Custom Hot Dog Clamshell Boxes
Custom hot dog clamshell boxes are long, hinged card boxes that hold a loaded hot dog flat, keep the toppings in and close with a simple tab. We print them in your branding with grease-resistant board so they stay firm from the grill to the last bite.

Built for a Loaded Hot Dog
A plain hot dog fits in a napkin. A proper one, piled with fried onions, cheese sauce, jalapeños and a stripe of mustard, does not, and an open printed hot dog tray only gets it as far as the table. As soon as the toppings go on, the food needs a container that holds its shape, catches the drips and can be carried through a crowd without leaving a trail behind it.
The clamshell does this neatly. The base is a shallow tray the length of the roll, and the lid is hinged along the back so it folds over and locks with a tab at the front. Closed, it protects the hot dog on the walk back to a seat. Open, the lid lies flat behind the tray and becomes a handy surface for a napkin, a pot of sauce or the last few chips.
Because the box closes, it also keeps food warm a little longer, which matters at a stadium or festival where the queue is long and the seats are far away.
Board and Grease Resistance
Hot dogs bring oil, sauces and steam, and plain card softens quickly when it meets them. We use a board with a grease-resistant coating on the food side, so oil and sauce do not soak through to the printed outside and the base stays rigid until the food is finished; the board and card types guide explains the coated grades.
White board gives the brightest print and suits bold, colourful street food brands. Kraft board has a natural brown look that pairs well with simple black or one-colour logos and hides the odd mark from handling. Food-contact grade board is available on request, and we recommend it for any box where the food touches the card directly.
For heavy, overloaded dogs, a slightly thicker board keeps the long base from bowing in the middle when it is lifted from one end.
Temperature is the other test. A hot dog straight off the griddle, with steaming onions on top, will warm the board quickly. A good clamshell stays stiff when it is warm and slightly damp, so it can still be held in one hand by a customer who is also carrying a drink.

Sizing Hot Dog Clamshell Boxes
Measure your longest roll once it is filled, not the sausage alone. Brioche rolls and baguette-style rolls vary a lot, and a foot-long dog needs a very different box from a standard frankfurter, so measure the filled roll as the guide to measuring your product describes. Add room for toppings at the sides and a little extra height if you pile them high.
A typical box for a regular hot dog in a soft roll is around 200 mm long. Foot-long dogs and loaded specials often need 250 mm or more. If you serve a side, such as chips or onion rings, a wider clamshell with a divider can hold both, which saves using a second container.
Try your largest serving with a plain sample before ordering a full printed run. It is the quickest way to check that the lid closes without squashing the toppings.
Styles and Useful Extras
Most of our hot dog clamshells follow the same basic shape, but there are a few variations that make life easier in a busy kitchen, and the burger clamshell boxes share most of them:
- Standard clamshell with front tab lock: the everyday choice for vans, kiosks and snack bars.
- Clamshell with vent holes: small cut-outs release steam so crispy onions and toppings stay crisp rather than going soggy.
- Two-compartment clamshell: a divider keeps the hot dog and a side of chips apart.
- Clamshell with a sauce pot cut-out: a round recess in the lid holds a dip pot securely.
- Open-ended tray option: if your customers eat on the spot, a long tray without a lid is quicker to serve and cheaper per unit.
Making the Box Work as Branding
The lid is the panel everyone sees, so put your logo there and keep it big. Street food buyers decide quickly, and a box with a clear name helps people find your stall again or look you up online; the print and finish options compared page shows how a logo prints on kraft against white. A pattern on the sides, such as stripes or a repeated icon, keeps the box lively without much design work.
If you trade at events, consider a short line on the lid inviting people to follow you, so they can find where you are trading next. Stadium caterers often print a club colour scheme, while restaurants use the same look as their menus and signage.
Leave the base inside plain unless you have a strong reason to print it. Food covers it, and plain board avoids any question of ink near the food.
A matching napkin or sticker on the lid can carry a special offer, which is easier to change than the box itself.
Who Orders Hot Dog Clamshells
We supply clamshells to street food vans, burger and hot dog stalls, snack bars, sports grounds, leisure centres, cinemas, theme parks, pubs with outdoor kitchens and event caterers. They are also used for other long foods: bratwurst, corn dogs, loaded fries in a long portion and sub sandwiches, with hot dog bun bags for the plain ones.
Takeaway restaurants that deliver use clamshells because the lid locks shut in a delivery bag, unlike an open tray, and the food arrives looking the way it left the kitchen.
Market traders who move between pitches often keep one box size for everything long and handheld. That keeps stock simple in a small van, where every shelf is needed for buns, sauces and napkins, and it means staff never reach for the wrong box during a rush.
Load a Roll With Every Topping and Measure It at the Pass
A hot dog clamshell is sized from the roll as it is served, not the sausage, so build your most loaded dog at the pass, with the onions piled and the sauce on, and measure its length, width and height. If the menu runs from a standard frankfurter to a foot-long, two sizes printed from the same artwork beat one oversized box that lets the small dog slide. Decide whether the lid needs vents to keep crispy toppings crisp in a delivery bag, a recess for a sauce pot, or a second compartment for chips, because each changes the dieline.
Let us know the roll length, the style and how many boxes a typical week uses, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, minimums low and quoted per job; simple printed food boxes start from £0.25 each. A free proof shows the flat box with fold lines and the lock tab marked. Boxes are ready 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. Vans that serve chips alongside often add printed fries boxes in the same colours.

Hot Dog Clamshell Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering hot dog clamshell boxes.
Will grease soak through the box?
Our clamshells use board with a grease-resistant coating on the food side, so oil and sauce stay inside and the printed outside stays clean for the time the food is eaten. Heavily sauced dogs left in a delivery bag for an hour are the hardest test, so mention delivery when you ask for a quote.
Can the box fit a foot-long hot dog?
Yes, we make longer clamshells for foot-long sausages and subs. Send us the length of your filled roll and we will size the box to suit.
Do toppings go soggy with the lid closed?
Steam can soften crispy toppings. Vent holes in the lid let some of that steam escape, which keeps fried onions and crispy bits crunchier.
Can I serve chips in the same box?
Yes, a wider two-compartment clamshell keeps a hot dog and a portion of chips apart in one container. The divider stops sauce running into the chips and the lid still locks with the front tab.
Can the sausage sit directly on the board?
Food-contact grade board is available on request, and we recommend it whenever food sits directly on the card. Many vans line the box with a printed sheet instead, which keeps the board clean and lets the sheet carry a second logo.
Does the lid lock shut?
Yes, a tab on the front of the lid slots into the base. It holds firmly during carrying and in delivery bags but opens easily.
Can I print on kraft board?
Yes, kraft gives a natural street food look. Colours print darker on brown board, so bold, simple logos in black or a strong colour work best.
Can the clamshell hold a dip pot?
We can add a round recess in the lid that holds a standard sauce pot. Tell us the pot size so the recess fits.
How quickly can I restock before an event?
Once your clamshell proof is approved, printing takes 4 to 7 working days and free tracked UK mainland delivery takes another 2 to 3. Reorders of an approved design move faster through proofing.
How much do hot dog clamshells cost?
Simple printed food boxes start from £0.25 each, with clamshells priced on size and print. We email a custom quote within one working day.
What if boxes are crushed in delivery?
Tell us within 10 days with a photo and we reprint or refund the damaged boxes. Flat clamshells travel in outer cases, so check the cases at the edge of the stack first, where crushing usually shows.
