What a Good Sweet Box Has to Do
Sweets are small, loose and often sticky, which makes them trickier to pack than they look. Boiled sweets rattle and chip, jelly sweets cling to each other and to the board, and soft fudge marks anything it touches, which is why a plain paper sweet box is rarely enough on its own. A sweet box therefore needs a tight construction with no gaps at the corners, a board that does not shed fibres, and, for anything sugary and soft, a liner or a coated inner face.
It also has to sell. A sweet shop is a riot of colour, and a plain box disappears next to the jars. Bright artwork, a clear brand name and a glimpse of the sweets inside are what persuade someone to pick one up at the till. If you sell online, the box is the first thing a customer sees when the parcel is opened, so it carries much of the impression your shop leaves.
Printed Sweet Box Shapes
The right shape depends on whether the box is filled in front of the customer, filled in advance, or posted. Here are the constructions sweet sellers ask for most, with window sweet boxes covering the counter display:
- Crash lock base boxes with a tuck lid, which pop open in one movement and suit filling at the counter
- Two-piece lid and base boxes for fudge, truffles and premium selections that are packed ahead
- Pillow boxes for a small treat portion or a party favour
- Gable boxes with a carry handle for children's parties and school fairs
- Window boxes with a clear film panel that shows the colours of the sweets
- Tray and sleeve packs with a card divider for assorted flavours

Sizing Sweet Boxes by Weight
Most sweet shops price by weight, so it makes sense to size boxes by weight too. A box for 100 g of jelly sweets is a very different volume from a box for 100 g of fudge, because fudge is dense and jellies are full of air. The simplest method is to fill a container you already use with your most popular sweet at your standard weight, measure the space it takes, and send us those figures. We add a little headroom so the lid closes without squashing anything.
For mixed gift boxes, think about how the sweets should be arranged. Loose pick and mix is happy in an open box, but a selection of six fudge flavours looks far better in a tray with compartments, and the tray stops pieces sticking together in the post. Tell us the size of a single piece and how many you want per box and we will lay out the dividers.
Board, Liners and Contact With Sweets
We make sweet boxes in white folding board for vivid colour and in kraft for a traditional sweet shop feel. Food-contact grade board is available on request, and for soft or sugary products we can add a greaseproof liner or a glassine bag inside the box so the sweets never sit directly on printed board; the board and card types guide explains the grades.
Heavier boards are worth considering for larger gift boxes. A 500 g selection is heavier than it looks, and a thin box can bow in the middle when lifted by one end. Rigid board is another option for keepsake boxes that customers are likely to reuse, such as wedding favours or corporate gift selections.
Artwork That Works on a Sweet Box
Bold, simple artwork tends to win. A strong brand name, one or two signature colours and a repeating pattern of your best-known sweets will be recognised from across the shop, and the same pattern carries onto candy bar boxes for a wider range. Save fine detail for the back panel, where you can list ingredients, allergens and the net weight. If your boxes are filled to different weights, leave a space for a weight sticker rather than printing a fixed figure.
Finishes can lift a sweet box without much cost. Gloss varnish makes colours pop, soft matt laminate feels premium in the hand, and a spot of foil on the logo catches the light under shop lighting. Inside printing is a nice surprise for children and adults alike: a pattern or a short message on the inside of the lid is seen every time the box is opened.
Boxes for Parties, Favours and Online Orders
Not every sweet box is sold over a counter. Party planners order small favour boxes by the hundred, each filled with a few sweets and closed with a sticker or ribbon, and here the priority is a small sweet favour box that folds up fast and looks charming on a table. A pillow box or a tiny cube with a printed name or theme is usually enough, and plain kraft with one ink colour keeps the cost sensible when quantities are high.
Online sweet shops face a different challenge. Their boxes travel through sorting centres, so they need to be strong, close firmly and fit neatly inside a mailer, or work as the mailer itself. A shallow box that slips through a letterbox is worth considering, because it saves customers a trip to the depot and keeps postage lower. Tell us the postal size you want to hit and we will design around it.
Wholesale sweet makers supplying delis and farm shops need yet another approach: a retail box that stands up on a shelf, carries a barcode and survives being stacked in an outer carton. In that case we look at the front panel height, a hang tab if the stockist uses pegs, and how many boxes fit in a case.
Weigh Out a Portion of Your Stickiest Sweet Before Choosing a Size
Sweet boxes are sized by volume, and the sweet that decides it is the lightest, bulkiest one you sell, not the fudge. Weigh out your usual portion of marshmallows or jelly sweets, tip it into a container and measure the space it fills, then do the same with the stickiest sweet to decide whether a greaseproof liner or glassine bag is needed. Those two tests fix the box size and the lining. Then match the style to how the box is filled: a crash lock base for scooping at the counter, a tray and sleeve with dividers for a pre-packed selection.
Tell us the sweets, the portion weights, the style and roughly how many boxes you need, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, simple printed boxes from £0.25 each with minimums set per job. A free design proof shows the artwork flat; production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the flat boxes travel on free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days. Shops that sell a mixed selection often add the sweet boxes with dividers in the same artwork.

Sweet Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering sweet boxes.
How do I work out what size sweet box I need?
Fill a container with your usual weight of your most popular sweet and measure the space it takes. Send us those figures and we add enough headroom for the lid to close without crushing anything. Dense sweets like fudge need far less volume than jelly sweets of the same weight.
Can sweets sit directly in the printed box?
Wrapped sweets can. For loose, soft or sticky sweets we recommend a greaseproof liner or a glassine bag inside the box. Food-contact grade board is also available on request.
Can you add a window so customers see the sweets?
Yes. We cut a window in the front or lid and back it with clear film. Windows work especially well for colourful pick and mix and layered selections.
Which style is quickest to fill at a busy counter?
A crash lock base box opens fully in one movement and closes with a tuck lid, so staff can scoop and close it in seconds. It is the most popular choice for counter-filled pick and mix.
Can I get dividers for a fudge or truffle selection?
Yes. Tell us the size of one piece and how many pieces each box holds, and we design a card tray or divider to keep flavours apart and stop soft pieces sticking together.
Should I print the weight on the box?
Only if each box is always filled to the same weight. Many shops leave a printed space for a weight or price sticker, which lets one box design cover several portion sizes.
Do sweet boxes survive the post?
Sturdy board and a tight construction hold up well inside an outer mailer. For posting without an outer box, ask us about a corrugated sweet mailer printed in your branding.
Can a pattern of sweets be printed inside the lid?
Yes. Printing inside the lid or base is a popular touch, whether that is a pattern of your sweets, a thank you or a note about your shop. The proof shows the inside and outside so you can check both before printing.
What finishes look best on sweet packaging?
Gloss varnish makes bright colours look richer, while soft matt laminate gives a smooth, upmarket feel. Foil on the logo adds sparkle without changing the rest of the design.
How long before my sweet boxes arrive?
Production takes 4 to 7 working days after you approve your free proof, then free tracked delivery to the UK mainland takes 2 to 3 working days. Boxes arrive flat, so allow a little time to fold a first batch before they go on the counter.
Can a small sweet shop order 200 pick and mix boxes?
Yes. Minimums are quoted per job and depend on size and finish, and a run of that size for one style is normal for an independent shop. Prices start from £0.25 per box, and more sizes can be added later in the same artwork.
