What an Air Filter Box Has to Survive

An air filter looks tough, but the pleated media inside is easy to dent. A crushed pleat lets dust slip past the seal, and a mechanic who opens a box to find a bent frame will send it straight back. The box is the only thing standing between your filter and a crowded van, a parts shelf stacked five high and a courier who throws rather than places.

That is why we treat these as working cartons first and retail boxes second. The board has to resist crushing from above, the corners have to hold their shape, and the flaps need to close firmly enough that a filter cannot slide out when the box is picked up by one end. Once that is right, the print can do its job of making your brand easy to spot on a busy shelf. The same thinking goes into our boxes for heavier automotive parts, which share a warehouse journey with filters.

Matching the Box to the Filter Type

Panel filters for most cars are flat and rectangular, so a shallow tuck end carton or a crash-lock base box suits them well. Round filters for older engines, vans and plant machinery are cylinders with a hole in the middle, and they sit best in a square box with a little extra height so the rubber seal is not squashed. Cabin pollen filters are long and thin and often travel in a sleeve-style carton with a tuck at each end.

Measure the filter at its widest points, including any rubber gasket or plastic lip, then add a few millimetres all round. If you supply several filter shapes, it is usually cheaper to settle on a small family of box sizes than to make a unique box for every part number.

  • Tuck end cartons for light panel and cabin filters
  • Crash-lock base boxes for heavier filters that need a strong bottom
  • Square corrugated boxes for round heavy-duty filters
  • Shipping cartons that hold multiple boxed filters for trade orders

Part Number Panels and Shelf Picking

A parts counter works from codes, not pictures. The end panels of your box are what a picker sees when filters are stored side on, so we recommend putting the part number, vehicle fitment and barcode there in large, dark type. Many brands keep the main faces for the logo and a photo of the filter, then repeat the part number on two ends so the box reads correctly whichever way it was shelved.

If you sell hundreds of part numbers, printing each one separately is rarely practical. A common approach is one printed box design per size with a blank white panel left for a printed sticker. Your warehouse labels the box as it is packed, and the outer print stays the same across the range. We can supply matching labels for that panel if it helps. If part numbers change often, printed part number labels on plain cartons keep the stock of boxes flexible.

Board Choices for Custom Air Filter Boxes

Light car filters travel happily in a thick folding board. It takes a sharp print, folds cleanly and stacks well on a retail shelf. For commercial vehicle and agricultural filters, which can be large and heavy, single wall E-flute or B-flute corrugated board gives far better crush strength while still printing well enough for a clear logo and code panel.

White board shows bright brand colours and photos. Kraft board has a plain, workshop look that some trade brands prefer, and it hides scuffs from handling. Either can be printed in full colour, though dark colours on kraft look more muted than on white. The differences between corrugated flutes and folding boxboard are set out in our plain-English guide to board grades.

Print, Coatings and Handling

Parts boxes get handled with oily fingers, so a gloss or matt coating over the print is worth having. It wipes clean, resists scuffing and keeps the barcode readable after weeks in a stores bin. A gloss coating gives a stronger shine on photo panels, while matt suits a restrained, technical look.

Keep fitment tables and small print to the side panels where they have room, and keep text at a size a fitter can read at arm's length. Spot colour print for a logo and code is the most economical option for large runs; full colour suits brands that show a product photo on every face. Our side-by-side look at coatings shows how varnish, matt and gloss laminations handle oily hands.

Keeping Pleats Safe Between Warehouse and Workshop

Most damage to filters happens after they leave your building. A box of filters might go from your warehouse to a distributor, then to a motor factor, then onto a delivery van that visits a dozen garages before lunch. Each step adds a knock or a stack. A snug box with firm flaps takes most of that punishment, but a few small details help a great deal.

For round filters, a simple card disc in the top and bottom stops the seal from rubbing against the flaps. For deep panel filters, a crash-lock base gives a flat, rigid floor that does not open under weight. And for any filter going out by parcel carrier on its own, a corrugated box is safer than folding board, because couriers rarely treat a small carton gently.

If you are unsure what level of protection a filter needs, tell us how it travels and how it is stored. We will suggest a board and style on your quote and explain why, so you can weigh the cost against the returns you are trying to avoid. Small items that travel with filters, such as bulbs, use the same board thinking on our car light bulb box page.

Start With the Pleat Height, Not the Box Size

Filter cartons are easiest to get right when you work from the filter outwards. Measure the pleat pack at its tallest point and the frame at its widest, then add 3 to 5 mm on each side so the filter slides in without the pleats scraping the board. If you sell a family of sizes, send the full list and we will tell you where two or three part numbers can share one carton with a different label. Choose the board next: single-wall corrugated for heavy truck filters, folding boxboard for light panel filters that sit on a retail shelf. Artwork needs a clear part number panel, a barcode at the right size and your logo as a vector file. We send a free proof showing the dieline and print, quote by email within one working day, and run production over 4 to 7 working days once the proof is approved. Misprinted or crushed cartons reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Trade customers posting filters out also use our heavier automotive shipping boxes as the outer carton.

Air Filter Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering air filter boxes.

How much clearance should I allow around an air filter?

Allow about 2 to 3 mm on each side for a panel filter and a little more on height for round filters, so the rubber seal is not pressed out of shape. If the box is too loose, the filter will rattle and the corners can be damaged. We check your measurements against the dieline on the proof.

Can each part number have its own printed box?

Yes, but for large ranges it is usually better to print one design per box size and add the part number as a label. That keeps your stock of boxes simple and lets you add new part numbers without a fresh print run. We can quote both ways.

Which board suits heavy truck and tractor filters?

Single wall corrugated board, usually B-flute, is the better choice for big, heavy filters. It resists crushing when boxes are stacked on a pallet and protects the pleats in transit. Lighter car filters are fine in thick folding board.

Will a coating stop oily handprints marking the box?

A gloss or matt coating makes the surface much easier to wipe and resists light grease and scuffing. It will not make the box oil-proof, but it keeps print and barcodes readable for far longer on a workshop shelf.

Can you print barcodes on air filter boxes?

We can print barcodes you supply as part of the artwork. Keep them dark on a white background and at a sensible size so scanners read them first time. The proof shows exactly where each barcode sits.

What shape box suits a cabin pollen filter?

Cabin filters are long and slim, so a sleeve-style carton with a tuck at both ends works well. It slides onto a shelf like a book and the end panel carries the part number. Tell us the filter size and we will set the box around it.

Can a small cabin filter box hang on a peg?

Yes, a cabin or pollen filter carton can have a euro slot or hang tab punched into the top flap. It suits motor factors who display small filters on pegboard. Heavy panel and truck filters are too weighty for a tab and belong on a shelf.

How quickly can a new filter range be boxed?

Your custom quote arrives by email within one working day. After you approve the free design proof, production takes 4 to 7 working days and free tracked UK mainland delivery usually takes another 2 to 3 working days.

Do you supply outer cartons for trade orders?

We can make plain or printed corrugated shippers that hold a set number of boxed filters. These protect retail boxes on the way to motor factors and keep counting simple at goods in. Give us the box size and pack quantity and we will size the outer.

What happens if boxes arrive crushed or misprinted?

Report any misprint or damage within 10 days of delivery with a photo, and we will reprint or refund the affected boxes. It helps to check a sample from each carton when the delivery arrives.

Can I order a small first run to test a new filter?

Yes, minimums are low and quoted per job, so a trial run for a new part number is possible. Many brands start with one or two sizes and add more once sales settle.
