Pizza Box Separators That Keep Toppings Intact

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Pizza box separators are small stands, often a three-legged table shape, placed in the middle of a pizza to hold the box lid up and away from the toppings. Pizzerias use pizza box separators so cheese and sauce arrive on the pizza rather than stuck to the inside of the lid.

The Problem a Separator Solves

A pizza box lid is a large, flat surface held up only at its edges. When the box is warm and steamy, the board softens and the middle of the lid sags, even on a well-made Italian style pizza box. If the box is stacked under others in a delivery bag or tipped slightly on a bike, the lid presses down on the pizza. The result is melted cheese and toppings stuck to the cardboard, and a disappointed customer.

A separator sits in the centre of the pizza and props the lid up. It takes up very little space on the pizza, usually leaving only small marks where its legs stand, and it keeps the lid clear of the toppings for the whole journey.

For large pizzas, deep pan pizzas and loaded toppings, a separator can make the difference between a pizza that looks freshly made and one that looks battered.

Delivery apps make the problem more visible. A customer who opens a box to find half the mozzarella on the lid is likely to complain or ask for a refund, and the photo they share does the restaurant no favours. A separator costs a tiny fraction of the price of a pizza and takes that cause of complaint off the table.

Plastic or Card Separators

Plastic separators are the familiar three-legged tables. They are strong, small and quick to place, and they hold their shape even when the box is warm and damp. They come in standard heights to suit different box depths, and they are light enough that a large bag barely adds anything to a delivery driver's load.

Card separators are an alternative made from folded board, sometimes printed with a logo. They slot together into a small stand or a cross shape. Card separators can carry branding, a message or a small promotion, turning the separator into a little advertisement on top of the pizza.

Some pizzerias use both: plastic separators for everyday delivery and printed card ones for special promotions or premium ranges.

  • Three-legged plastic separators in standard heights
  • Printed card separators that slot together
  • Cross-shaped card stands for large pizzas
  • Plain separators for bulk use

Getting the Height Right for Pizza Box Separators

The separator should be just tall enough to hold the lid clear of the highest toppings. Measure the inside depth of your pizza box and the height of your pizza with its toppings, as the guide to measuring your product describes. The separator should be a few millimetres shorter than the box depth, so the lid closes fully, and taller than the pizza so it touches nothing.

Thin crust pizzas need only a short separator. Deep pan pizzas, stuffed crusts and pizzas with tall toppings such as rocket or burrata need a taller one. If your menu covers several styles, you may need two heights.

Too tall and the lid bulges or will not close; too short and the lid still touches the cheese. Tell us your box depth and pizza styles and we will suggest a height.

Check the height with a real pizza from your oven before ordering in bulk. Ask for a few samples, place them on a busy evening and see whether the lid stays clear after a stacked delivery. It is the quickest way to be sure.

Printing on Card Separators

A printed card separator gives you a small but highly visible space. It is the first thing a customer sees when they open the box, right in the middle of the pizza; the print and finish options compared page shows how one and two colour print looks on card. Use it for your logo, a short thank-you, a social handle, a QR code for reordering or an offer for next time.

Printing is usually in one or two colours using food-contact grade inks, which keeps the cost down and the design clear. Simple, bold artwork works best at this size. Avoid fine text below a few millimetres in height, as it will be hard to read on a small stand that has picked up a little steam.

A rotating message keeps things interesting for regular customers. Some pizzerias print a different joke, a fact about their dough or a weekly offer on each batch of separators, so customers start to look forward to reading them.

Card separators can also be shaped, for example into a small flag or a logo outline, as long as the stand stays stable.

Who Uses Separators

Independent pizzerias, takeaway chains and delivery kitchens use them for delivered pizzas. Restaurants offering takeaway use them for collected orders, often with printed pizza slice trays for the counter. Event caterers use them when pizzas are stacked for transport to a venue.

Any business that stacks pizza boxes during delivery benefits, because the weight of boxes above presses down on the lids below.

Businesses selling other round, topped foods, such as tarts, quiches or large cookies, sometimes use separators too.

Pizzerias that offer half-and-half pizzas, or that send pizzas with a pot of dip on top, also find separators helpful, as the stand gives the lid a firm centre point and stops the dip pot from being pushed into the toppings.

Using Separators With Liners

Separators protect the top of the pizza; liners protect the bottom. A greaseproof liner under the pizza stops oil soaking into the box base, while a separator stops the lid touching the toppings. Using both keeps the box strong and the pizza looking its best.

If you are ordering printed pizza boxes, consider ordering liners and separators at the same time so the whole package works together. We can quote them together.

Place the separator in the centre of the pizza after slicing, so the legs sit on the pizza rather than across a cut, which can make it wobble.

Measure the Gap Between Your Pizza and the Lid, Not the Box

The number that chooses a separator is the gap. Put a finished pizza in your box, close the lid and measure the space between the highest topping and the inside of the lid; the separator should be a few millimetres shorter than the box depth and taller than the pizza, so that gap tells you whether the 35, 40 or 50 mm height is right. Deep pan pizzas want the tall one, thin crust the short one, and a kitchen with both keeps two heights at the pass. Decide whether a plain plastic separator will do or a printed card one that carries a logo or QR code.

Send the box depth, the pizza styles and whether the separators are plain or printed, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, from £0.25 depending on type, print and quantity, minimums worked out per order. For printed card separators a free design proof shows the artwork first. Separators are ready 4 to 7 working days after approval and arrive by free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days. Pizzerias that line the base as well usually add printed pizza box liners to the same order.

Pizza Box Separators Questions

What buyers ask before ordering pizza box separators.

What does a pizza box separator do?

It sits in the middle of the pizza and holds the lid up, so cheese and toppings do not stick to the box. It also stops a stack of boxes on a delivery bike pressing the lid into the top pizza.

How tall should the separator be?

A few millimetres shorter than the box depth and taller than the pizza with toppings. We will suggest a height if you send your box depth.

Can separators be printed?

Card separators can be printed in one or two colours with your logo, message or QR code. Plastic separators are supplied plain.

Are plastic or card separators better?

Plastic is strong and holds its shape when the box is warm. Card can be printed and turns the separator into a small advert.

Will the separator leave marks on the pizza?

It leaves three small marks near the centre, where the slice tips meet, and touches nothing else on the pizza. Placing it after slicing keeps the legs on the tips rather than across a cut.

Do I need separators for thin crust pizza?

They help whenever boxes are stacked or carried on bikes. A shorter separator suits thin crust.

Can I order separators with liners?

Yes, liners protect the base and separators protect the top. We can quote both together.

Where should I place the separator?

In the centre, after slicing, so the legs sit on the pizza and not across a cut. Press it down lightly so it stands straight before the lid closes.

How much do pizza box separators cost?

Prices start from £0.25 depending on type, print and quantity. We price pizza box separators by email within one working day.

Do separators work in deep-dish or tall boxes?

Yes, as long as the height matches. Deep pan and loaded pizzas need the tall 50 mm separator, and the box should be a few millimetres deeper than that so the lid closes flat. Send your box depth and we check the height before quoting.

Can I get two heights for different pizzas?

Yes. A standard height for thin and classic bases and a tall one for deep pan can go on the same custom quote, and the two are easy to tell apart at the pass.
