The Box Is Your Takeaway's Best Advert

For a pizza takeaway, the box is the one piece of marketing that reaches every single customer. It sits on the table through the meal, gets left on the side afterwards, and is often the reason someone remembers your name when they next order. A plain brown box with a generic print tells them nothing; a box with your logo, phone number, website or app QR code reminds them exactly where to go.

Printed boxes also help on the street. Drivers carrying branded boxes to doors, and boxes left out for collection, are seen by neighbours. For new takeaways in particular, that steady visibility in the local area adds up quickly. And because you buy boxes anyway, adding print is one of the most cost-effective ways to brand the business.

There is a quality signal too. Customers judge food partly by how it arrives. A sturdy, cleanly printed box that keeps the pizza hot and level tells them the kitchen cares about details, while a flimsy box that has bowed in the middle and left cheese stuck to the lid tells the opposite story, however good the dough was. Sides that go out with the pizza can carry the same print on our fries cups in the same print.

Pizza Box Sizes for a Full Menu

Pizza boxes are usually described by the pizza size in inches, even in the UK. Most takeaways stock between three and five sizes. A 7 or 9 inch box covers kids' and personal pizzas, 10 and 12 inch boxes are the core of most menus, and 14, 16 and 18 inch boxes handle family and party sizes. Garlic bread, wedges and sides often go in a smaller 7 or 9 inch box too.

The internal size should be about 10 to 15 mm larger than the pizza so it slides in and out without catching. Standard depth is around 40 mm; deep-pan and stuffed-crust pizzas may need 45 to 50 mm. Before ordering, check your largest pizza pans against the box sizes we suggest, as a pan that bakes slightly larger than its label is a common surprise. The sizes below 10 inch are covered on our small pizza boxes for sides page.

Brown or White Board

Brown kraft corrugated is the classic pizza box and the most economical. It suits one or two-colour print, usually black, red or a dark brand colour, and hides grease marks well. White-lined corrugated gives a cleaner look and makes colours brighter and more accurate, which is worth it if your logo relies on bright colours or a particular shade.

Both are usually E-flute corrugated, which balances strength, insulation and weight. For 16 and 18 inch boxes, which flex more under the weight of a heavily topped pizza, a stronger B-flute board keeps the base rigid when the box is carried by one edge. Food-contact grade board is available on request.

Some takeaways mix the two: brown boxes for everyday sizes, where cost matters most, and white boxes for a premium range or a signature pizza that deserves a bit more presence. The artwork stays the same, so the brand still looks consistent across the counter. Full colour artwork needs the brighter base of our white pizza boxes for full colour.

What to Print on a Takeaway Pizza Box

The lid is the main print area and should carry your logo, phone number and website in large, clear type. Many takeaways add an ordering QR code that links straight to their app or online menu, which is the quickest way to bring a customer back. Short slogans, opening hours and a line about delivery areas are useful extras, but resist the urge to fill every inch.

Side panels are a good place for a social media handle or a loyalty scheme reminder. A small tick-box panel for toppings or order numbers helps the kitchen when several pizzas go out together. Inside-lid print, such as a pattern or a short message, adds a nice surprise when the box is opened.

If you change prices or offers often, avoid printing them on the box. A sticker or a flyer tucked under the lid keeps the box usable for longer. Allergen notes that change with the menu are easier as labels for allergen notes than as print.

Stock, Storage and Busy Nights

Pizza boxes take up space, even flat-packed, so it is worth planning stock carefully. Work out roughly how many of each size you use in a typical week and order a few weeks' worth of your most popular sizes. Slower sizes can be ordered in smaller quantities or less often. Keep boxes dry and off the floor, as damp corrugated board loses strength quickly.

On busy nights, staff often fold a stack of boxes in advance. The standard tab-and-slot design folds in a few seconds without glue, and we keep that construction for speed. Pizza box separators, small plastic tripods placed in the centre, stop the lid sagging onto the cheese on long delivery runs.

Who Orders Printed Pizza Boxes

Independent pizza takeaways are our main customers, alongside kebab and pizza shops, fried chicken shops that sell pizzas, and restaurants with a delivery trade. Pubs that serve pizza from their kitchen order them for takeaway, and food trucks and market traders use them to carry their branding beyond the pitch.

Franchise owners sometimes order local versions with their branch details, and event caterers, schools and sports clubs order short runs for fundraisers and match days.

Dessert pizza and cookie dough shops, which have grown alongside traditional pizzerias, order smaller sizes printed in brighter colours to set their sweet menu apart from the savoury one. Restaurants that want a thinner, kraft Italian style choose our Italian style pizza boxes.

Match the Box Sizes to Your Pizza Screens

Pizza boxes are sized from the screens or stones you bake on, not from the menu. Measure the baked pizza at its widest, which is often a little larger than the screen, and add 20 mm so the crust does not touch the walls and the lid clears the toppings. Most takeaways end up with three sizes, 10, 12 and 14 inch, plus a small box for sides. Tell us those sizes, your rough weekly usage per size so the quote reflects a realistic run, and say if you want brown or white board and how many print colours. Artwork is a logo, a phone number and a web address or QR code, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows it on each size. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, boxes start from £0.25 and minimums are low and quoted per job. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after you approve the proof and boxes ship flat on free tracked UK mainland delivery. A different look for the same oven is our round pizza boxes for a different look.

Pizza Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering pizza boxes.

What sizes should a new takeaway order?

Most takeaways start with 10, 12 and 14 inch boxes and add 7 and 16 inch as needed. Check your pizza pans against our suggested sizes before ordering.

Should I choose brown or white pizza boxes?

Brown kraft is the most economical and hides grease well. White-lined board makes colourful logos look brighter and more accurate.

Where should a reorder QR code go on a pizza box?

On the lid, near the logo, or on the front edge that faces the customer when the box sits on a table. Print it at least 25 mm square so phones read it from a distance. Link it straight to the ordering page rather than the home page.

Can garlic bread and sides go in the same style of box?

Yes, a smaller 7 or 9 inch box with the same artwork works well for garlic bread and sides and keeps the branding consistent. It is quoted as another size in the same job. Side boxes usually run in a higher quantity than large pizza boxes.

Why do large pizzas sag in the box?

Large boxes flex under heavy toppings. A stronger B-flute board and a pizza box separator in the middle help keep the lid off the cheese.

Should prices be printed on the box?

We advise against it. Prices change, and a box with old prices is wasted stock. Use stickers or flyers for offers instead.

How should I store flat pizza boxes?

Keep them dry and off the floor, ideally on a shelf or pallet. Damp corrugated board loses strength quickly.

Can I print a menu inside a pizza box lid?

Yes, a menu, an offer or a short message inside the lid is a low-cost touch customers see when they open the box. It is printed on the same sheet as the outside. Keep it to one colour so it stays legible on brown board.

How much do printed pizza boxes cost?

Prices start from £0.25 per box and depend on size, board, print colours and quantity. Ask for a custom quote by email.

How do I avoid running out while new boxes are made?

Order before your current stock runs low. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after proof approval, plus 2 to 3 working days for free tracked UK mainland delivery.

What if a pallet of pizza boxes arrives crushed?

Photograph the damaged boxes and the pallet wrap and send the photos to us within 10 days of delivery. We reprint or refund the damaged boxes. Flat pizza boxes are packed in bundles, so damage is usually limited to the outer bundles.
