Packaging for Produce That Is Still Alive

Vegetables keep breathing after they are picked. They give off moisture and warmth, and if they are boxed too tightly in a sealed carton they sweat, soften and spoil faster. A good vegetable box lets air move around the produce while still protecting it from knocks, which is why corrugated card with ventilation holes is the standard choice for growers.

Corrugated board also absorbs a little moisture without collapsing, and its fluted middle layer cushions roots and tubers when crates are stacked on a van floor. Compared with a plastic crate, a printed box doubles as your shop display and your delivery packaging, carrying the farm name right to the customer's kitchen. Orchards and soft fruit growers use the same thinking on our fruit boxes for the same packhouse.

Box Styles Growers Use

The right style depends on whether the box goes to a shop shelf, a market stall or a customer's door. Most growers end up using two or three styles across their range.

For weekly delivery rounds, a box that folds flat again after use is worth considering. Some schemes collect empty boxes on the next delivery and reuse them while they are in good condition, which keeps costs down.

Market traders often like a box that converts from transport case to display: the top flaps fold back and tuck down inside the walls, raising the produce and turning the printed outer into a ready-made stall front. It saves carrying separate crates and keeps the stall looking tidy and branded from the first customer of the morning to the last. Customers collecting from the gate are given our handled boxes for collection.

Getting the Ventilation Right

Vent holes are a small detail with a big effect on shelf life. Leafy greens, herbs and salad want generous ventilation so moisture can escape. Root vegetables such as carrots, beetroot and parsnips need less airflow and actually keep better if they do not dry out too quickly. Potatoes prefer darkness, so their boxes should have fewer, smaller holes placed low on the sides.

We place vents on the sides and ends rather than the base, so soil and moisture do not escape onto whatever is beneath the box. When boxes are stacked, vents should line up from one box to the next so air can move through the whole stack. Hand holes double as extra vents in larger boxes.

If you pack wet produce straight after washing, let it dry briefly first. Card handles a damp vegetable well but will soften if it sits in standing water for hours.

Temperature matters as much as airflow. Boxes packed in the cool of early morning and kept out of direct sun on the van hold their contents far better than boxes packed at midday. The flute sizes are explained in our corrugated board grades explained guide.

Strength for Stacking and Delivery

A box of potatoes or squash is heavy, and a delivery van stacks several high. Single-wall corrugated in B or C flute handles mixed veg boxes of normal weight well. For heavy loads such as 10 kg of potatoes or a large family box, double-wall board is the safer option because it resists crushing even when the bottom box in a stack is slightly damp.

Reinforced corners and a strong base fold also help. Tell us the heaviest fill you plan to pack and how high you stack, and we will recommend a board grade that will not bow under the weight. A box that collapses on a doorstep does more damage to your reputation than the board saving is worth. Potatoes and squash in 15 kg loads move to our double wall boxes for root crops.

Sizing by Crop and Order Type

Rather than sizing to volume, think about the way you sell. A small household veg box for one or two people might hold 4 to 5 kg of mixed produce and fit in a box around 350 by 250 by 150 mm. A family box takes 7 to 9 kg and needs roughly 400 by 300 by 200 mm. Display trays for shop counters are usually shallow, about 100 to 120 mm deep, so customers can see and reach the produce.

Long vegetables such as leeks, rhubarb or bunched carrots with tops need a longer box or a diagonal pack. Bring along a typical delivery when you first plan sizes, or send us photos with a tape measure in shot. We can then suggest a set of boxes that covers your whole range. Our method for sizing a box from the crop covers long and awkward vegetables.

Printing a Box That Sells Your Farm

Fresh produce sells on trust and story. A printed box can carry your farm name, a short line about how you grow, and a recipe or storage tip that helps customers use what is inside. One or two colours on kraft corrugated look honest and earthy and keep costs modest. Full-colour print on white board works well for retail cartons where you want photography of the produce.

Inside the lid is a perfect place for a recipe card insert that matches what is in the box this week, a reminder of your delivery days or how to swap items. Printing a space for a customer name or route number on the end panel makes packing day smoother for your team.

Colour coding helps on busy packing days. A coloured stripe for small, medium and family boxes lets the team grab the right size without reading labels, and drivers can check the load at a glance before setting off on the round.

Tell Us the Crop, Then the Round

Vegetable boxes are specified from the crop and the journey together. Root crops are heavy and damp, salad is light and bruises. Tell us what goes in the box, the fill weight and how high the boxes stack on a pallet or in a van. Then describe the round: a veg box scheme that collects boxes back needs a tougher board and a lid that survives ten trips, a one-way box to a farm shop does not. Say if customer names or route numbers go on the end panel. Artwork is a logo and a line about the farm, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows the print with vent and hand-hold positions marked. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, minimums are low and quoted per job, and food-contact grade board is available on request for produce that sits directly on the card. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval with free tracked delivery to a UK mainland address. Small orders that do not need a box go in our kraft grocery bags for small orders.

Vegetable Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering vegetable boxes.

How many vent holes does a vegetable box need?

It depends on the produce. Leafy greens need generous ventilation, while potatoes and roots keep better with fewer, smaller holes placed low on the sides.

Will the box cope with damp vegetables?

Corrugated card handles some moisture well. Let freshly washed produce drain before packing, and ask about a water-resistant coating if your boxes are often wet.

Which board should I choose for heavy boxes?

For 10 kg loads or high stacks, double-wall corrugated is the safer choice. Lighter mixed boxes are fine in single-wall B or C flute.

Can the boxes be reused on delivery rounds?

Many schemes collect empty boxes and reuse them while they are clean and sound. A folding style with no glued base makes that easier.

Can produce sit directly on the card?

Food-contact grade board is available on request where produce touches the box. Many growers also line boxes with paper for leafy items.

Can I print recipes inside the lid?

Yes, the inside lid can carry a recipe, storage tips or delivery reminders. A separate printed card insert is another option if recipes change often.

How do I size a box for long vegetables?

Measure the longest item you send, such as a leek, and we will size a long box to fit it lying flat. Sending a photo with a tape measure helps.

Can you print customer names on boxes?

We can add a blank panel on the end for writing a name or route number. Variable name printing is also possible for regular subscribers.

One colour or full colour?

One or two colours on kraft suits most farm brands and keeps costs modest. Full colour works best on white board for retail cartons with photography.

How do I store flat boxes before packing?

Keep them dry and off the floor, ideally on a pallet or shelf. Damp storage weakens corrugated board before it is even used.

When will printed boxes reach the farm?

Allow 4 to 7 working days of production once the proof is signed off, then 2 to 3 working days for free tracked delivery to a UK mainland farm address. Tell us the first packing day and we plan the proof around it. Boxes arrive flat in bundles on a pallet for larger orders.
