Custom Frozen Pizza Boxes
A frozen pizza box spends its life in a freezer, gets frosted, handled with cold hands and then read at an oven door, so it has to be tougher and clearer than a takeaway box. Our custom frozen pizza boxes are made from freezer-grade board and printed with your branding and cooking instructions for retail freezer cabinets.

How Frozen Pizza Boxes Differ From Takeaway Boxes
A takeaway pizza box is made from corrugated board to keep a hot pizza warm for half an hour. A frozen pizza box has a very different job. It needs to survive weeks or months at freezer temperatures, cope with condensation when the freezer door opens, and stay rigid when stacked in a cabinet with other boxes piled on top.
That is why frozen pizza boxes are usually made from a solid folding boxboard with a moisture-resistant coating rather than corrugated board. The flat, smooth surface takes high-quality print, which matters because these boxes compete for attention on a supermarket shelf. The box is also much slimmer than a takeaway box, since a frozen pizza is flat and sealed in film inside.
The construction is usually a tuck end carton or a sleeve with a tray. Both stack flat and fill neatly on a production line or by hand.
Board and Coatings for the Freezer
Freezer-grade board is made to keep its strength at low temperatures and when exposed to moisture, and the board and card types guide explains the coatings. Ordinary board can soften and warp as frost forms and melts, which leads to crushed boxes and blurred print. A coated board, often with a clay or polymer coating on the outside and a moisture barrier on the inside, keeps the box firm and the print sharp.
The inner surface does not usually touch the pizza directly, because the pizza is sealed in film or shrink wrap first. Even so, if your packing process places anything unwrapped against the board, such as a base card, we can supply food-contact grade board on request. A gloss or matt varnish on the outside protects the print from scuffs and frost.

Sizing Frozen Pizza Boxes
Frozen pizzas are usually smaller than takeaway pizzas, and they come in fairly standard diameters. Measure the pizza after it has been wrapped, including any base card, and add a few millimetres all round, following the guide to measuring your product. The depth should allow for the thickest toppings, plus the film and base card, without leaving so much space that the pizza slides around.
Think about how the boxes will be displayed. Many freezer cabinets hold boxes standing on edge, like books on a shelf, so the narrow side panel is often what the shopper sees first. Make sure that panel carries the product name and flavour clearly.
- Personal pizzas around 180 mm: box about 190 x 190 x 30 mm
- Standard pizzas around 230 mm: box about 240 x 240 x 35 mm
- Large pizzas around 280 mm: box about 290 x 290 x 40 mm
- Rectangular or flatbread pizzas: box sized to the base plus clearance
What Has to Go on the Box
Frozen food packaging carries a lot of information, and it needs to be planned from the start. Besides the brand name and product description, you need cooking instructions, storage guidance, an ingredients list with allergens highlighted, nutrition information, net weight, a best before date area, the producer's name and address, and a barcode if you sell through retailers, much as on any frozen food box.
The back panel usually holds the ingredients, nutrition and cooking information. Cooking instructions should be large and easy to read, because people read them standing at an oven. Allergens must be emphasised in the ingredients list, often in bold. Leave a blank area for date and batch codes if you add them on the production line.
We can lay out the panels for you if you send the text. You check every word on the free proof before printing, so the responsibility for content stays with you while we make sure it fits cleanly.
Designing for the Freezer Cabinet
Shoppers look into freezer cabinets through glass doors that often fog up, under bright lighting, from a slight distance. A design that works in that environment uses strong colours, a large, clear product photo and a bold product name. Subtle pastel designs and fine type tend to disappear behind frosty glass.
Photography of the cooked pizza is the most common front panel design, because it shows exactly what the customer is buying. Some artisan brands use illustration instead, which looks different among the many photo-led boxes; the print and finish options compared page shows how varnish protects either. A strong colour coding system helps too: give each flavour its own background colour so a margherita, a pepperoni and a vegetable pizza are easy to tell apart at a glance, even from the far side of the aisle. Shoppers who buy the same pizza every week learn to reach for the colour without reading the label. Whatever you choose, keep the flavour name prominent so shoppers can find their favourite quickly.
A window showing the actual pizza is possible, though frost can cloud it. Most brands rely on photography and keep the box fully printed.
From Farmers' Markets to Retail Freezers
Many frozen pizza brands start small, selling at markets or through local shops, before moving into larger retailers. Low minimums let you order modest runs of each flavour while you build up. When a larger order comes, the same design can be scaled up without changes.
If you supply retailers, check their packaging requirements before you finalise the design. Some have rules about barcode placement, case sizes and labelling. Planning for these early saves reprinting later. It is also worth thinking about how many boxes fit in a case and how many cases fit on a shelf, because buyers often ask. A box a few millimetres smaller can sometimes fit an extra row into a standard case, which makes your product easier to stock. Equally, keeping every flavour in the same box size lets a retailer swap flavours on the shelf without rearranging the cabinet, which they appreciate when reordering.
Outer shipping cases, which hold several retail boxes, can also be printed with your branding and product codes. Ask about these if you are moving into wholesale.
Freeze a Wrapped Pizza and Measure It Cold Before Sizing the Carton
A frozen pizza changes shape between the bench and the cabinet: the film tightens, the base card stiffens and the toppings set higher than they looked. So wrap one, freeze it overnight and measure it cold, diameter and full height, then add a few millimetres all round. Write the panel text next, because cooking instructions, allergens, nutrition and the date code area take more room than the brand does, and the narrow side panel needs the name and flavour since boxes stand on edge in a cabinet. List every flavour so each gets its own version in one order.
Send the pizza sizes, the flavours and the text for each panel with any photography, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, minimums set per job so modest runs of each flavour are fine. A free design proof follows for every version. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the flat boxes reach UK mainland addresses on free tracked delivery in 2 to 3 working days. Report misprints or damage within 10 days for a reprint or refund. Producers who sell slices as well usually add pizza slice boxes to the same order.

Frozen Pizza Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering frozen pizza boxes.
Why can I not use a takeaway pizza box for frozen pizza?
Takeaway boxes are corrugated board designed for hot pizza and short journeys. They soften in the freezer and do not print as sharply. Frozen pizza boxes use freezer-grade board that stays firm in cold and damp conditions.
Will the print smudge when the box frosts over?
Freezer-grade board with a varnish or laminate keeps print sharp despite frost and condensation. We recommend a protective coating on all frozen pizza boxes.
How do I size the box for my pizza?
Measure the pizza after wrapping, including any base card, and add a few millimetres all round. Allow enough depth for the tallest toppings.
Can you lay out the cooking instructions and ingredients?
Yes. Send us the text and we will lay out the panels. You check every word on the free proof, as the content remains your responsibility.
Can I print four pizza flavours in one order?
Yes. Each flavour gets its own version with its own cooking and ingredient panels, and all are proofed together. Minimums are set per job, so a modest run of each flavour is fine.
Can I leave space for date codes?
Yes. We leave an unprinted or lightly printed area where you can add best before dates and batch codes on your packing line.
Does the pizza touch the board?
Usually not, because frozen pizzas are sealed in film first. If your process differs, ask for food-contact grade board and we will quote on it.
Which panel do shoppers see in a freezer?
Often the narrow side panel, because boxes are frequently stacked on edge. Put the brand and flavour name clearly on that panel as well as the front.
Can you print outer shipping cases too?
Yes. Printed outer cases holding several retail boxes are available, which helps when supplying wholesalers and retailers.
When will my frozen pizza boxes be ready for packing?
Four to seven working days after you approve the proof, followed by free tracked UK mainland delivery in two to three working days. Approve every flavour's proof at once so the whole range arrives together.
