What Patients Need From a Brochure

A patient reading a medical brochure is often anxious, sometimes in pain and usually short of time. They want to know what will happen, what they should do and who to call if something goes wrong, which is why a plain folded patient brochure often serves better than a glossy booklet. The best medical print answers those questions quickly, in short paragraphs, with clear headings and generous white space. It does not try to impress with dense text or clever design.

That makes medical brochures different from most marketing print. The brochure still represents the clinic, and a well printed leaflet builds trust, but its first job is to be understood. Every design decision, from type size to paper colour, should make reading easier.

A good leaflet also takes pressure off staff. When patients have clear written aftercare at home, fewer of them phone the reception desk with questions that the leaflet answers, and the ones who do call are usually better informed.

Many clinics hand out several leaflets in one appointment, so a consistent look across them helps patients recognise which papers came from your practice when they sort through them at home.

Formats Clinics Commonly Use

The format follows the amount of information and how the brochure will be handed out, with a stapled brochure booklet at the longer end.

  • Folded A4 leaflets, either in half or into thirds to DL size, for single treatments and aftercare.
  • Stapled A5 booklets for longer guides such as pre-operative information or condition overviews.
  • Presentation brochures with a heavier cover for private clinics outlining services and fees.
  • Single-sheet A5 cards for quick reference, such as contact numbers or medication reminders.
  • Pocket folders that hold several leaflets together for new patient packs.

Readability Comes First

Type size is the most common problem in medical print. Text that looks fine on a designer's screen can be too small for an older patient or someone without their glasses, and the print and finish options compared page explains why uncoated paper helps legibility. A body size that is comfortable to read on paper, with good line spacing, makes a large difference. Avoid light grey text, thin typefaces and text printed over photographs.

Plain paper colours with strong contrast suit most readers. Some practices use a cream or pale tint to reduce glare, which some readers with visual stress find easier. If you produce material for patients with sight loss, ask us about larger formats and heavier type. We check text sizes on every proof and point out anything likely to be hard to read.

Layout helps as much as type size. Number steps in the order patients should follow them, put warning signs to look out for in a clearly marked box, and repeat the clinic phone number on the back panel where it is easy to find in a hurry.

Diagrams can explain what words struggle to. A simple line drawing of where to apply a dressing or how to position a limb is often clearer than a paragraph, and it prints crisply on uncoated paper.

Paper and Finish for Clinical Settings

Most patient leaflets are printed on an uncoated or silk paper of moderate weight. Uncoated paper is easy to write on, which matters if staff add appointment times or personal notes; the board and card types guide covers the weights. Silk paper gives sharper photographs and diagrams and still takes a pen reasonably well. Gloss paper looks bright but reflects light, which can make reading harder under clinic lighting.

For brochures displayed in waiting rooms and handled by many people, a heavier cover and a wipe-clean matt laminate keep them looking fresh for longer. Leaflets handed to a single patient can be lighter and simpler.

Leaflet racks in waiting rooms usually take DL or A5 formats. If you already own racks, measure the pockets before choosing a size so new leaflets sit upright and remain visible.

Content Accuracy and Sign-Off

Medical content must be accurate, and responsibility for it rests with the clinic or company. We typeset and print what you supply exactly as approved, and we do not edit clinical wording, which also applies to the printed pharmaceutical cartons we print. Your free design proof shows the final layout so your clinical lead or compliance reviewer can check it before printing.

Version control matters too. Print a small version code and date-free revision number in a corner of each leaflet so staff can tell at a glance whether the copy in a rack is current. When guidance changes, we can update the file and reprint without changing anything else in the layout.

Keep a signed-off PDF of each approved proof with your clinical governance records. It shows exactly what was printed and when it was approved, which helps at audit time.

Brochures for Healthcare Companies

Pharmaceutical, medical device and healthcare service companies also order brochures, usually for healthcare professionals rather than patients. These tend to be more detailed and more heavily branded, with product information, clinical summaries supplied by the client and contact details for representatives, often handed over in an A4 presentation folder.

Presentation folders, product sheets and stapled booklets can be produced as a matching set. If the brochures will be sent out with product samples, we can make printed boxes or mailers in the same design, which keeps the brand consistent across print and packaging.

Leaflets for clinics serving communities with different first languages can be printed in several language versions from the same layout. Supply each translated text and we set each version in matching style.

Print a Draft at Full Size and Hand It to the Patient Who Reads Least Well

The test that matters for a patient leaflet is not a proof on a screen but a sheet in a waiting room. Print your draft at full size on a desktop printer, fold it as the final leaflet will be folded, and hand it to a colleague or patient who struggles with small print; if they turn it towards the window, the type is too small or too pale. Add a version code on the back panel before sign-off, so staff can tell an old leaflet from a current one, and say if staff will write on it, which rules out gloss.

Send the final text, any diagrams and the format and paper you prefer, and a custom quote follows within one working day with a free design proof before printing. Clinical accuracy stays with the clinic or company; we print what is approved. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked delivery covers the UK mainland in 2 to 3 working days, with low minimums quoted per job so a single practice can order a modest stock. Clinics assembling new-patient packs usually add printed pocket folders to hold the leaflets.

Medical Brochures Questions

What buyers ask before ordering medical brochures.

Will you check the medical content?

No. Clinical accuracy is the responsibility of the clinic or company. We print exactly what you approve on the proof, and we do not change clinical wording.

What type size should patient leaflets use?

Large enough to read comfortably without glasses for most adults. We flag any text on the proof that looks too small or too light.

Can staff write on the leaflets?

Yes, on uncoated or silk paper. Avoid gloss or laminated surfaces where staff need to add appointment times or notes.

Can you lay out a leaflet from plain text?

Yes. Send your approved text and logo, and we will lay out a simple, readable leaflet for you to check on the proof.

Which format suits aftercare instructions?

A DL tri-fold is compact and fits in a pocket or bag. For longer aftercare, an A5 booklet gives more room without cramping the text.

Can you print large-print versions?

Yes. We can enlarge the layout or reset the text in a larger size for patients with sight loss.

How do we manage updated guidance?

Print a version code on each leaflet. When guidance changes, send the new text and we will update the file and reprint.

Are laminated covers worth it for waiting rooms?

Yes. A matt laminate on a heavier cover keeps brochures looking clean when handled by many patients.

Can you make matching folders for patient packs?

Yes. Printed pocket folders hold several leaflets and a letter together for new patients or treatment packs.

Do you print brochures for medical device companies?

Yes. We print professional brochures, product sheets and matching sample boxes in a consistent design.

Is a reprint quick if we run out?

Yes. We keep your files on record, so a reprint needs only a quantity and approval.
