Custom Folded Greeting Cards With Envelopes
Custom folded greeting cards are printed flat on heavy board, creased on a machine and folded so the spine sits straight and the front opens cleanly. Each card comes with a matching envelope, in A5, A6 or square sizes for card brands, illustrators and businesses sending their own.

Two Very Different Card Buyers
Folded cards are ordered by two groups with different priorities. Independent card publishers and illustrators sell cards to shops and online, so every detail counts: board feel, colour accuracy, the crease, the envelope shade, the back panel with the barcode and credit line. A card that feels thin or cracks along the fold will not get a second order from a stockist.
Businesses order folded cards to send themselves: thank-you cards for clients, welcome cards for new members, sympathy cards from a practice, or occasion cards for staff birthdays and leaving dos. For them the card is a relationship gesture. It needs to look like the business, leave room for a personal message in pen and arrive in an envelope that can be addressed by hand or printed in a batch.
Knowing which group you belong to shapes almost every choice that follows. A publisher may pay more for a heavier board and a foil detail because the card has to win a sale against dozens of others on a stand. A company sending cards to clients usually cares more about brand colour, a clean inside layout and envelopes that match its letterheads, and less about shelf appeal. Businesses that send a note with every order usually settle on the smaller printed thank-you cards for parcels.
Picking a Format: A6, A5 or Square
A6 folded cards are pocket-sized at 105 x 148 mm when closed. They are the default for thank-you notes, enclosures in parcels and small retail cards sold in multipacks. A5 folded cards, 148 x 210 mm closed, give artwork more room and feel generous in the hand; they suit illustrated designs, photographic cards and corporate occasion cards that will be signed by a whole team.
Square cards have become a favourite for art-led designs because they frame illustrations without cropping. Common closed sizes are 150 x 150 mm and a smaller 125 x 125 mm. Bear in mind that square envelopes can attract a higher postage rate, so if your customers post the cards, check the format before choosing it for a large range. Square cards need the matching square envelopes in card colours, which we supply with them.
- A6: thank-you notes, parcel enclosures, small retail cards
- A5: illustrated cards, team-signed occasion cards
- Square: art prints and photographic designs
- Landscape or portrait fold on any format

