Custom Motor Oil Boxes and Outer Cases

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom motor oil boxes carry heavy bottles and cans of lubricant from the blending plant to garages, motor factors and car parts shelves. We make printed corrugated outer cases with dividers, plus retail cartons for premium oils, built to take the weight and to show your brand clearly in a busy stockroom.

Heavy, Slippery and Handled Constantly

Engine oil is dense. A case of litre bottles or a pair of five-litre containers is a substantial weight, and it is lifted, stacked and moved many times between your warehouse and the end customer, which is why these cases are built like our double wall corrugated boxes. On top of that, oil has a habit of finding its way onto the outside of bottles during filling, and a single weeping cap can soak a weak box from the inside. Packaging for lubricants has to be stronger and more forgiving than most retail cartons.

The usual answer is corrugated board, chosen to suit the load. Single wall board is fine for lighter retail cartons holding one bottle. Outer cases holding several litres usually need a double wall construction, which resists crushing when pallets are stacked several layers high and keeps its shape if the box gets damp.

Getting the board right protects more than the product. Collapsed or oil-stained cases look unprofessional in a trade counter, and garages quickly notice which brands arrive in good order.

Case Styles for Lubricant Brands

Different points in your supply chain call for different boxes. These are the formats we make most often for oil and lubricant companies, with the brake fluid boxes following the same pattern:

  • Regular slotted outer case: the workhorse shipping box, with flaps meeting in the middle, holding bottles in rows with or without dividers.
  • Divided case: an outer case with a cardboard grid that keeps each bottle upright and separate, preventing caps rubbing and bottles toppling.
  • Shelf-ready tray: an outer case with a perforated front that tears away so the case becomes a display tray on a shelf.
  • Retail carton: a single bottle or can box for premium oils, additives and gift packs, printed in full colour.
  • Wrap-around case: a board wrap that hugs a group of bottles tightly, often used on automated filling lines.

Dividers, Fit and Stacking

Bottles of oil are tall and narrow with a handle or shoulder, which makes them prone to tipping in a box that is even a little too large. Corrugated box dividers solve this by giving each bottle its own cell. They also stop caps from rubbing against neighbouring bottles and loosening, a common cause of leaks in transit.

Size the case around the bottle's widest point, including the handle, and allow a few millimetres for the divider board. The height should match the bottle closely so the top flaps rest on the caps, which spreads the weight of the case above and stops the box bulging.

Stacking strength depends on the board, the box shape and how full the case is. A case that is packed firmly to the top with no empty space stacks far better than a half-empty one. If your cases go on pallets, tell us how many layers high they will be stacked and we will specify the board accordingly.

Hand holes are worth considering on heavier cases. Two oval cut-outs on the short ends let staff lift a full case with a proper grip instead of hugging it, which is safer and reduces dropped cases. They slightly weaken the end panels, so we place them high and keep them small on double wall board.

Dealing With Oil on the Outside

No filling line is perfect, and a thin film of oil on a bottle will eventually show on plain board as a dark stain. On outer cases this is often acceptable, but on retail cartons and shelf-ready trays it spoils the look, which is where the print and finish options compared page helps with coatings. A coated board or a printed varnish slows oil penetration and keeps the outside cleaner for longer.

Inside, a plain divider absorbs small amounts of oil without passing it on to the outer wall, which is another quiet benefit of using them. For premium retail cartons, a laminated finish offers the best resistance to marks and fingerprints from workshop hands.

Make sure bottles are fully sealed and wiped before packing; the best box in the world will not stop a loose cap from causing trouble.

Printing for Warehouses and Trade Counters

Outer cases are often read from a distance across a warehouse or from the end of a racking aisle. Large, bold text naming the product, viscosity grade and pack size on at least two sides of the case makes picking faster and reduces mistakes. A strong brand colour band around the case helps staff spot your products immediately.

One or two colour flexographic printing is economical for outer cases and gives clear, solid results on brown or white corrugated board. Retail cartons and display trays, which customers see on the shelf, usually justify full colour print with product photography, specification details and your brand story.

Leave space on the case for barcodes, batch codes and any handling or storage symbols. Many brands print a blank panel where a label can be applied on the line with batch details.

Matching the case colour band to the cap or label colour of each grade gives warehouse staff a second visual check before a case leaves the shelf.

Retail Cartons for Premium Oils and Additives

Not all motor oil packaging is about logistics. Premium synthetic oils, classic car lubricants, motorcycle oils and fuel additives are often sold in individual printed cartons that sit on a shelf beside competitors. Here, the box is a marketing surface. A strong design, a clear explanation of which engines the oil suits, and a finish that survives handling in a workshop all help sell the product.

Gift packs are increasingly popular too: a carton holding an oil, a cleaning product and a cloth, sold to car enthusiasts. A card insert keeps each item in place, and a window can show the bottles.

We make these cartons in folding boxboard or a light corrugated board depending on the weight.

Tell Us the Pallet Stack Height Before the Print

Oil cases are specified from the pallet, not the shelf. Say how high the cases are stacked in your warehouse and in transit, because a 12 x 1 litre case at the bottom of a six-high stack needs double wall board where a single bottle carton does not, and that decision comes before any artwork. Then give the bottle dimensions with the cap and handle, how many go in each case and whether they travel upright, since dividers keep tall bottles from tipping and soak up small leaks. Mention if bottles leave the line with a film of oil on them, as a coated board stops the stain showing.

Send those details with the print you want, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day with a free proof showing the print on each panel; minimums are low and set per job, so one product line can start and others follow. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland sites in 2 to 3 working days, with artwork held for repeat orders. Lubricant brands that also sell filters usually add matching oil filter boxes in the same colours.

Motor Oil Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering motor oil boxes.

Should I use single or double wall board for motor oil cases?

Single wall suits single bottle cartons. Cases holding several litres, especially if stacked on pallets, are usually double wall.

Do I need dividers in my oil cases?

Dividers keep bottles upright, stop caps rubbing loose and absorb small leaks. They are strongly recommended for multi-bottle cases.

How do I stop oil staining the box?

A coated board or printed varnish slows oil penetration. Wiping bottles after filling makes the biggest difference.

Can the case become a shelf display?

Yes. A shelf-ready tray has a perforated front that tears away, turning the shipping case into a display.

What should I print on an outer case?

Product name, viscosity grade and pack size in large text on at least two sides, plus barcodes and handling symbols. One or two colour flexo on kraft is the usual choice, because it reads clearly from across a warehouse aisle.

Can I print batch details on the line?

Yes. We leave a blank panel where you can apply a batch label or ink jet code during packing.

Do you make retail boxes for single bottles of oil?

Yes, full colour retail cartons for premium oils and additives, with laminated finishes that resist workshop handling. The carton is sized to the bottle with its cap so it stands straight on a trade counter.

How high can oil cases be stacked?

It depends on the board and how full the case is. Tell us your pallet stacking height and we will specify the board to suit.

What does a printed motor oil box cost?

Prices depend on size, board and print. Simpler printed boxes start from £0.25 on larger runs, and outer cases are quoted individually.

How fast can a new case design go into production?

After proof approval we produce in 4 to 7 working days, and free tracked delivery to UK mainland sites takes 2 to 3 working days. Send the stacking height with the enquiry so the board grade is settled before the proof.
