A Box That Matches the Way You Make Pizza
A wood-fired pizza with a puffy, blistered cornicione is not the same product as a deep-pan delivery pie, and the box should not pretend it is. Italian-style pizzerias tend to care about provenance, flour, tomatoes and slow fermentation, so a plain brown lid with a generic chef cartoon undersells the food the moment the driver hands it over.
Our Italian pizza boxes are built on the classic folding corrugated format, but the print is where the character comes in. Customers ask for tricolore bands, hand-drawn lettering, vintage enamel-sign styling, line drawings of a wood oven, or a simple cream lid with the restaurant name set in a serif face. Whatever direction you take, the box becomes the first thing the customer sees on the kitchen table and the thing they remember when they next order. Delivery-led pizzerias with a thinner crust use the standard printed pizza boxes in square form from the same board.
Printing Italian Pizza Boxes Without Losing the Charm
Most pizzerias print the lid only, which keeps costs sensible and puts the design where it is seen. Single or two-colour flexo print on kraft or white-lined board suits bold, graphic artwork such as a crest, a script logo and a phone number. If your artwork relies on fine shading, a photograph of the oven or many colours, digital or litho-laminated print reproduces it far more faithfully.
Think about where the box will be photographed. Diners often post their pizza from above with the lid open, so printing a short line or a pattern on the inside of the lid is a cheap way to get your name into those pictures. Side panels are useful for a website address, a QR code linking to your menu, or a line about your dough.
Keep text away from fold lines and the front locking tab, where creasing can crack heavy ink. We mark safe areas on the proof so nothing important ends up across a score. The free proof drawn on the lid and inside shows how an illustration sits around the vent holes.
- Lid-only print for crisp branding at a controlled cost
- Inside-lid print for photos taken at the table
- Side panels for menu QR codes, web address or allergens message
- White-lined board when colours need to look bright and true

Getting the Size Right for Neapolitan Bases
Neapolitan pizzas are rarely perfect circles and the crust rises well above the base, so a box that is a snug fit for a factory pizza can squash an airy rim. Measure a few finished pizzas straight out of the oven, take the widest point, and add around 10 to 15 mm on each side. Depth matters too: a 40 to 45 mm deep box gives a tall cornicione room to breathe without leaving the pizza sliding around.
If you sell several sizes, it is worth ordering a matching set with identical artwork so the counter stack looks tidy. Many Italian pizzerias also sell calzone, panuozzo or focaccia, which travel better in a smaller or longer box than a round pizza does. Tell us the full range and we will suggest sizes that cover it with as few different boxes as possible. Pizzerias that serve a round base in a round box go to the round pizza boxes with a hinged lid.
Board, Venting and Keeping the Crust Crisp
Standard E-flute corrugated board is the usual choice for pizza: it is light, stacks well on a delivery bike and insulates without trapping all the steam. For larger bases or for kitchens that stack boxes high in a hot pass, B-flute adds rigidity. Food-contact grade board is available on request, and a greaseproof liner can sit under the pizza if your toppings are oily.
Steam is the enemy of a crisp base. Side vents or small punched holes in the lid let moisture escape so the bottom does not turn soggy on the way. We can add vents to any size, and they can be placed so they do not cut through the artwork. A sheet of greaseproof pizza box liners under the base keeps kraft board clean when the pizza is heavily topped.
Who Orders Italian-Style Pizza Boxes
The most common buyers are independent wood-fired pizzerias that have grown a takeaway trade alongside dining in. Street-food traders running an oven from a van or a market pitch order them too, because a strong printed box is often their only shopfront. Trattorias that sell pizza as one part of a wider menu use them to make takeaway feel like an extension of the restaurant rather than an afterthought.
Delis and Italian grocers that bake pizza al taglio or sell take-and-bake bases use smaller formats, and event caterers with mobile ovens order short runs for weddings and private parties, sometimes with the couple's names printed on a sticker or band.
