Custom Chocolate Box Inserts
A beautiful chocolate box is only half the job if the chocolates inside slide into a heap on the way home. Our custom chocolate box inserts are card trays with cut cavities or dividers that seat each truffle, praline or bar in its own space, made to fit your boxes and gift sets.

Why the Inside of the Box Matters
Chocolates are fragile in two ways. They can be physically damaged, chipped, cracked or scuffed when they knock together, and they can lose their look when decorated tops rub against each other or the lid. An insert solves both problems by giving every piece a fixed position and a little space around it.
It also shapes the customer's experience. Opening a box and seeing neat rows of chocolates, each sitting in its own cup, looks generous and considered. Opening a box to find pieces jumbled in a corner looks careless, whatever the quality of the chocolate.
For chocolatiers selling online or posting gifts, an insert is often the difference between a happy customer and a request for a refund. It stops movement during delivery far more effectively than tissue or shred.
Inserts also help with portion control and stock planning. When every box holds exactly the same number of pieces in the same positions, packing is faster, assortments are consistent, and staff can see immediately if a cavity is empty before the lid goes on. p3 Boxes built with a fixed grid from the start are covered on our chocolate boxes with built-in dividers page.
Types of Insert for Chocolate Boxes
Card cavity inserts are flat sheets of board with holes cut to the shape of each chocolate, raised on a folded frame so the pieces sit down into the holes. They are neat, easy to print and suit round, square and heart-shaped pieces.
Grid dividers are interlocking strips of card that create square compartments, like a miniature crate. They suit chocolates in paper cups, small bars and mixed sizes, and can be made in any number of rows and columns. Fold-up trays with raised partitions are another option for bars and slabs, holding them on edge or flat in rows.
Two-tier inserts suit larger gift boxes. A lower layer of chocolates sits under a card separator with a pull tab, and a second layer sits on top, so the box holds more without becoming wide and flat. Customers lift the top layer out by the tab to reveal the second, which adds a pleasing second moment of discovery.

Fitting an Insert to an Existing Box
Many chocolatiers already have outer boxes they like and just need an insert that fits. That is straightforward as long as we know the internal dimensions of the box, not the outside measurement. Measure inside the base from wall to wall and the depth from the floor to the underside of the lid.
Then measure your chocolates: the diameter or width of each piece, its height, and whether it sits in a paper cup. With those numbers we can work out how many cavities fit, how they are spaced and how high the insert needs to sit so the tops of the chocolates clear the lid. If you are ordering new boxes at the same time, we size both together.
If you can, send us one of your boxes and a few sample chocolates, or a clear photo of them with a ruler. Shapes such as domes, pyramids and hearts are easier to fit accurately when we can see them, and a physical sample removes guesswork about cup sizes and decoration heights. p2 The guide to measuring products for boxes shows how to take inside measurements.
Board, Colour and Print
Inserts are usually cut from folding boxboard of a similar weight to the box, so they feel solid when handled. White, black, gold and kraft are the most popular colours. Gold or metallic board gives a classic luxury look, black gives brightly decorated bonbons the strongest contrast, and kraft suits artisan and natural brands.
The visible top of the insert can be printed in a brand colour, a pattern or with small numbers beside each cavity that match a flavour guide on the lid. Food-contact grade board is available on request for inserts where chocolates sit directly on the card without cups or liners.
Matching the insert to the lining of the box gives a polished look. If the box interior is printed in a brand colour, an insert in the same colour makes the whole inside feel like one piece. A contrasting insert, such as gold in a black box, draws the eye straight to the chocolates. p2 A gold or black board is also the usual choice for our printed boxes for truffles.
Planning Cavity Layouts
The layout affects how the box looks and how many chocolates it holds. A square grid of four, nine or sixteen is classic and simple. Rectangular boxes suit two or three rows. Alternating patterns, a circle of pieces round a centre, or a single row in a long box create a more distinctive presentation.
Leave enough space between cavities that decorated tops do not touch, and keep a margin from the box walls so fingers can lift pieces out. If you sell several assortments, using the same cavity size across them means one insert design can fit different box sizes simply by adding rows.
Think about how customers eat from the box too. People tend to pick from the front edge first, so placing your signature flavours there, or in the centre of a circle layout, makes sure they are noticed. A flavour guide card that mirrors the layout helps customers find their favourites without poking every piece. p2 The same layout thinking applies to inserts for sweets and fudge, where pieces are less regular.
Who Uses Chocolate Box Inserts
Independent chocolatiers are the main users, followed by patisseries, confectioners, wedding favour makers and corporate gift companies. Truffle makers use cavity inserts to present round pieces, while makers of bars and slabs use partition trays. Gift box companies building hampers use inserts to hold chocolates alongside other treats.
Inserts are also used by bakeries for macarons, by sweet makers for fudge and by brands packing cake pops or dipped strawberries, where each piece needs its own space.
Corporate gift buyers in particular value inserts, because their boxes are often sent out in large numbers to clients and staff, and every one needs to arrive looking identical and intact. p2 Companies sending client gifts in volume often pair the insert with our corporate gift boxes with magnetic lids.
Post Us a Box and Five Chocolates
An insert is cut to a tenth of a millimetre, so the most reliable brief is physical: one of your boxes, assembled, and a few of your chocolates in their cups, including the tallest and the widest piece. We measure the inside of the box, check the cavity size against the real pieces and set the insert height so decorated tops clear the lid. Otherwise send the internal box dimensions and a photo of the chocolates beside a ruler.
Decide the layout next, because it fixes the piece count: a grid of nine, a circle, or two rows of six. Keep the cavity size the same across assortments and one design can grow by adding rows. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, minimums are set per job, and plain card inserts start from £0.25.
The free proof shows the cavity layout at scale. Once approved, inserts take 4 to 7 working days and arrive free and tracked at UK mainland addresses, flat or nested depending on the style. Chocolatiers ordering new outer boxes at the same time usually choose our rigid chocolate boxes with a lift-off lid so both are sized together.

