Custom Hot Dog Boxes
Custom hot dog boxes stop a loaded frankfurter from shedding onions, sauce and cheese on the walk from the hatch to the stands. We print open-end trays for eating straight away and lidded clamshells for takeaway, sized for anything from a classic sausage in a roll to a footlong with all the toppings.

The Trouble with a Napkin and a Roll
A plain hot dog in a napkin works until someone adds fried onions, mustard, ketchup, jalapeños and cheese. Then the roll splits, toppings fall out and the customer is left with sauce on their sleeve. A box that cradles the roll on three sides keeps everything together and gives people somewhere to put it down between bites.
Hot dog boxes also speed up service. At a stadium kiosk or a festival van, staff can line up open boxes on the counter, drop in a roll, add the sausage and toppings, and hand it over without wrapping. The box holds its shape, so even a queue of orders goes out looking the same.
For premium dogs, with a gourmet sausage and carefully built toppings, a box shows the effort. A loaded dog photographed in a branded tray is far more appealing on social media than one in a crumpled napkin. p2 Vans that sell a simpler menu often start with open paper boats for hot dogs.
Open Trays Versus Lidded Clamshells
An open-end tray is a long, shallow box with low sides and open ends, or a raised back and lower front. It is the quickest to fill and the easiest to eat from, so it suits stadiums, fairs and anywhere people eat on the spot.
A lidded clamshell closes over the hot dog completely. It keeps the food warm and protected for takeaway, delivery or carrying back to a seat across a busy concourse. A small vent stops steam softening the roll.
Other useful formats: p2 The closed version with a tuck lid is on our hot dog clamshell boxes page.

Getting the Length and Depth Right
Measure your longest finished hot dog, not just the roll. Sausages often stick out beyond the bun, especially with frankfurters and footlongs. Add 10 to 15 mm to the length so the ends are not squashed against the box walls.
Depth depends on toppings. A plain dog needs a shallow tray, but one with crispy onions piled high needs more height, especially in a clamshell where the lid must close without pressing the toppings flat. Measure a fully loaded dog at its tallest point and add a margin.
For combo trays with fries, decide how big the fries portion is and size the second compartment accordingly. A compartment that is too small means fries spilling over into the hot dog.
Width matters too. A split-top roll sits upright and narrow, while a soft brioche roll spreads once filled. If your tray is too wide, the dog rolls over and toppings slide out; too narrow and the roll is squeezed. A test with your actual roll, filled as you would serve it, settles the question quickly. p3 The guide to measuring a product covers items that overhang.
Board That Copes with Grease and Sauce
Hot dogs bring grease from the sausage and wet sauces from the toppings. A board with a grease-resistant coating keeps the box stiff and prevents oil marks from showing through on the outside. Without it, a box can soften and sag within minutes.
White board gives the brightest colours for bold street food branding. Kraft board looks rustic and hides grease better, which suits barbecue-style and gourmet sausage brands. Food-contact grade board is available on request for boxes where food sits directly on the card.
For deliveries or longer journeys, a corrugated clamshell in thin flute keeps heat in longer and stands up to being stacked in a delivery bag. p2 Board grades for hot food are compared in the guide to board and card types.
Printing for Food Vans and Kiosks
Hot dog boxes are seen from all angles: from above as they are handed over, from the side as people walk through a crowd, and close up when photographed. A bold logo on the outer side walls and a pattern on the inner base work well. The base is often covered by food, so do not put key information there.
One or two strong colours make a stall instantly recognisable, especially at events where many vans are serving at once. Some brands print a small menu or social handle on the end walls, which people read while they wait for a friend to collect their order.
Our free design proof shows the flat box with folds, so you can check which panels will face outwards once assembled.
Night events are worth a thought. Under festoon lights or floodlights, pale pastel designs disappear, while strong reds, yellows and blacks stay readable. If you trade mostly in the evening, test a printed sample under your own van lighting before ordering a large run.
Matching Boxes Across a Menu
Most hot dog sellers also sell fries, loaded fries, burgers or nachos. Using the same design and colours across all your boxes makes the stall look organised and makes your brand more memorable. Order the different sizes together and proof them side by side so the colours match exactly.
A twin tray or a combo tray can save money at stadiums, where groups order several items at once. Carry trays with slots for drinks keep a family order together on the walk back to the seats.
Stadium caterers often need several outlets to look identical across a ground, with the same boxes at every kiosk. Ordering a single design in two or three sizes, with the size printed discreetly on the end wall, helps staff on every counter grab the right box and keeps portion sizes consistent from one stand to the next.
For one-off events such as a sponsored match day or a club anniversary, a short run with a special print can sit alongside your regular boxes without changing the sizes or folding method your team already knows. p3 Bun bags for the plain dog are covered on our hot dog bun bags page.
Build Your Tallest Dog and Measure It Loaded
Hot dog boxes are sized from the finished dog, not the roll, because the sausage sticks out at both ends and the onions pile up on top. Build your biggest seller exactly as you serve it, measure its length with the sausage overhang and its height at the tallest topping, and add 10 to 15 mm to the length. Say which roll you use too: a split-top sits narrow, a brioche spreads once filled, and the tray width follows from that.
Pick open tray or clamshell from where people eat, and tell us if any lines carry a wet sauce, which needs the heavier grease-resistant board. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 for a simple tray, with the minimum set per job so a van can start small.
The free proof shows the box flat and folded with the vent clear of the logo. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the flat boxes reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Stadium caterers who serve fries beside the dog usually add cone holders for fries to the same order so the counter matches.

Hot Dog Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering hot dog boxes.
Should I choose an open tray or a clamshell?
Open trays are best for eating straight away at events. Clamshells suit takeaway and delivery because they keep the food covered and warm.
How long should a footlong box be?
Measure the finished dog including any sausage sticking out of the roll, then add 10 to 15 mm. Most footlong boxes are around 320 mm long.
How do I stop grease soaking through?
Choose board with a grease-resistant coating so sausage fat and sauce stay on the inside. Brown kraft is more forgiving of the odd splash than bright white.
Can a box hold a hot dog and fries together?
Yes, a combo tray has a second compartment for fries, sized to your portion. Weigh a fries portion so the compartment is not too small.
Will the lid crush loaded toppings?
Not if the box is deep enough. Measure a fully loaded dog at its tallest point and we will add a margin for the lid.
Does a clamshell make the roll soggy?
A small vent lets steam escape so the roll stays soft rather than wet. We place it in the lid away from the logo.
Can I match my fries and burger boxes?
Yes, order them together and we will proof the whole set side by side so colours match. One print run keeps the colour identical.
Can hot dog trays be made in food-contact board?
Yes, on request, for trays where the roll sits straight on the card. Most outlets pair it with a grease-resistant coating so sausage fat stays inside the box. Mention it when you send your sizes and it goes on the quote.
Can boxes reach a stadium kiosk before a big match?
Approve the proof as early as you can. Production takes 4 to 7 working days and free tracked delivery to the UK mainland adds 2 to 3 working days.
A bundle of my hot dog boxes arrived crushed. What happens?
Report it within 10 days with photos and we reprint or refund the damaged boxes. The rest of the delivery can go straight into service, so a match day is not held up.
Do the boxes take long to fold?
No, they arrive flat with pre-creased folds and assemble in seconds once your team has done a few. Fold a stack before service starts.
