Custom burger and chip boxes give a combo meal one home: a wide clamshell or tray with room for the burger on one side and a full portion of chips on the other. Printed with your branding, they make meal deals faster to pack and stop chips going cold in a separate bag.

One Box for the Whole Meal

Most takeaways sell more combos than single burgers, yet many still pack them in two containers: a burger box and a chip bag or scoop. That means two items to grab, two items to close and two items that can slide apart in a delivery bag. A combo box puts both in one place, so the order is boxed in a single movement and the customer opens one lid to find the whole meal.

It also helps the food. Chips sealed in a small paper bag sweat and go limp within minutes. In a wider box they spread out, steam has somewhere to go and they arrive with more of their crunch. The burger sits on its own side so the bun does not soak up moisture from the chips.

For delivery-heavy kitchens, fewer containers per order also means fewer items for the driver to juggle and fewer complaints about missing sides, since everything is packed and closed together. p2 Takeaways that still sell chips on their own usually keep a stock of open paper boats for chips beside the combo boxes.

Sizing Burger and Chip Boxes Around Your Portions

The right size starts with your largest burger and your standard chip portion. Measure the burger across the widest point of the bun and from the base to the top of the bun with fillings in place. Then weigh or measure a regular portion of chips. We use those numbers to set the box footprint and the lid height so the lid closes without squashing the stack.

Most combo boxes are rectangular, roughly twice as wide as a single burger box. Some kitchens add a low card divider down the middle so the chips cannot roll under the burger. Others prefer an open base so the meal can be arranged freely for loaded fries or a side of onion rings.

If you sell a kids' meal too, a smaller version of the same box keeps the look consistent while matching a smaller portion, which also helps control food cost.

A quick way to test sizing is to pack a real meal into a sample box during service and leave it for ten minutes. If the lid has lifted or the chips have pushed the burger off-centre, the footprint needs adjusting before the full run is printed.

Clamshell, Tray or Lidded Box

The clamshell is the most common style. It folds from one sheet, locks with a front tab and opens like a book, so the customer can eat straight from it. A tray with a separate lid suits sit-in service and food markets where the lid is removed and the tray becomes a plate. Lidded boxes with tuck flaps hold heat a little better and stack more firmly in delivery bags.

Vent holes in the lid let steam escape so chips stay crisp. We position them away from the logo and away from where sauces might drip through. A small thumb notch on the front tab makes the box easier to open without tearing the board.

For burger vans with very little storage, a clamshell that folds in seconds and stacks flat is usually the most practical, because a tall pile of flat blanks takes up far less space than pre-formed trays. p2 Our clamshell boxes for single burgers page shows how the locking tab works.

Board and Grease Resistance

A burger and a portion of chips carry a lot of oil and sauce. We use a firm folding board or a thin corrugated board, depending on how heavy the meal is and how far it travels. Corrugated board holds heat better and stays rigid for delivery; folding board prints sharper and costs less for counter service.

A grease-resistant coating on the inside face stops oil from soaking through to the printed outside. Without it, a box that looks crisp at the pass can show dark patches by the time it reaches a customer's door. Food-contact grade board is available on request, and we can advise on coatings for very hot or saucy menus.

Kraft board is popular with burger joints that like a natural, rugged look. White board shows bright colours and photography, which suits chains and franchise menus that rely on strong brand colours.

Print That Works in a Delivery Bag

A delivery box is seen first by the customer when the bag is opened, then by everyone else at the table. A bold logo on the lid and a simple pattern round the sides is enough to make the meal recognisable. A short line inside the lid, such as an order-again prompt or a social handle, is read while people eat.

Keep important information off the fold lines, where creasing can break up text. One or two colour printing on kraft keeps costs low for high-volume takeaways. Full colour is worth it when the box carries photography or a detailed illustration.

