Why a Kids Meal Box Earns Its Place on the Menu

A plate of nuggets and chips is just food. The same meal in a box with a handle, a character on the side and a puzzle on the back becomes part of the visit, and that is usually what parents remember when they choose where to eat next. For restaurants with a family trade, the box is one of the cheapest ways to make a children's menu feel looked after.

It also solves practical problems. A closed box keeps food warm on the walk from counter to table, stops chips sliding onto the floor, and gives a child something sturdy to hold. For takeaway and drive-through orders it keeps a small meal separate from the adult food in the bag, so nothing gets squashed or mixed up.

Party caterers use the same format for a different reason. When thirty children sit down at once, a pre-packed box per child is faster to hand out than plating, easier to label for allergies and simpler to clear away afterwards. Family restaurants usually match the box to their adult burger and chip boxes so every order in the bag looks the same.

Box Shapes That Work for Children's Meals

Most kids meal boxes are built as a gable or house shape: a flat base, angled roof panels and a handle formed where the two halves meet at the top. The handle locks the box shut without glue or tape, and the shape stands upright on a table without tipping. It is the format most people picture, and it suits a burger, a wrap or a portion of nuggets with fries.

A flatter clamshell with a fold-out handle works better for pizza slices, flatbreads and anything that would be crushed by a steep roof. Some operators prefer a tray-and-lid style with a separate carry strap, which lets the lid be printed as an activity sheet that children can tear off and keep.

Whichever shape you choose, think about what goes inside before you fix the size. A drink carton tucked into the box needs extra height, while a pot of fruit or a yoghurt changes the footprint. Telling us the exact contents means the proof shows a box that fits the meal rather than a guess. For picnics and school trips, paper lunch bags for picnics are the lighter alternative.

  • Gable handle box: the classic shape, easy to carry, stands well
  • Clamshell with handle: lower profile for slices and flat items
  • Tray and lid: lid doubles as a tear-off activity panel
  • Box with internal divider: keeps a dessert apart from hot food

Board, Coatings and Food Contact

Kids meal boxes are normally made from solid white folding boxboard, which gives a clean surface for bright artwork and folds crisply at the handle. For heavier or greasier meals, a board with a grease-resistant coating on the inside stops oil spotting through to the printed outer face, which matters when the box is supposed to look cheerful at the table.

Food-contact grade board is available on request, and we will tell you on the quote which board and inner coating suit your menu. If the food goes in hot and wet, such as pasta in sauce, we usually suggest a lined pot inside the box rather than putting the food straight onto board.

Kraft board is another option where the brand leans towards a natural look. The print is a little less vivid on brown board, so bold shapes and strong outlines tend to work better than detailed illustrations.

Designing Artwork Children Will Notice

The best kids meal boxes give a child something to do. Mazes, spot-the-difference panels, colouring outlines and simple jokes all work, and they keep a table quiet for those few minutes while the adults finish their food. Put the activity on the side panels or the back, where it can be seen while the box sits open.

Keep your logo and restaurant name clear on at least one panel so the box still works as branding when it leaves the building. Large, flat areas of colour print reliably and look bold from a distance, which suits a younger audience far better than fine text or small type.

If you plan to change the activities through the year, we can keep the box structure the same and swap only the artwork on reorders. That way the cutting forme is already made and each new design only needs a fresh proof. Characters and bright colours reproduce best as full colour print for characters on white board.

Sizing a Box Around the Meal

Start with the largest item and the total volume of food. A typical children's portion of burger and fries fits comfortably in a gable box with a base around 150 x 100 mm, while a meal with a drink carton needs a taller body. Pizza slices and wraps prefer a wider, flatter footprint.

Leave some headroom under the roof so the handle closes easily when the box is full. Staff often fill these quickly during a busy service, and a box that is too snug slows them down and tears at the handle. If you are unsure, send us the menu and the containers you already use and we will suggest dimensions on the custom quote.

It is also worth checking how the boxes travel once they are full. If they go into a takeaway bag alongside adult meals, a slightly lower roof stops them leaning against other cartons. If they are carried by hand around a soft play centre or a party hall, a firm handle and a flat base matter more than saving a few millimetres. For events where boxes are packed in advance and stacked on trays, square footprints line up neatly and are less likely to slide off when the tray is moved.

Finally, measure any extras you plan to include, such as a small toy, a sticker sheet or a packet of crayons. These often end up squeezed in at the last minute, and a box sized only for the food leaves no room for them. Our guide on how to measure a packed meal covers drinks cartons and toys.

Pack a Real Meal in a Paper Mock-Up Before You Choose the Size

Kids' meal boxes are sized from the meal, not from a chart, and the meal varies more than people expect once a drink carton and a toy are added. Fold a paper mock-up of the box you have in mind, pack a real burger, fries portion, drink and toy into it, and see whether the handle still closes. That tells us the length, width and height to the shoulder, and whether a divider is needed to keep fries away from the burger. Then decide on the board: a stiff folding board with a grease-resistant inside for fried food, and food-contact grade on request if food touches the box directly. Restaurants with an adult menu often match the box to their burger and chip boxes for adults so the bag looks consistent.

Send the menu, the number of boxes and any artwork, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day. The free proof shows the artwork with the handle and any activity panel. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, boxes arrive flat by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, and crushed or misprinted boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.

Kids Meal Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering kids meal boxes.

Can the handle hold a full meal without tearing?

Yes, as long as the board weight matches the contents. For a standard burger and fries we use a stiffer boxboard at the handle, and for heavier meals with a drink we step the board up again. Tell us what goes in and we will specify it on the custom quote.

Can you print activities on the inside of the box?

We can print inside as well as outside. Inside print is popular for mazes or a hidden message that appears once the meal is eaten. It adds a little to the cost, which we show separately on the quote.

Will grease show through the printed outside?

Plain board can mark with oily food, so for chips, nuggets and fried chicken we suggest a grease-resistant inner coating. It keeps the outside looking clean for the whole meal.

Can nuggets and fries go straight into a kids' meal box without a wrapper?

Yes, if you ask for food-contact grade board when you request your quote, and we specify it with a grease-resistant inside. Many restaurants still wrap the burger so sauce stays off the activity panel.

Can I order different designs on the same box size?

Yes. Many restaurants run two or three artwork versions on one structure so children can collect them. Each design gets its own proof, and we quote the split quantities together.

Do gable kids' meal boxes arrive flat or ready to fill?

They arrive flat to save space in a small kitchen. Gable handle boxes fold up in a few seconds with no glue, and staff usually make up a stack before each service.

How small can my first order be?

Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a single café or a one-off birthday event can order a modest run. Send the quantity you need and we will price it.

Can you add a space to write a child's name or allergy note?

We can print a blank panel on the side for names or allergy details. Party caterers find it saves confusion when boxes are handed out at the table.

How soon can boxes reach me for a party date?

Production takes 4–7 working days after you approve the proof, and free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2–3 working days. Order with your event date in mind and tell us when you ask for the quote.

What if some boxes arrive crushed or misprinted?

Report it within 10 days with a photo and we will reprint the affected boxes or refund you. We pack flat bundles in sturdy outer cartons to reduce transit damage.

Can I use kraft board and still have bright artwork?

Kraft gives a softer, earthier look because the brown shows through the inks. Bold shapes and strong outlines work well on it, but for vivid primary colours white board is the better choice.
