has nowhere to go, it softens the bun within minutes. Clamshells can be made with small vents in the lid or sides that let steam out while keeping the heat in, so the bun stays soft but not soggy.

Clamshells also suit the rhythm of a busy kitchen. During a rush, the person on the pass should never have to think about packaging. A stack of flat clamshells that open with a flick, take a burger and close with one press keeps the line moving. Compare that with a two-part box, where the lid has to be found and lined up, or a wrap that has to be folded around the burger by hand, and the time saved over a long service adds up quickly. Restaurants that prefer a lid that lifts off entirely use our burger boxes with separate lids.

Clamshell Sizes for Every Burger

Burger sizes have grown in recent years, and a box that fits a classic single will crush a towering double with bacon and onion rings. The key measurement is not just the diameter of the bun but the height of the finished burger with its toppings and a skewer if you use one. Measure your tallest build and your widest bun and send us both.

Most burger bars need two or three sizes: one for sliders and kids' burgers, one for standard singles and one for doubles and specials. Some also use a larger clamshell that holds a burger and fries side by side, which saves a separate fries box on combo orders. Stacked builds need the extra height of our taller boxes for double burgers.

  • Slider clamshell for mini burgers and kids' meals
  • Standard clamshell for single burgers
  • Tall clamshell for doubles, stacks and skewered burgers
  • Combo clamshell with room for fries beside the burger
  • Wide clamshell for burgers on brioche or ciabatta buns

Board, Grease and Food Contact

Burgers are greasy, saucy and hot, so clamshells are made from folding board with a grease-resistant coating on the inside. This stops oil from soaking into the board, keeps the outside print clean and helps the box stay rigid until the last bite. Food-contact grade board is available on request. Kraft-look board gives a natural, gourmet burger feel, while white board shows bold brand colours brightly.

Heavier boards are worth considering for big burgers, because the weight of a stacked double can make a thin box sag when lifted from one side. If you serve burgers with plenty of sauce, ask for a deeper base so sauce stays in the box rather than running onto the hinge.

If the burger goes out with a pot of sauce or a pickle on the side, decide where that will sit. A small fold-up wall in the base can create a corner for a sauce pot, keeping it upright and away from the bun. The grades we use are described in board grades explained for food boxes.

Locks, Vents and Practical Details

Clamshell locks come in a few forms. A simple tuck tab slots into the front of the base and is quick to close and open. A double lock with two tabs holds tighter for delivery bags that are thrown around on a bike. A tear-off lock shows the box has not been opened since it left the kitchen, which reassures delivery customers.

Vents are small cut-outs or perforations in the lid or sides. They let steam escape so buns do not go soggy, which matters most for delivery orders that might be in the bag for twenty minutes. If you mostly serve customers eating in, vents are less important, but they do no harm. Sides that do not need a lid go in open paper boats for sides.

Printing Custom Burger Clamshell Boxes

The lid of a clamshell is the main canvas. It is the first thing a customer sees when the bag is opened, and it faces up on the table while they eat. Put your logo and name there, large and clear. The sides and front can carry a pattern, your social media handle or a short line about your beef, your buns or your sauces.

Printing inside the lid is a nice touch, because it becomes visible when the box is opened and folded back. A short message, a pattern or a bit of humour adds personality. Full colour printing suits bold, modern burger brands, while one or two colours on kraft gives a classic look at lower cost.

Clamshells for Delivery Kitchens

Delivery-only kitchens and burger brands on delivery apps rely on packaging more than anyone. Their customers never see the restaurant, so the box carries the whole brand. A well printed, sturdy clamshell that arrives warm, intact and properly closed is the difference between a repeat order and a poor rating. Consider combining clamshells with a printed carrier bag, branded stickers and napkins so every order feels complete.

If you run several virtual brands from one kitchen, ask about printing several designs in one order, or using a plain clamshell with a brand-specific sticker. This keeps stock manageable while each brand still looks distinct. Kitchens that want a moulded fibre option can compare our bagasse clamshells for delivery.

Measure the Burger as It Leaves the Pass

Clamshell sizing goes wrong when the box is measured against the bun alone. Build your biggest burger as it is served, with toppings and sauce, and measure its height and width then; that number, plus 10 mm on each side, is the internal size you need. Choose the lock before the print, because a tear-off lock for delivery and a plain tab for eat-in use different dielines. Vents are decided by the journey: a 15-minute delivery in a bag needs more venting than a tray carried to a table. Artwork is a logo and a couple of flat colours on kraft or white board, and we show it on the open dieline so you can see where the fold crosses the lid. Expect a custom quote by email within one working day, a free proof, then 4 to 7 working days of production after you sign it off, with free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses. Sides sold with the burger can match the box using our fries cups in matching print.

Burger Clamshell Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering burger clamshell boxes.

How do I choose the right clamshell size?

Measure your widest bun and the height of your tallest burger with toppings. Most burger bars need two or three sizes to cover sliders, singles and doubles.

Will the bun go soggy in the box?

Steam vents in the lid or sides let moisture escape while the burger stays warm, which keeps the bun soft rather than wet. For delivery, a box with side vents and a lid gap works better than a sealed one. We position the vents away from the printed panels.

Can the clamshell hold fries as well?

Yes. A combo clamshell is wide enough for a burger and fries side by side, which saves a separate fries box.

Which lock is best for delivery?

A double lock holds tighter in a delivery bag than a single tab. A tear-off lock shows the customer the box has not been opened since it left the kitchen. Eat-in orders can use a simple tab lock that re-closes.

Will grease show through the printed box?

Our clamshells have a grease-resistant coating on the inside that keeps oil away from the outside print. It also helps the base stay rigid under a hot burger. Heavily sauced burgers can still mark the inside, which the coating is there to contain.

Can the inside of a clamshell lid carry a menu or message?

Yes, the inside of the lid is visible the moment the box is opened, so a short message, a menu line or a QR code sits well there. It is printed in the same pass as the outside. Keep it simple, because the lid is often folded back against a table.

Can I order several brand designs for different menus?

Yes. We can print several designs in one order, or supply a plain clamshell for brand-specific stickers.

How fast does a clamshell fold up on the pass?

The boxes arrive flat and fold into shape in a few seconds, with the lock tab clicking shut by hand. Flat stacks take up little room under the pass. Most kitchens fold a batch during a quiet spell rather than per order.

Does the board touch the bun directly, and is that a problem?

The bun sits on the inside face of the board, so we supply food-contact grade board on request for clamshells. Tell us the box is for direct food contact when you ask for the quote and it is specified from the start. The grease-resistant coating sits on the same face.

Can I get a new size added to my existing order design?

Yes. We adapt your current artwork to the new size and send a free proof. This is handy when you add a new burger to the menu that needs a taller or wider box.

How much do printed burger clamshells cost?

Prices start from £0.25 each depending on size, board, print and quantity. We send a custom quote by email within one working day.
