Packaging Where Accuracy Comes First

For most products, packaging is about attracting attention. For medicines, the first job is clarity. A pharmacist needs to pick the right strength in seconds, a patient needs to read the dosage without squinting, and every panel must carry exactly the wording that has been approved for that product. A smudged digit or a misplaced line is not a cosmetic issue; it is a real problem.

That shapes how we work on pharmaceutical cartons. We print strictly from your supplied, approved artwork, we do not alter text, and we pay close attention to colour consistency, registration and small type. The proof is checked against your file before anything goes to press, and you sign off the final version.

Legibility is a design decision as much as a print one. Choose a clear sans serif typeface, keep text at a comfortable size and use strong contrast between text and background. Colour blocks for strength or dose help, but the key information should still be readable in black and white. Tablet strips and their cartons are covered on our blister pill boxes page.

Custom Pharmaceutical Boxes by Product Type

Tablet and capsule cartons are typically slim reverse tuck end boxes that hold one or more blister strips and a folded leaflet. Creams and ointments need a box sized to the tube, often with the leaflet folded alongside. Liquids and syrups come in taller cartons sized around a bottle and measuring cup or spoon, sometimes with a card insert to keep the bottle upright.

Over-the-counter products sold in pharmacies and supermarkets also need shelf appeal, so the front panel balances brand design with the product name, strength and pack size. Prescription-only cartons tend to be plainer, with more emphasis on information and less on decoration.

Leaflet Space and Carton Sizing

The patient information leaflet often decides the carton size as much as the product does. A folded leaflet can be surprisingly thick, especially for products with long safety sections. Send us the folded leaflet dimensions along with the blister, tube or bottle size, and we will size the carton so both fit without forcing, and without so much space that contents rattle.

If you pack by machine, give us the machine's carton specification. Automatic cartoners need very consistent dimensions, crease quality and flap tolerances, and we will match the dieline to them.

Hand-packed products have different needs. Pharmacies and small health brands packing by hand benefit from cartons that open square and stay open while the product goes in, and from tuck flaps that close firmly without needing tape. A slightly wider tolerance makes hand packing quicker without letting contents rattle. Our guide on how to measure a folded leaflet explains the clearance a leaflet needs beside a bottle.

Regulatory Panels, Braille and Coding Areas

Pharmaceutical cartons usually carry the product name, active ingredient, strength, pack size, dosage directions, warnings, storage advice, marketing authorisation details and a manufacturer address, among other information. You are responsible for the content; our job is to make sure every panel prints sharply and in the right place.

Braille embossing of the product name and strength is common on medicine cartons, and we can emboss braille on the panel you specify. We can also leave clear, unvarnished areas for batch numbers and expiry dates to be printed or stamped on your line, and for barcodes and 2D codes where required. Batch and expiry details can also go on batch labels applied on the line if your coder cannot reach the carton.

Tamper Evidence, Board and Print Quality

Tamper evidence reassures pharmacists and patients that a pack has not been opened. Options include tamper-evident labels across the tuck flap, glue-sealed ends that tear when opened, and perforated tear strips that must be broken to access the contents. Each has different implications for your packing process, so tell us how cartons are closed on your line and we will suggest the most practical option.

Crash-lock bottoms are useful for heavier bottle cartons, locking flat when opened and giving a strong base, while tuck ends suit lighter tablet packs.

Most pharmaceutical cartons use white folding boxboard with a smooth, bright surface for sharp small type and accurate colour. Colour coding across strengths, using different panel colours for different doses, is common and requires tight colour consistency between print runs. We can match to Pantone references and keep records so repeat orders stay consistent.

Finishes are usually practical: a light varnish to protect the print, with clear areas left for coding. Gloss or matte lamination may be used for consumer health products where shelf presence matters more.

Managing Artwork Versions and Reorders

Medicine cartons change more often than most packaging. A new safety warning, an updated manufacturer address or a revised leaflet can mean a new artwork version, and the old cartons must not be used once the change takes effect. Clear version control on the artwork, such as a small version code printed on a flap or the base, helps your quality team confirm that the right carton is on the line.

When you reorder, tell us the version code you want printed and send the updated file if anything has changed. We keep your dielines and colour references on file, so repeat runs match previous ones closely and you are not starting from scratch each time.

Splitting quantities sensibly also helps. If a text change is likely in the near future, ordering a smaller run of the current version and a larger run once the update is approved reduces the risk of having to scrap unused cartons. Every version gets a free proof checked against your artwork before printing.

Send Approved Artwork Files, Not Drafts, With the Leaflet Folded

Pharmaceutical cartons leave no room for guesswork, so the order starts with the final approved artwork for each strength, the folded leaflet dimensions and the product size. We size the carton so product and leaflet fit without forcing, and we print exactly from the files you supply. Mark the panel that needs braille and the areas that must stay unvarnished for batch and expiry coding, and tell us whether the cartons run on an automatic cartoner, because the dieline tolerances differ from hand packing. Pharmacies producing own-label lines often pair the carton with blister pill boxes in the same layout so strengths are told apart by colour.

A custom quote follows by email within one working day, with minimums set to the job. The free proof is checked against your artwork and nothing goes to press until you approve it. Production takes 4 to 7 working days, cartons arrive flat by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, and a misprinted or damaged carton reported within 10 days is reprinted or refunded.