Board Weight, Texture and the Crease
A greeting card is judged the moment it is picked up, so the board matters more than anything else. Heavier boards feel substantial and stand up on a mantelpiece without bowing. Uncoated boards have a natural, slightly toothy surface that takes pen and pencil well, which suits cards people will sign and fill with a message. Silk boards show photographs and bright illustration with more punch while still accepting a ballpoint.
Every card is creased before folding. On heavy board this is what stops the surface from cracking along the spine, especially where dark ink covers the fold. Textured stocks such as hammered or linen finishes add character for formal cards, though they soften very fine linework. If your artwork has a dark background running across the fold, tell us and we will recommend a board that folds without white showing through. The boards are shown with their crease behaviour in our guide to card and board types.
Laying Out Front, Inside and Back
A folded card has four panels, and each one does a job. The front carries the artwork or message. The inside right is where the sender writes, so most publishers leave it blank or add a short line of greeting near the top. The inside left is often left plain, though a soft pattern or a small logo can work for business cards. The back is the quiet panel: credit line, website, barcode for retail and a short description of the design.
Supply your artwork as a flat sheet with 3 mm bleed on every outer edge and keep text at least 5 mm inside the trim and away from the fold. The free design proof shows all four panels in position so you can check orientation, which is where most card mistakes happen.
Business senders often forget the inside left panel, which is the first thing seen when the card opens. A short printed line there, such as a thank-you from the whole team, means a busy manager only has to sign rather than write a paragraph in every card. The free proof laid out as the flat sheet shows which panel is the front and which is upside down before printing.
Finishes Worth Using Sparingly
Most cards look their best with no coating at all, because the natural board is pleasant to hold and easy to write on. When you want a little more, a few finishes are worth considering. Hot foil in gold, silver, copper or a coloured foil picks out lettering and small motifs beautifully. Blind embossing raises a pattern with no ink, which suits wedding and sympathy designs where restraint matters. A matt or soft-touch lamination on the outside adds protection for cards sold loose in shops.
Spot UV is effective on silk boards for adding a gloss layer to a single element, such as a balloon or a name. Use one special finish per design rather than stacking them; a card with foil, emboss and spot UV together usually looks busy rather than luxurious. Foil and spot UV are compared on card in our print and finish comparison.
Envelopes and Retail Packing
Every folded card is supplied with an envelope sized to it, in white, kraft or a colour that complements the design. Coloured envelopes lift a range on a shop spinner and make a card feel complete. Printed envelopes, with a small logo on the back flap, are a neat touch for businesses sending cards to clients.
For retail, cards can be packed individually in clear cello bags with the envelope behind, which keeps them clean on the shelf. Multipacks of a single design are popular for thank-you cards, and we can supply a printed band or box to hold them; see our greeting card boxes if you want a rigid presentation pack.
Decide the Fold Direction Before the Artwork Is Set Up
The detail that most often sends a greeting card back to the designer is the fold. A portrait fold puts the spine on the left and the card opens like a book; a landscape fold puts the spine along the top and the card opens upward, and the inside panels are laid out differently for each. Settle that, then the closed size, then the board, and only then set up the flat sheet. Publishers should supply every design as its own flat file named with the format, since mixed formats in one order are quoted per size. Decide whether cards are bagged for retail, which affects how they are counted and packed. Cards that will be posted without an envelope are better set up as flat greeting cards printed both sides.
Email the format, fold, board, finish, envelope colour, number of designs and quantity per design, and a custom quote comes back within one working day, followed by a free design proof showing the panels. Cards are printed in 4 to 7 working days once approved and delivered free and tracked on the UK mainland in 2 to 3 days. Cards that crack on the fold or arrive misprinted are reprinted or refunded when reported within 10 days.

Folded Greeting Cards Questions
What buyers ask before ordering folded greeting cards.
Which board is best for writing on with a fountain pen?
Uncoated board is the best choice, because ink sinks in and dries without smudging. Silk boards accept ballpoint and gel pens but can smear fountain pen ink.
Will a dark design crack along the fold?
Every card is creased before folding, which greatly reduces cracking. For very dark designs across the spine, we recommend a board that folds cleanly, and we note it on your proof.
Can I print several designs in one order?
Yes. Publishers often order a small range of designs together, and they can share one job to keep costs sensible. Each design is shown on the proof before printing.
Do square cards cost more to post?
Square envelopes may fall into a higher postage band than rectangular ones of similar size. If your customers post cards, check this before committing a large range to square.
What should go on the back of a retail card?
Most publishers add a credit line, website, a short design description and a barcode if the card is sold through shops. Keep it small and centred near the bottom.
Can the envelope be a different colour from the card?
Yes. White, kraft and a choice of colours are available, and many ranges use one coloured envelope across several designs so the set looks unified on a stand.
Do you offer gold foil on folded cards?
Hot foil in gold, silver, copper and colours can be added to the front or inside. It works best on uncoated or matt laminated board and on lettering that is not too fine.
Can cards be bagged for shop display?
We can supply each card in a clear cello bag with its envelope behind it. That keeps cards clean on spinners and makes them ready to hang or stand in a rack.
How should I set up artwork for a folded card?
Supply the four panels as one flat sheet with 3 mm bleed and a 5 mm safe area from trims and the fold. Our proof shows the layout so you can check which panel is the front.
Can a business print a message inside each card?
Yes. A printed greeting or a short message inside, with space left for a signature, is common for company thank-you and welcome cards. It can be in your brand colours or a simple black.
Is a gatefold card possible?
Gatefold cards with two front flaps opening to the centre are possible on request. They need a different crease plan and are quoted separately from standard folded cards.
