A Fragile Product Needs a Fitted Box

A hot chocolate bomb is a thin shell of tempered chocolate filled with cocoa powder and marshmallows. It is meant to melt the moment hot milk touches it, which also means it does not enjoy being knocked, squeezed or left in a warm van. The box has to keep the sphere from rolling, stop anything pressing against its surface and give the buyer a clear view of the decoration you spent time piping.

That is why most chocolate makers use a box with an insert. A card insert with a round cut-out cradles the bomb just below its widest point, so it sits still and the top stays clear of the lid. A plastic dome or a clear lid panel above lets people see the drizzle, sprinkles and gold leaf without opening the box. Get those two things right and breakages drop sharply.

Single Cubes, Trays and Gift Sets

Single cube boxes are the workhorse of the range. They sell at the counter as impulse buys, slip into hampers and travel well when posted inside a mailer. A cube with a window on four sides turns the bomb into a little display piece. Trays of two, three, four or six bombs suit gift sets and online orders, and work best as a two-piece box or a box with a hinged lid.

Some makers sell a bomb with a matching mug or a bag of extra marshmallows. For those bundles we build a box with two compartments, one cradle for the bomb and a fitted well for the mug, so neither can knock into the other.

Party favour boxes are a smaller, cheaper option for events and children's parties, where a pillow box or mini gable holds a little bomb and a ribbon. They will not protect a large decorated sphere as well as a cube with an insert, so we suggest them only for smaller, plainer bombs or for ones already wrapped in a bag.

  • Window cube boxes for one bomb
  • Two-piece trays for three, four or six bombs
  • Pillow or gable boxes for party favours
  • Mug-and-bomb gift sets with a divided insert

Measuring Your Hot Chocolate Bomb Boxes

Start with your mould. Most bombs are made in 50 mm, 60 mm or 65 mm half-sphere moulds, and the finished piece is usually a few millimetres bigger once decorations are on. Measure across the widest point and from base to the top of the tallest decoration, then allow a little space around both so the bomb never touches the walls or the lid.

For a cube, an inside size about 10 mm larger than the bomb in each direction is a good starting point. The insert then holds the bomb centrally. If you use more than one mould size, tell us; a box that fits a 65 mm bomb will let a 50 mm one rattle, so it is usually worth having a separate insert for each size even if the outer box stays the same.

Board, Windows and Inserts

We make these boxes from folding boxboard with a clean white or kraft finish. White board shows rich browns, reds and creams beautifully; kraft gives a rustic, homemade look that suits small kitchens and market stalls. A clear window panel or a full clear lid is added from a thin film laminated to the inside of the board, so it sits flush and stays crisp.

Inserts can be made in matching board or in a slightly thicker grade for heavier multi-bomb trays. A round cut-out works for most designs, though a slightly larger opening is better for bombs with tall toppings. Food-contact grade board is available on request for inserts that touch the chocolate directly, or you can wrap each bomb in a clear bag before boxing.

Print and Finish That Look Like Chocolate

Chocolate packaging works best when it feels rich without being fussy. A deep brown or cream base with your logo in gold foil looks luxurious; a bright pastel box with playful lettering suits a younger, fun brand. Spot gloss on the logo against a matte background catches the light nicely through a shop window.

Use the back panel for flavour notes, the ingredients list, allergens and the instructions: place the bomb in a mug, pour over hot milk, stir and enjoy. Customers new to the product genuinely need those steps, and printing them on the box saves you a separate card. Leave a blank area or a small panel where you can add a flavour sticker, so one printed box can cover your whole range.

Keeping Bombs Safe on the Way

Most broken bombs are not crushed; they are cracked by temperature changes or by a box that let them move. Packing each boxed bomb into a fitted mailer, with a little paper fill so nothing shifts, does more for safe arrival than any amount of bubble wrap. Avoid posting on days when parcels might sit in a warm depot over a weekend.

If you sell wholesale to cafés and gift shops, flat-packed boxes take up little space in their stock room, and a display-ready outer carton lets them put a row of cubes straight on the counter. We can print a matching carton or tray for this if you need one.

It is also worth testing a few boxes before a busy weekend of orders. Pack one bomb exactly as a customer would receive it, send it to a friend and ask for a photo on arrival. That quick trial will show whether the insert is snug enough and whether the outer mailer needs more fill, long before a whole run of parcels goes out.

Ordering and Proofs

Send your bomb diameter, height, the number per box and any window or insert ideas. We will email a custom quote within one working day, with prices from £0.25 per box depending on style, size and quantity. Minimums are low and set per job, so you can trial a new box with a small batch first.

You will receive a free proof showing the dieline, the window position and your artwork. After you approve it, production takes 4 to 7 working days, and free tracked delivery to the UK mainland follows in 2 to 3 working days. Anything misprinted or damaged on arrival can be reported within 10 days for a reprint or refund.

Hot Chocolate Bomb Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering hot chocolate bomb boxes.

What size box fits a 60 mm hot chocolate bomb?

A cube of around 75 mm inside gives a 60 mm bomb room for toppings and a cradle insert. We check the height of your tallest decoration before finalising the size. If you send a photo with a ruler beside the bomb, that helps.

Do I need an insert, or will the bomb sit loose?

A loose bomb will roll and can crack when the box is tipped. A card insert with a round cradle holds it in the middle and keeps the top away from the lid. We strongly recommend an insert for any box that will be carried or posted.

Can the whole lid be clear?

Yes, a full clear lid or a clear panel on several sides is possible. It turns each bomb into a little display. The window film is fixed inside the board so the edges stay neat.

Can one box style fit different mould sizes?

The outer box can stay the same while you use different inserts for each mould size. That keeps your printed stock simple while each bomb is held firmly. Tell us all your sizes when you ask for a quote.

Should the bomb be bagged inside the box?

Many makers wrap each bomb in a clear bag before boxing, which adds a layer of hygiene and keeps the cocoa inside if the shell cracks. If the bomb touches the insert directly, ask for food-contact grade board. Both options can be quoted together.

Can you print the melting instructions on the box?

Yes, the back or inside of the lid is a good place for them. Short, clear steps help first-time buyers enjoy the product properly. You supply the wording and we lay it out on the proof.

Can I make a box that holds a mug and a bomb?

Yes, we design a divided insert with a cradle for the bomb and a well for the mug. Send us the mug's height and widest diameter including the handle. The proof shows how both sit inside.

Does gold foil work on kraft board?

Gold foil shows up well on kraft and gives a warm, crafted look. Very fine foil lines can soften slightly on textured board, so we may suggest a small weight increase in thin text. The proof flags anything to watch.

How should I post boxed bombs?

Pack each boxed bomb tightly into a mailer with paper fill so nothing shifts. Avoid weekends in warm depots where possible. A snug inner box is the biggest protection against cracks.

Can I use one printed box for all my flavours?

Yes, leave a panel on the design for a flavour sticker and you can cover the whole range with one box. Many small makers do this to keep stock low. Bigger sellers often move to a printed box per flavour later.

Can I order a sample before a full run?

We can make a plain or printed sample of your box so you can test the fit with a real bomb. It is the best way to check the cradle size and the lid clearance. Ask about samples when you request your custom quote.