Chocolate Box Inserts Questions
What buyers ask before ordering chocolate box inserts.
Can you cut inserts to fit chocolate boxes I already use?
Yes. Measure inside the base wall to wall and from the floor to the underside of the lid, and tell us the size and height of your chocolates. We design an insert to those figures, and a sample box posted to us removes any doubt about the fit.
How do I measure my box for an insert?
Measure inside the base from wall to wall in both directions, and the depth from the floor to the underside of the lid. Inside figures matter because board thickness varies between boxes.
Can the insert hold chocolates in paper cups?
Yes, cavities can be sized for chocolates in cups, or recesses can be cut to hold the cups themselves. Send a cup so we match the flare at the rim.
Which insert colour shows decorated bonbons best?
Black gives painted and decorated bonbons the strongest contrast, gold reads as traditional luxury, and white or kraft suit simpler, natural ranges. Matching the insert to the box lining makes the inside feel like one piece, while a contrast draws the eye to the chocolates.
Can you number each cavity to match a flavour guide?
Yes, small printed numbers beside each cavity can match a flavour guide printed inside the lid or on a separate card. Customers then find a favourite without poking every piece.
Can chocolates sit directly on the card?
Food-contact grade board is available on request for inserts where chocolates touch the card without cups or liners. Most chocolatiers still use paper cups for easier lifting.
Do you make inserts for chocolate bars?
Yes, fold-up partition trays hold bars on edge or flat in separate rows. Tell us the bar thickness so the slots grip without marking the foil.
Can one insert design work for different box sizes?
If the cavity size stays the same, adding or removing rows lets one design adapt across several box sizes. A nine-piece and a sixteen-piece box can then share one cavity cutter.
Will an insert stop chocolates moving in the post?
A well-fitted insert is far more effective than tissue or shred at holding chocolates in place during delivery. Add a sheet of glassine on top so the lid cannot rub the decoration.
What if the inserts arrive damaged?
Report any misprint or damage within 10 days of delivery and we will reprint or refund the affected inserts. A photo of the fault is all we need.