Think about how the box looks when opened on a table, too. Diners often photograph a good burger before eating it, and a clean inside print or a coloured base frames the food rather than distracting from it. A plain inside with a single small logo near the hinge usually photographs best. p2 Burger bars with a stacked double on the menu often pair these with taller boxes for double burgers.

Who Uses Combo Boxes

Independent burger bars, chip shops adding a burger menu, food trucks, pub kitchens offering takeaway and dark kitchens serving delivery apps all order this style. Event caterers use them at festivals and sports grounds, where a single box per meal keeps queues moving and reduces litter around the stand.

Chicken shops and kebab houses also use the same box for a fillet burger and fries or a wrap and chips, so one stock item covers several menu lines.

Schools and leisure centres running cafés use combo boxes for grab-and-go lunches as well. Because the meal is boxed in one item, a single stack of flat blanks beside the fryer covers every order, and staff do not need to keep separate stocks of bags, scoops and clamshells. p2 Festival caterers serving in bulk sometimes use open paper trays for loaded fries for the quicker lines.

Stack Your Tallest Burger and Measure From the Base

The number that decides a combo box is the height of your tallest burger as it is actually served: a double smash with a brioche lid and a pickle on a stick is often 110 mm, and a lid that presses on the bun arrives looking squashed. Build the tallest item on your menu, measure from the board to the top of the bun, add 10 mm, and send that with your chip portion weight.

Choose the board from your delivery mix. Mostly counter and sit-in, folding board with a grease-resistant lining prints sharpest; mostly apps and drivers, thin corrugated keeps the heat in. Tell us weekly box use too, since quantity drives the price more than print does, and a quote arrives by email within one working day from £0.25 per box.

The free proof shows the box flat and folded, so you can check the vents sit clear of the logo. Production is 4 to 7 working days after approval and the flat boxes come free and tracked to UK mainland addresses. Kitchens with a chicken line often order chicken boxes in the same board so one stock of blanks covers both menus.

Burger and Chip Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering burger and chip boxes.

Will the chips stay crisp in a combo box?

They stay crisper than in a sealed bag because they spread out and steam can escape through vent holes in the lid. For long delivery journeys, corrugated board also holds heat better.

Can I have a divider between the burger and the chips?

Yes, we can add a low card divider down the middle of the base. It stops chips sliding under the burger and keeps the bun dry.

What size do I need for a double smash burger and large fries?

Most kitchens find around 250 x 160 x 100 mm works, but stacks vary. Send the height of your tallest burger and we set the lid height so it closes without pressing on the top bun.

Is there room for a sauce pot next to the chips?

Yes. We can cut a round recess into the base or add a corner insert that holds a 30 ml or 60 ml dip pot upright, so it does not tip into the chips. Send the pot diameter and we size the recess to it.

Should I choose folding board or corrugated board?

Folding board suits counter service and prints the sharpest colours. Corrugated board is stiffer and keeps food warmer, so it is better for delivery apps and longer trips.

Will chip grease soak through the printed lid?

Not with a grease-resistant coating on the inside face, which keeps oil in the box rather than in the board. The coating is standard on our combo boxes and costs very little, so the outside print stays clean through the delivery journey.

Can the boxes be stored flat?

Yes, clamshell and tray boxes ship and store flat, then fold into shape in a few seconds. That saves a lot of space in vans and small kitchens.

Can I print a different design for my kids' meal box?

You can order two sizes with different artwork in one job. Many takeaways keep the same brand style but add illustrations or a puzzle on the kids' box.

Is kraft or white board better for a burger brand?

Kraft suits a rustic, grill-house style and keeps one colour print affordable. White board is better for bright brand colours and food photography.

How much do printed burger and chip boxes cost?

Printed food boxes start from £0.25 each, with the final price depending on size, board and quantity. You get a custom quote by email within one working day.

What if part of my order arrives damaged?

Let us know within 10 days of delivery with photos, and we reprint the damaged boxes or refund them. The usable boxes stay with you in the meantime.