Designing for a Busy Pass
A box can look beautiful on a proof and still slow a kitchen down. On a Friday night, staff fold boxes in batches, slide pizzas in with a peel and close the lid in one movement, so the format needs to fold quickly and lock firmly. We keep the classic tab-and-slot construction because it is fast for hands that are already busy.
It also helps to leave a clear panel on the lid or side where staff can write the order number or tick a topping box with a marker. Some pizzerias print a small grid of their pizza names, such as margherita, diavola and marinara, with a circle to mark, which cuts down on mix-ups when several orders leave at once. A plain area for a delivery label is worth planning if you use an app-based courier.
Finally, consider stacking. Boxes stacked six or seven high on a warm pass need board that will not bow, which is another reason to step up to B-flute for your largest size. The fold sequence is drawn in our guide to choosing a box style, which is worth sharing with new staff.
Measure the Cornicione Height, Not Just the Diameter
A Neapolitan pizza is sized by its crust more than its width, so the first measurement to send is the height of the cornicione on a pizza straight from the oven, which is often 35 to 40 mm and will smear against a 40 mm lid once the pizza is boxed. Add 10 mm to that for the inside depth. Then measure the diameter of your largest pizza at its widest point, since hand-stretched bases are never round, and add 20 mm. Decide whether calzone and al taglio need their own boxes or a slice box, and say roughly how many boxes a busy Friday uses so the run is sized sensibly. Slices sold at the counter go into the pizza slice boxes for single portions.
Send the lid artwork as a vector, keeping a clear panel for order numbers. Email the sizes, crust height, board, quantity per size and artwork and a custom quote comes back within one working day, followed by a free design proof. Boxes are made in 4 to 7 working days once approved and delivered flat, free and tracked, on the UK mainland in 2 to 3 days. Boxes that arrive crushed or misprinted are reprinted or refunded when reported within 10 days.

Italian Pizza Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering italian pizza boxes.
Can you print an Italian-style design if I only have a logo?
Yes. Send your logo and tell us the mood you want, such as tricolore stripes, a vintage poster look or a simple cream lid. We lay out the artwork around your logo and send a free proof for you to approve or change.
Will a tall Neapolitan crust fit in a standard pizza box?
Often it touches the lid, which crushes the cornicione. We usually recommend a depth of 40 to 45 mm for wood-fired pizzas, and we can go deeper if your dough rises more than most.
Is kraft or white board better for Italian artwork?
Kraft gives a rustic, artisan feel and suits one or two dark ink colours. White-lined board makes reds and greens look truer, so choose it if the tricolore or bright illustrations are central to your design.
Can the inside of the lid be printed as well?
Yes, inside-lid print is popular with pizzerias because customers photograph their pizza with the lid open. A short line, pattern or social handle there gets your name into those photos.
Do Italian pizza boxes come with steam vents?
We can add side vents or punched holes to any size. Letting steam escape keeps the base crisper on the journey, which matters most for thin, soft Neapolitan bases.
Can I order different sizes with the same artwork?
Yes, and it is a good way to keep the counter looking consistent. We scale the artwork for each size and show every version on the proof before printing.
Are the boxes suitable for direct contact with hot pizza?
Food-contact grade board is available on request, and we can also supply greaseproof liners to sit under oily toppings. Let us know when you ask for your custom quote.
How quickly can a new pizzeria get its first boxes?
After you approve the proof, production takes 4 to 7 working days and free tracked delivery to the UK mainland takes 2 to 3 working days. Allow a day for the quote and proof stage as well.
What is the smallest order you will take?
Minimums are low and quoted per job, depending on size and print method. Tell us roughly how many boxes you use each week and we will suggest a sensible first run.
Can you make boxes for calzone or pizza al taglio?
Yes. Calzone travel better in a narrower, deeper box, and Roman-style slices suit a rectangular tray box. We can match the artwork to your round pizza boxes.
What happens if some boxes arrive misprinted?
Report any misprints or damage within 10 days of delivery and we will reprint or refund the affected boxes. Photos of the problem help us sort it quickly.
