The Steam Problem

Fried chicken comes out of the fryer crisp and leaves the shop in a closed box. Within minutes, steam rising from the hot meat condenses on the inside of the lid and drips back onto the coating, and the crunch that customers paid for turns soft. Anyone who has opened a delivery of chicken that has gone limp knows the problem. The fix is airflow: holes or slots in the box that let steam out without letting heat drain away too quickly.

Vent placement matters. Holes in the lid let the hottest, wettest air escape upwards. Side vents near the top help air move across the food. Too many vents and the chicken cools before it reaches the customer; too few and it steams. We position vents based on your box size and how long your orders usually travel, whether that is a short walk from the counter or a delivery run across town.

Coatings behave differently too. A thick, craggy batter holds its crunch longer than a thin breadcrumb, and Korean-style wings glazed in sauce have a different problem altogether, because the sauce softens the coating anyway and the box mainly needs to stop it pooling. Tell us what you fry and how it is finished, and we will suggest a vent layout that suits your recipe rather than a one-size answer. Burgers from the same fryer share the vent logic of our vented fast food boxes.

Box Shapes for Every Menu Item

Chicken shops serve a mix of items, and each suits a different box. Clamshell boxes with a hinged lid hold a few pieces, a burger and fries, or a wings meal. They are fast to close and stack well in delivery bags. Gable boxes with a carry handle suit larger meals and look great on a counter. Buckets are the classic for sharing portions and family meals, holding pieces upright so steam escapes from the top.

Smaller items such as popcorn chicken, strips or wings can go into open-top cartons or paper boats, often placed inside a larger box for delivery. Matching all of these with the same design gives your shop a consistent look on the counter and on the doorstep. Those open cartons are listed on our paper food boats for strips page.

Grease Resistance and Board Choice

Fried food releases oil, and plain board soaks it up, leaving dark patches on the outside print. Chicken boxes are made from board with a grease-resistant inner coating, which holds oil on the surface long enough for the meal to be eaten. Food-contact grade board is available on request, and it is the right choice whenever chicken sits directly on the board rather than on a liner.

White board shows bright colours clearly and suits bold chicken shop branding. Kraft board gives a rustic, street-food look and hides small oil marks. For buckets, a stiffer board keeps the shape when filled with heavy pieces, and a rolled rim makes them comfortable to hold. The board and coating options page explains the grease-resistant layer.

Sizing Boxes Around Portions

Portion sizes drive box sizes. A box for a few wings needs far less room than one for a burger with fries and a side of coleslaw. Measure your largest portion as it is served, including any sauce pots, and add space for the lid to close without pressing on the food. A box that is too tight squashes coatings; one that is too big lets pieces slide and cool faster.

Most shops settle on three or four sizes: a small box or carton for snacks, a medium clamshell for meals, a large box or gable for combos, and a bucket for sharing. We can help you choose sizes that cover your menu without overlap.

Think about how the kitchen assembles orders as well. If staff build meals in a line, with chicken going in first and fries on top, a box with a slightly deeper base and a lid that sits higher keeps everything in place. If fries go in a separate carton, a shallower clamshell for the chicken is neater and cheaper. Watching your team pack a few orders during service is the quickest way to spot which shape will save them time. Our guide to sizing boxes by portion covers headroom for stacked meals.

Branding That Works on the Street

Chicken boxes are carried down high streets, through bus stations and into offices, and they are photographed for social media. Bold colours, a big logo and a confident pattern make the box recognisable from a distance. Many chicken shops use red, yellow or black, but a distinctive colour can set you apart from the shop next door.

Printing inside the lid adds a surprise for customers and shows up in open-box photos. A short line, a social handle or a loyalty message works well. Keep allergen and nutrition information clear on a dedicated panel or a label, so it does not get lost in the design.

A strong design also helps if you trade from more than one site or from a van at events. Customers who know your box from the high street will recognise it at a festival, and staff can switch between locations using the same stock. Rice and curry sides go in printed food boxes with a lid that match the chicken range.

Delivery Apps and Takeaway Bags

Delivery orders spend longer in transit than walk-in orders, so venting and sealing matter even more. A tamper-evident sticker across the lid reassures customers that their food has not been opened. A box that fits flat in the rider's insulated bag, without tilting, keeps food in place and sauce off the lid.

Matching branded bags, napkins and stickers complete the order. If you supply several delivery platforms, a consistent box design helps customers remember your shop rather than just the app they ordered from. Upload the logo through the free proof request and we will place it on the lid and the inside.

Time a Delivery Before Choosing the Vents

Vents are set to the journey, so the most useful figure you can give us is how long a typical order sits in a box: a two-minute walk from the counter wants fewer holes than a twenty-minute ride across town. Time three deliveries, note the longest, and say what you fry and how it is finished, since glazed wings need a lid that stops sauce pooling rather than more air. Then measure your biggest meal as served, sauce pots included.

Keep the allergen panel clear in the artwork. Send the menu, portion sizes, styles and artwork, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with boxes from £0.25 and low minimums quoted per job. The free proof shows each box flat with the vent positions. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and the flat-packed boxes arrive by free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses in 2–3 working days. Misprinted or damaged boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Shops with a children's menu usually add kids meal boxes with a handle in the same colours.

Fried Chicken Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering fried chicken boxes.

Why do chicken boxes need vents?

Vents let steam escape so it does not condense on the lid and soften the coating. They keep chicken crisper for longer.

How many vents should my box have?

That depends on box size and travel time. Too many cool the food, too few trap steam. We suggest a vent layout for each size.

Will oil show through the box?

Grease-resistant inner coatings hold oil on the surface during the meal. Kraft board also hides small marks well.

Can a bucket have a printed lid?

Yes. Bucket lids can be printed to match the bucket, and vented to let steam out.

What sizes do most chicken shops use?

Typically a snack carton, a meal clamshell, a large box or gable and a sharing bucket. We help you choose sizes that cover your menu.

Is printing on the inside of a chicken box worthwhile?

Yes. Inside lid print shows up in open-box photos and is a fun way to add a message or social handle.

Do you supply tamper-evident stickers?

Yes. Printed tamper-evident stickers seal delivery boxes and reassure customers their order has not been opened.

Can a box hold a sauce pot?

A die-cut holder or a small divider can keep a sauce pot upright and away from the chicken. Tell us the pot diameter so the holder is cut to grip it.

Are boxes suitable for direct food contact?

Board graded for food contact can be specified on request. Mention it in your enquiry and we will specify it.

Can my staff fold boxes quickly during a rush?

Clamshells and cartons fold by hand in seconds. Many shops fold a stack before service so they are ready for the rush.

What if boxes arrive with print faults?

Send us a photo within 10 days if any boxes are misprinted or arrive damaged, and we will reprint or refund them. Open a few from each bundle on arrival so a fault is found before service.
