Custom Food Boxes for Producers and Retail Shelves
Custom food boxes are the printed cartons that carry ready meals, chilled dishes, frozen foods and fresh produce from your kitchen or farm to a shop shelf or a customer's door. We make them in food-contact grade board on request, sized to your trays and portions and printed to sell beside the big brands.

From Producer Kitchen to Shop Shelf
Takeaway boxes such as a printed fast food box are made to be eaten from within minutes. Food producer packaging has a longer life. A ready meal carton may sit in a chiller for days, travel in a delivery van, spend a week in a home freezer and finally go into an oven or microwave. A produce box may be stacked on a farm shop floor and carried home in the rain. The box has to survive all of that while staying attractive and readable.
It also has to carry far more information. Producers selling through shops need product names, ingredients, allergens, nutrition, weight, storage and cooking instructions, best before or use by dates, and their business details. Fitting all of that around a strong design takes planning, and it is one of the main reasons producers come to us rather than buying generic cartons.
The good news is that a well-designed food box does a lot of selling. In a chiller full of similar products, a clear, appetising carton is often what makes a shopper choose yours.
Delivery-led brands face a similar test at the customer's door, where the carton is the first thing anyone sees.
Common Food Box Formats
Food producers usually need one or more of these, and the wider food and takeaway packaging range covers the rest:
- Ready meal sleeves: a printed card sleeve that slides over a sealed tray, carrying the brand and cooking instructions.
- Ready meal cartons: a fully enclosed tuck or crash-lock carton holding a tray, for a more premium shelf presence.
- Frozen food cartons: boxes for pies, pastries, pizzas and frozen desserts, with a board that copes with freezer conditions.
- Produce boxes: open or lidded boxes for fruit, vegetables, eggs and mushrooms, often with ventilation holes.
- Meal kit boxes: larger printed boxes holding several ingredients, recipe cards and sometimes chilled packs.
- Window cartons: any of the above with a film window so customers can see the food.

Board for Chilled, Frozen and Ambient Foods
The right board depends on where the food will be stored. Ambient products, such as dry mixes, biscuits and cereals, are happy in standard folding boxboard. Chilled products face condensation when they move between fridges and room temperature, so a board with a moisture-resistant coating keeps the carton firm and the print sharp.
Frozen foods are the most demanding. Freezer cartons are exposed to frost, damp and handling with cold, wet hands, so they need a board and coating made for those conditions. If the product is cooked in its carton, for example in an oven, the board must be suitable for that use, and you should tell us at the quote stage.
Food-contact grade board is available on request for any food box where the product touches the carton. Where the food sits in a sealed tray, standard board for the outer carton is usually sufficient.
Microwave cooking deserves a special mention. If customers will heat the meal with the sleeve removed, say so clearly on the front and back. If the carton must stay on, it needs to be specified for that use from the start, and any metallic foil or ink must be avoided. These details are easy to settle at the quote stage and awkward to fix after printing.
Packaging Fresh Produce
Fruit and vegetables need air. Produce boxes often have ventilation holes or open sides to let moisture escape and stop condensation rotting the contents. Corrugated board is common for heavier produce such as potatoes, apples and mixed veg boxes, because it stacks well and stays strong when damp.
Smaller premium produce, like berries, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and herbs, can be sold in printed punnet sleeves or small window boxes that show off the colour. Egg boxes and egg sleeves let farms put their name on every half dozen.
Veg box schemes and farm delivery services benefit from a sturdy printed box that customers recognise on the doorstep, sometimes collected and reused on the next delivery.
Fitting Information Around the Design
A food box usually has a front for the brand and product, a back for information and sides for extra messaging. Put the product name and a short, appetising description on the front, along with an image of the food or a strong illustration; the print and finish options compared page shows how photographs print on different boards. Keep cooking instructions, ingredients and nutrition on the back, laid out clearly in a consistent style across your range.
If you change recipes often, consider printing the brand and design on the box and applying an information label at packing. This avoids reprinting the whole box when an ingredient changes.
We can lay out information panels on your free proof, but you are responsible for the accuracy of food information and any legal wording, so please check everything carefully before approval.
Building a Recognisable Range
Most food producers sell more than one product. A consistent design across the range, with a different colour or image per product, makes a strong block on the shelf and helps customers find their favourites, and the same system carries onto frozen food boxes when the range grows. Keep the logo, typography and layout the same and change only what needs to change.
Matching box sizes across the range also helps. If several ready meals use the same tray, one carton size can cover them all, with only the print changing. That makes ordering simpler and lets you take advantage of larger runs.
Window cartons are especially effective for foods that look good, such as layered desserts, colourful salads and handmade pies.
Think about how the range will grow. Leaving room in the design system for a new colour or a sub-range, such as a vegetarian line or a family size, means future products slot in without redesigning everything. Producers who plan this early find it far easier to pitch new lines to stockists, because the new box already looks like it belongs.
Tell Us the Chiller Temperature Before the Box Style
Food producer cartons are specified from the storage conditions, so lead with those. Say whether the product sits in an ambient aisle, a chiller or a freezer, and for how long, because condensation in a chiller and frost in a freezer each call for a different coated board, and an uncoated carton that looks fine on the bench goes soft on the shelf. Then give the tray or portion size with the lid or film fitted, say whether the food touches the board directly, and list every product that needs a box so the range can share one dieline where tray sizes match.
Send those details and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, from £0.25 on simpler cartons, with low minimums quoted per job; a free proof follows once the format is agreed, and we lay out the panels while you check the ingredients, allergens and legal wording. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. Producers who also send meal kits by courier usually add larger catering boxes to the same order.

Food Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering food boxes.
Which board should I use for chilled ready meals?
A board with a moisture-resistant coating keeps the carton firm and the print sharp through condensation in chillers. Tell us the chiller temperature and the shelf life and we specify the grade on the quote.
Can food boxes go in the freezer?
Yes, with freezer-grade board and coatings. Tell us the storage conditions so we specify the right material.
Is a sleeve or a full carton better for ready meals?
A sleeve is cheaper and quick to apply over a sealed tray. A full carton gives more shelf presence and protection.
Do produce boxes need holes?
Ventilation holes help moisture escape and keep produce fresher. We place them so they do not weaken the box.
Can I add a window to show the food?
Yes. Window cartons work well for desserts, salads and pies where the food sells itself.
Who checks the food information on the box?
We lay out the panels, but you are responsible for the accuracy of ingredients, allergens and legal wording. Check the proof carefully.
Can I use one box size for several products?
Yes, if they share a tray size. Change only the print to keep ordering simple.
Can a frozen pie sit directly on the carton base?
We supply food-contact grade board when you ask for it and note it on the quote. Most producers wrap or tray the pie first, which lets freezer-grade board without that specification do the job.
Can I print recipe cards for a meal kit box?
Yes. Recipe cards, inserts and the outer box can be printed together.
We are launching a new chilled range. How should we plan the packaging timeline?
Allow for proof checks first, especially food information. Production then takes 4–7 working days, with free tracked mainland delivery in 2–3 working days.
