Custom Truffle Boxes

Custom truffle boxes hold each chocolate in its own cavity, so a dozen hand-rolled truffles arrive looking the way they left your bench. We make the outer box and the tray to your sizes, print your brand on it and send a free proof before production starts.

Why Truffles Need More Than a Plain Box

Truffles are soft, round and dusted with cocoa or rolled in nuts, which makes them the most fragile thing a chocolatier sells. Loose in a box they roll into each other, scuff their coatings and leave smears on the lid. A cavity tray keeps every piece apart and upright, so the customer lifts the lid on a neat grid rather than a jumble.

The box itself also sets the price expectation. Truffles are bought as treats and gifts, and buyers judge quality before they taste anything. A well-fitted box with a crisp print and a tray that holds each piece snugly says the contents were made with care. A loose, generic box says the opposite, however good the chocolate.

For shops, a properly sized box also speeds up packing. Staff drop each truffle into its cavity, close the lid and move on, with no tissue or padding needed. For mixed selections of sweets, sweet boxes with card dividers work in much the same way.

Box Styles for Truffle Collections

The style you pick depends on how the truffles are sold and how much each box retails for. Each of these can be made with a matching cavity tray.

If you sell online as well as in a shop, a rigid box with a fitted lid travels better in a mailer, while a folding carton keeps shelf stock compact and quick to assemble.

  • Two-piece rigid box with lift-off lid: the classic premium choice for collections of 9, 12 or 16
  • Folding carton with tuck end: lighter and lower cost, ideal for 2 to 6 piece taster packs
  • Drawer box with a sleeve: the tray slides out like a matchbox, a nice reveal for gift sets
  • Window lid box: shows the first row of truffles through a clear panel on the lid
  • Book-style box with magnetic flap: suits limited editions and corporate gifting
  • Pyramid or cube single-piece boxes: for one or two truffles as wedding or event favours

Getting the Cavity Tray Right

The tray is where most truffle packaging goes wrong. A cavity that is too wide lets the piece wobble and lose its dusting. Too tight and staff squash the truffle trying to seat it. We size each pocket from your actual product, so please measure several truffles from a normal batch, not your neatest one, and give us the widest diameter and the height.

Most hand-rolled truffles fall between 22 and 30 mm across. A pocket around 2 to 3 mm wider than the truffle, with a shallow depth of roughly two thirds of its height, holds it firmly while leaving the top visible. If you sell a mixed box with domes, squares and truffles together, tell us the shapes and we can set different pocket sizes in one tray.

Trays come in card with a printed or plain finish, or in a thin formed plastic in gold, black or clear. Card trays can be printed in your brand colour; formed trays give a glossier, traditional look and grip the pieces tightly. Food-contact grade board is available on request if your truffles sit directly in a card tray. We also make custom chocolate box inserts on their own if you already have outer boxes.

Print and Finish Ideas for Chocolate Boxes

Chocolate packaging tends to use deep colours, so the board and finish matter. A matt laminate on a dark brown or navy box gives a velvety feel and keeps fingerprints from showing. Gold or copper foil on the logo is a natural fit with cocoa tones and lifts a simple design without adding more ink.

Spot gloss can pick out an illustration, a pattern of cocoa pods or your brand mark against a matt background. Embossing works well on rigid lids where the customer will run a thumb over it. Inside the lid is valuable space: a printed flavour key showing which truffle sits in which pocket saves the customer guessing and reduces the number of half-bitten pieces left in the box. Our guide to foil, emboss and lamination shows which finishes suit a dark chocolate box.

Storing and Displaying Boxed Truffles

Chocolate is sensitive to warmth and strong smells, and the box plays a part in keeping it at its best between packing and sale. A close-fitting lid limits air movement around the pieces, and a glassine sheet over the tray stops cocoa dusting transferring to the underside of the lid. If your shop has a sunny window, keep display boxes towards the back and use a dummy box filled with card for the window itself.

