Custom Folded Brochures
Custom folded brochures turn one printed sheet into a neat, panelled leaflet that guides a reader from a cover to the details and a clear call to action. We print tri-fold, bi-fold and other folds for service businesses, restaurants and attractions that need to explain more than a flyer can hold.

Why a Fold Works Better Than a Flat Sheet
A flat A4 sheet with everything on it asks the reader to take in too much at once. Fold the same sheet into panels and you control the order in which people see things. The cover grabs attention, the first inside panel sets out the offer, and the remaining panels hold the detail, a price list, a map or a menu. The fold creates a small sense of discovery, which keeps people reading.
Folded brochures are also practical. A tri-fold A4 brochure becomes DL size, roughly a third of A4, which fits standard leaflet racks in hotels, tourist information points, waiting rooms and reception desks. It slips into a DL envelope for posting and into a jacket pocket for later. A bi-fold A4 becomes A5, a size that feels substantial without being bulky.
Because a folded brochure is one sheet, it costs less to produce than a stapled booklet, while still giving you six or more panels of space to tell your story. Single sheets cut to a shape are covered under die-cut flyers in custom shapes.
Choosing the Fold Style
The tri-fold, also called a roll fold or letter fold, is the most common: the sheet is folded into three panels, with one end panel tucked inside the other. It suits service brochures, price lists, takeaway menus and visitor guides. The Z-fold has the same three panels, but folded like a concertina, so it opens out in one movement and suits maps and timelines that read across the whole sheet.
A bi-fold, or half fold, creates four panels and works for event programmes, simple menus and property details. A gate fold has two outer panels that open like doors to reveal a wide central spread, ideal for a dramatic product image or a launch. Four-panel roll folds and concertina folds give more panels for longer content, such as walking routes or detailed treatment menus. Clinics and practices with longer treatment lists use the medical brochures with treatment panels layout.
- Tri-fold: the everyday choice for services and menus
- Z-fold: opens in one go, good for maps and timelines
- Bi-fold: four panels for programmes and simple menus
- Gate fold: a wide central reveal for launches
- Four-panel roll or concertina: for longer content

Planning Panels So the Story Flows
On a tri-fold, the panels are not the same width. The panel that tucks inside must be a couple of millimetres narrower so the brochure folds flat without buckling. That is why designing a folded brochure on a plain A4 page with three equal columns often goes wrong. We supply a template with the correct panel widths, folds and safe areas for each style.
Think about reading order. On a closed tri-fold, people see the front cover, then the flap panel, then the three inside panels when fully open. The back panel, behind the cover, is the last seen and suits contact details, a map and opening times. Put your strongest image and a short promise on the cover, explain the offer on the flap, and use the inside spread for the detail.
Images that cross a fold need care. A photo running across two inside panels looks impressive when the brochure is open, but a face or a product placed right on the fold line will be split and creased. Keep key details of any spanning image at least 5 mm either side of the fold, and avoid running small text across it at all. Our proof marks each fold with a line so you can see exactly where it falls on your artwork. Our print and finish options guide covers the crease allowance on thicker stocks.
Paper Weight and Finish
Silk paper is the most popular all-rounder: smooth, slightly sheened, easy to read under any light and good with both photos and text. Gloss makes photography vivid, which suits holiday parks, attractions and food. Uncoated paper has a natural, tactile feel and can be written on, which helps for forms, booking slips and notes.
Paper weight affects both feel and folding. Lighter papers fold easily and keep postage down; heavier papers feel more premium but need to be creased before folding, which we do as standard on thicker stocks to avoid cracking along the fold. For brochures that will sit in racks for weeks, a heavier stock keeps its shape and stops the cover curling. Paper weights are compared in the board and card types guide.
What Businesses Put in Folded Brochures
Service businesses use tri-folds to explain what they do, list services and prices, and give reasons to choose them, from accountants and solicitors to cleaners and dog groomers. Restaurants and takeaways print menus that go in delivery bags and through letterboxes. Beauty salons and spas print treatment menus, while dentists, physiotherapists and clinics print patient information.
Visitor attractions, holiday parks, museums and farms print guides with maps, opening times and ticket information for leaflet racks. Estate agents use them for property details, schools for prospectuses and open days, and charities for fundraising appeals and volunteer information. Brochures handed over in a meeting usually sit in the A3 presentation folders for larger documents or their A4 sibling.
Small Details That Make a Brochure Work Harder
A clear call to action on every page spread, such as a phone number, a booking link or a QR code, turns a brochure into something people act on. Short headings on each panel help readers skim. If prices change often, consider keeping them on a separate insert or directing people to your website, so the brochure stays usable for longer.
For leaflet racks, the top third of the front cover is all that shows, so put the name and the main message there. For menus, test that the most popular dishes are easy to find within a few seconds. And always check phone numbers and web addresses on the proof, as these are the details most often mistyped.
Finally, plan how the brochure will be handed out. One that goes into a bag with every order can be lighter and simpler than one that sits on a display for months. The guide to how custom pricing works explains why a lighter paper on a big run saves more than a smaller run.
Fold a Blank Sheet to Check the Panel Order
The mistake that costs most on a folded brochure is a panel in the wrong place. Before artwork is finished, fold a blank A4 sheet the way you intend, number the panels in the order a reader opens them, and unfold it: that numbered sheet is the map for your designer. Keep small text 5 mm clear of every fold and put the call to action on the panel the reader reaches last.
Choose the flat size, fold style and paper, then send print-ready artwork or ask for a template, and a custom quote is emailed within one working day; prices start from £0.25 per brochure and low minimums are quoted per job, so a short run to test an offer is fine. The free proof marks each fold with a line. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and brochures arrive folded and boxed on free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days; misprints or damage reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Brochures that need more than eight panels move to the stapled brochure booklets for longer content.

Folded Brochures Questions
What buyers ask before ordering folded brochures.
Which fold is best for a leaflet rack?
An A4 tri-fold or Z-fold folded to DL size fits standard leaflet racks. Put the name and main message in the top third of the cover, as that is what shows.
Why are tri-fold panels different widths?
The panel that tucks inside must be slightly narrower so the brochure folds flat. Our templates include the correct widths for each fold.
What is the difference between a tri-fold and a Z-fold?
A tri-fold tucks one panel inside the other, while a Z-fold opens like a concertina in one movement. Z-folds suit maps and content that runs across the sheet.
Which paper should I choose for a menu?
Silk is a good all-rounder for menus. Gloss makes food photos vivid, and heavier stocks hold up better if menus are handled a lot.
Will a heavy paper crack along the fold?
We crease heavier stocks before folding to prevent cracking, so the fold stays clean.
Do brochures arrive folded?
Yes, they arrive folded to their finished size, boxed and ready to hand out or post.
Can I put a booking form inside?
Yes. Uncoated paper is easiest to write on, and a perforated panel can be added for tear-off booking slips.
Do you provide templates for each fold?
Yes. Ask for a template when you request a quote and we will send the panel widths, folds and safe areas.
How much do folded brochures cost?
Prices start from £0.25 per brochure and depend on size, paper, fold and quantity. Send us your details for a custom quote.
Can tri-fold menus be printed in time for a restaurant opening in a fortnight?
Yes, if the artwork is ready. The proof goes back within a day, printing and folding take 4 to 7 working days after approval, and free tracked delivery to a UK mainland address adds 2 to 3 working days, which fits inside two weeks with a day or two spare.
What if a phone number is wrong after printing?
Check contact details carefully on the free proof. If brochures arrive misprinted or damaged through our error, report it within 10 days for a reprint or refund.
