Custom Sweet Box Inserts

from £0.25 an insertPriced per job · low minimums

Custom sweet box inserts are the trays that sit inside a confectionery box and give every chocolate, truffle or piece of fudge its own place. They stop sweets knocking together, make a box look full and organised, and turn a simple carton into a proper gift.

What an Insert Does for Your Sweets

Open a box of handmade chocolates with no insert and you can usually tell how far it has travelled. Truffles have rolled into a corner, dusted cocoa has rubbed off, and delicate decorations are scuffed or broken. An insert keeps each piece separate and still, so the box looks the same at the table as it did when you packed it.

Inserts also make a box look generous. A row of chocolates sitting in neat cavities, each one centred, reads as a hand-picked selection rather than a handful of sweets. That presentation is part of what customers pay for when they buy a gift box, and it helps justify a premium price for artisan confectionery.

Finally, inserts make packing faster and more consistent. When each cavity has a clear place, staff can fill boxes quickly without checking how many pieces have gone in, and every box leaves with exactly the right count.

Card Inserts Versus Plastic Trays

Card inserts are cut and folded from printed or plain board. They suit firm sweets such as fudge, nougat, macarons and wrapped chocolates, and they can be printed in your brand colours or lined with foil-effect board for a premium look. Card inserts are easy to customise, quick to change for a new box size and feel natural in a craft or artisan range.

Plastic trays are thermoformed to follow the shape of each sweet closely. They work best for unwrapped pralines, filled chocolates and truffles, where a snug fit protects delicate shells and coatings. Gold, silver, black and clear trays are common, and a shallow cavity profile holds the chocolate while keeping it on show.

Some brands combine both: a card frame that sets the layout inside the box, with small paper or plastic cups for each piece. This gives flexibility when a selection changes often.

  • Card grids for fudge, nougat and wrapped sweets
  • Thermoformed trays for pralines and truffles
  • Card frames with paper cups for changing selections
  • Foil-effect board for premium gift boxes

Designing Sweet Box Inserts Around Your Range

Every insert starts with the sweets themselves. Measure the width, depth and height of each type you plan to pack, including any wrapping or paper case. Then decide how many pieces go in each box and how you want them arranged: a single row for a slim gift, a grid for a classic selection, or mixed cavity sizes for an assortment of bars, truffles and squares.

Leave a little clearance around each piece so it can be placed and removed without damage, but not so much that it moves. For round truffles, a cavity a few millimetres wider than the truffle works well. For square pieces, slightly rounded corners in the cavity help them seat neatly.

If you change your selection often, ask about a universal layout with equal cavities that suit several products, so one insert serves your whole range.

Matching the Insert to the Box

The insert has to fit the box as accurately as the sweets fit the insert. If you already have boxes, send us the internal measurements and we make the insert to drop in snugly. If you are ordering boxes too, we design both together so the insert height, lid clearance and cavity layout all work as one.

Think about depth. The top of each sweet should sit just below the lid so it is held gently when the box is closed. A thin card pad or a printed menu card on top of the insert can take up any spare space and stop pieces lifting during transit.

Lids matter as well. A lift-off lid gives the most clearance, while a hinged lid swings across the top row first, so the cavities nearest the hinge need slightly more headroom. Sleeve boxes slide over the insert, so the insert edges should be smooth and firm enough not to catch.

Printing and Finishing Touches

Card inserts can be printed with a pattern, your logo or even a flavour key, so customers know what each piece is before they bite. A matt black insert makes milk and white chocolate stand out; a gold or ivory insert flatters dark chocolate and colourful sweets.

Many confectioners include a menu card on top of the insert, printed with a small illustration of each sweet and its flavour. Placing it on top means the customer reads it first, lifts it off and then sees the selection beneath.

Inserts printed on the underside can carry a short note, such as storage advice to keep the chocolates cool and away from strong smells, or a message inviting customers to reorder online. It is a space few brands use, which is why customers remember it.

  • Printed flavour keys on the insert surface
  • Contrasting insert colours to frame chocolates
  • Menu cards that rest on top of the tray
  • Ribbon pull tabs for lifting the insert out

Confectioners Who Use Custom Inserts

Artisan chocolatiers are the biggest users, along with fudge makers, sweet shops and patisseries selling macarons. Online confectionery brands rely on inserts to protect stock in the post, and corporate gift companies use them to present branded chocolates. Wedding favour suppliers order small inserts that hold two or four pieces in a tiny box.

Producers who sell gift selections all year, such as birthday, thank-you and new baby boxes, often use the same insert across several printed box designs. That keeps their stock of inserts simple while letting the outer box change with the occasion, and it means packing staff learn one layout instead of several.

Getting Inserts Made

Tell us the box size, the sweets and the layout you want. Our reply comes as a custom quote by email within one working day, with card inserts from £0.25 depending on size and complexity and low minimums quoted per job. If you are unsure of the layout, a photograph of the sweets on a ruler helps us suggest one.

A free design proof shows the insert flat and from above, with each cavity marked. When you approve it, inserts are made over 4–7 working days, then sent tracked at no charge to UK mainland addresses, usually arriving within 2–3 working days. Damage or misprints reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.

Sweet Box Inserts Questions

What buyers ask before ordering sweet box inserts.

Should I choose a card or plastic insert?

Card suits firm or wrapped sweets and looks natural and crafted. Plastic trays hug unwrapped pralines and truffles closely, which protects delicate shells. Your choice depends on the sweets and the look you want.

Can you make inserts for boxes I already have?

Yes, send us the internal size of your box and we make inserts to fit it snugly. A sample box helps us check the fit.

How much space should each cavity have?

A few millimetres more than the sweet in each direction works well. It allows easy placing and removal without letting the piece move around.

Can one insert hold different shaped sweets?

Yes, cavities can be different sizes in one insert, for example truffles, squares and bars. We draw the layout to suit your assortment.

Can inserts be printed with a flavour guide?

Card inserts can be printed with flavour names beside each cavity, or you can add a separate menu card on top. Both help customers choose.

Are the inserts suitable for unwrapped chocolate?

Food-contact grade board and trays are available on request for unwrapped sweets. Tell us what you are packing so we can specify the right material.

Will chocolates stay put in the post?

A well-fitted insert, a box with the right depth and a card pad on top keep pieces still in transit. For posting, add an outer mailer to protect the gift box.

Can I use one insert across different box designs?

Yes, if the boxes share the same internal size. Many confectioners keep one insert and change the printed outer box for different occasions.

Can you add a ribbon to lift the tray out?

A ribbon pull tab under the insert lets customers lift the whole tray out, which is handy for refilling or reaching the menu card beneath.

What do you need to quote inserts?

Box size, sweet sizes, number of pieces and layout. A photo of the sweets beside a ruler is often enough to get started.

What if inserts arrive bent or misprinted?

Report it within 10 days with photos and we reprint or refund the affected inserts.