For counters, stacking rigid boxes two or three high in a staggered pyramid shows the lids off and lets customers pick one up without toppling the rest. Folding cartons can be supplied with a hang tab or a small easel back so a taster pack can stand upright beside the till. If you stock several flavours, a coloured band or sticker on the side of each box helps staff find the right one quickly when the shelf is busy, and saves opening boxes to check what is inside. For a seasonal counter display, heart shaped chocolate boxes stand out next to square collections.

Sizing a Truffle Box Around Your Count

Start with how many truffles you want in each box, then work outwards. A 3 by 3 grid of 26 mm truffles needs an inner tray of roughly 100 by 100 mm once you allow for walls between pockets. A 4 by 4 grid takes around 130 by 130 mm, and a long box of 2 by 6 makes a slim, elegant gift at about 70 by 190 mm.

Depth is usually 30 to 40 mm, enough for the truffle, the tray and a sheet of glassine paper on top. If you want a ribbon to sit flat across the lid or a gift card tucked inside, add a few millimetres. We can draw up a dieline for you to check against real truffles before you commit. Our guide to measuring your product for a box explains how to allow for wrappers and paper cups.

Ordering for Chocolatiers and Gift Shops

Send us the number of truffles per box, their size, the style you like and an idea of quantity. A custom quote comes back by email within one working day, and minimums are kept low and quoted per job, so a small chocolatier can order a first run without tying up a lot of money in stock.

Every order starts with a free design proof. Once you approve it, production takes 4 to 7 working days and tracked delivery to the UK mainland is free, usually arriving in 2 to 3 working days. If boxes arrive misprinted or damaged, report it within 10 days and we will reprint or refund. Prices start from £0.25 a unit on simpler folding styles, with rigid boxes quoted on size and finish.

A useful tip if you sell several collection sizes: keep the same lid artwork across all of them and change only the count or flavour name. One design file then covers the whole range, and customers recognise your boxes on the shelf whichever size they pick up.

Truffle Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering truffle boxes.

How do I measure my truffles for a cavity tray?

Measure several truffles from a normal batch at their widest point and their full height. Send us the largest figures and we will size each pocket a little wider so pieces sit snugly without being squashed.

Can one tray hold different chocolate shapes?

Yes. If your collection mixes round truffles with squares or domes, we can set different pocket shapes and sizes within the same tray. Send us the dimensions for each shape.

Card tray or formed plastic tray: which is better?

Formed plastic grips pieces tightly and gives a glossy traditional look, which suits travel and postal orders. Card trays can be printed in your brand colours and suit a softer, modern style.

Can the truffles sit directly on the card?

Food-contact grade board is available on request for trays where chocolate touches the card. Many chocolatiers also add a glassine sheet or paper cases for extra protection.

Can you print a flavour key inside the lid?

Yes, the inside of the lid or a separate printed card can show which flavour sits in each pocket. Send us the layout of your collection and we will add it to the proof.

Which box style survives posting best?

A rigid two-piece box inside a snug mailer travels well because the lid will not crush. Folding cartons are fine for shop sales but benefit from extra padding when posted.

Can I use one design for several box sizes?

That is a sensible way to keep costs down. Keep the lid artwork the same and change only the count or collection name, and we will adapt the layout to each size.

What finish hides fingerprints on a dark box?

Matt or soft-touch laminate is the best choice on dark brown, black or navy boxes. Gloss finishes look striking but show handling marks more easily.

Do you make single-truffle favour boxes?

Yes, small cube, pyramid or pillow-style boxes holding one or two truffles are popular for weddings and events. They can carry names or a date-free message printed on the side.

How soon can I have boxes for a new collection launch?

Production is 4 to 7 working days after proof approval, and free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2 to 3 working days. Give us your launch date when you request a custom quote.

What is the starting price?

Simple folding truffle boxes start from £0.25 each. Rigid boxes and formed trays are quoted on size, finish and quantity.
