What Digital Printing Changes for a Pizzeria

Traditional pizza boxes are flexo printed with plates, one plate per colour. That is economical for very large runs, but it pushes small businesses towards one-colour logos and large minimum orders. Digital printing skips the plates entirely. Your artwork goes directly to the press, so a lid with a photograph, an illustration or a dozen colours costs no more to set up than a simple logo.

That opens up options independent pizzerias rarely had before. You can print a full-bleed illustration of your shopfront, a bold pattern across the whole lid or a limited-run design for an anniversary, a collaboration or a local event. Because runs can be short, you can try a design, see how customers react and change it on the next order.

It also makes it practical to print different designs for different sizes, or to carry a QR code linking to your online ordering page.

Digital print also stays consistent from box to box. Every lid in a run is printed from the same file, so colours and details match across the whole order, and a reorder months later can be printed from the same approved artwork. Plate-printed runs for very large volumes are covered on our custom pizza boxes with flexo print page.

Board and Construction

Pizza boxes are made from E-flute or B-flute corrugated board. E-flute is thinner, prints sharper and suits boxes up to around 12 inch pizzas. B-flute is thicker and stiffer, which matters for larger pizzas and boxes that will be stacked several high in a delivery bag.

The standard style is a one-piece folding box with a locking front flap and air vents in the sides to let steam escape. Venting keeps the base crisp rather than soggy. Corners fold and lock without glue, so the boxes arrive flat and are folded at the pass as orders come in.

Grease is the main enemy of pizza boxes. The inside kraft liner absorbs some oil, but a pizza box liner or a sheet of greaseproof paper under the base keeps the board cleaner and the print on the lid unmarked. Many pizzerias use a printed liner as an extra branding opportunity.

Delivery drivers stack boxes in insulated bags, so stiffness matters. A box that bows under the weight of the boxes above it can squash toppings, which is why larger sizes are usually made in B-flute.

  • E-flute: sharper print, lighter weight, ideal for small and medium pizzas
  • B-flute: stronger stacking, better heat retention for large pizzas
  • White top liner for bright digital print
  • Kraft inside liner to absorb some moisture

Designing for Digital Printed Pizza Boxes

The lid is your billboard. Most of your customers see it on a kitchen table or in a delivery photo shared online, so design for the top view first. Keep your name and ordering details large and clear, and let the illustration or photography fill the rest of the space.

Side panels are visible when boxes are stacked on the counter or in a delivery bag, so a repeated logo or your phone number on the front edge is useful. Inside the lid can carry a menu highlight, a loyalty offer or a thank you message, which customers see as soon as they open the box.

Avoid placing important text right at the folds or air vents, where it can be distorted. We check this in the free design proof and flag anything that falls in a risky area.

Colour on corrugated board is slightly softer than on smooth card, because the fluted surface absorbs a little ink. Bold, saturated colours and strong contrast work best. We will advise in the proof if fine lines or very pale tints are likely to fade.

Short Runs, Multiple Designs

Because there are no plates, digital printing makes it easy to split an order between designs. A pizzeria might print most boxes in its standard design and a small batch in a special edition for a local football team, a charity night or a new menu launch.

It also suits new businesses. A pop-up or new opening can order a modest quantity, see how quickly it uses them and then reorder at a larger volume once trading settles. Minimums are quoted per job, so you only order what you need.

Collaborations work particularly well. A local artist, brewery or sports club designs a lid, you print a few hundred and promote the box on social media. Customers order to get the special edition, and the artist or partner shares it with their own followers.

Any new pizza, anniversary or local event can be the reason for a fresh design, and the short run keeps it feeling special. Plain boxes for the everyday menu, kept beside the special edition, are stocked as white pizza boxes for small runs.

Practical Sizing

Pizza box sizes are normally quoted in inches by pizza diameter, so a 12 inch box is roughly 310 mm square inside. Measure the largest pizza you serve in that size, add a little clearance for the base edge and choose the box depth based on topping height. Deep-pan pizzas need a deeper box than thin crust.

If you sell sides such as garlic bread or wings, matching smaller boxes in the same design help the whole order look coordinated.

Storage matters in small kitchens. Flat-packed pizza boxes take up space, so order quantities that fit your storage and your weekly use. With short runs available, it is easy to order little and often rather than tying up space and cash in a large stock.

If your sizes are unusual, such as a 9 inch or an 18 inch party pizza, we can make boxes to order. Send us the pizza diameter and the depth you need. Our guide to measuring food for a box explains clearance and depth.

Measure Your Largest Pizza in Each Size Band

Pizza boxes are quoted by the inch, but pizzas are not, so measure the biggest pizza your kitchen actually produces in each size band, add a little clearance for the base edge, and choose the depth from the topping height: 40 mm for thin crust, 45 to 50 mm for deep-pan. Say which sizes are stacked in delivery bags, because those move to B-flute, and tell us if a printed liner is wanted. Each design is quoted in its own quantity.

Send the sizes, quantities and the lid artwork, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with simple designs from £0.25 and minimums quoted per job. The free proof shows the lid, the sides and any inside print, with text near vents and folds flagged. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and the flat-packed boxes arrive by free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses in 2–3 working days. Misprinted or damaged boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Pizzerias that also sell by the slice usually add flatbread and slice boxes in the same print.

Digital Printed Pizza Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering digital printed pizza boxes.

Is digital printing more expensive than flexo printing?

For short runs and colourful designs, digital is usually cheaper because there are no plates to make. For very large runs of a simple one-colour logo, flexo can work out cheaper per box.

Can I print photographs on a pizza box lid?

Yes. Digital printing handles photographs, gradients and detailed illustrations. White top liner board gives the brightest result.

Will the boxes keep pizzas hot?

Corrugated board insulates well, and B-flute retains heat slightly better than E-flute. Air vents let steam escape so the base stays crisp.

Can I order different designs in one order?

Yes, digital printing makes split designs easy. We quote each design and quantity so you can see the cost of each.

How long does a flat pizza box take to fold at the pass?

A few seconds once the corners are familiar, because the one-piece box locks without glue or tape. Boxes arrive flat in bundles, so a stack beside the oven is folded as orders come in. New staff usually get the knack after a dozen boxes.

Will an inside lid print show through grease?

Not if the print sits on the white liner and the pizza rests on a liner sheet or the kraft base. Grease marks the base, not the lid, so a loyalty offer or menu inside the lid stays clean. A printed liner under the pizza protects the base print too.

Does a 12 inch E-flute box cope with a stack of four in a delivery bag?

Yes for medium pizzas, because the E-flute walls carry the weight well at that size. Above 14 inches the lid spans further and can bow under a stack, so larger boxes are made in B-flute. Food-contact grade board is available on request for either flute.

How do I choose the right box depth?

Thin crust pizzas sit well in a standard 40 mm depth. Deep-pan or loaded pizzas may need 45 to 50 mm to keep toppings off the lid.

Can I add a QR code for online ordering?

Yes. We print QR codes and check them in the proof to make sure they are large and clear enough to scan.

Can a new pizzeria order a small quantity?

Yes, minimums are quoted per job. Digital printing suits new openings that want to test a design before committing to a large run.
