Two Ways to Do a Heart Box

There are two quite different products under this name. The first is a true heart-shaped box: the lid and base are cut in a heart outline, with curved side walls that follow the shape. It is instantly recognisable and feels like a classic romantic gift. The second is a conventional square, rectangular or pillow box printed with hearts, which is cheaper to make, easier to pack and stack, and suits favours and multipacks where the shape matters less than the message.

Which one suits you depends on the product and the occasion. A chocolatier selling a box of truffles for an anniversary will usually want the real heart shape. A wedding planner ordering a large run of favour boxes filled with love-heart sweets will often choose a printed folding box, which costs less per piece and packs flat until the night before the event.

A third option sits between the two: a square or round box with a heart-shaped window cut into the lid. It keeps the economy and stackability of a standard box while giving a clear heart outline, and the sweets inside become part of the design. It works especially well with brightly coloured sweets or chocolates with a glossy finish.

Heart-Shaped Boxes: Rigid and Folding

Rigid heart boxes are made from greyboard wrapped in printed or coloured paper, with a lid that lifts off. They feel substantial, hold their shape and are often kept as a keepsake long after the sweets are gone. Satin, velvet-effect and textured papers suit them, and a ribbon or a foil logo on the lid completes the look.

Folding heart boxes are cut from a single sheet of board and fold into shape, usually with a heart-shaped top and tuck-in sides. They are lighter and cheaper than rigid boxes, arrive flat and suit favours and smaller gifts. They hold a few sweets or a couple of chocolates rather than a full tray.

Heart shapes are not all the same, and the proportions matter more than people expect. A wide, rounded heart looks soft and traditional; a taller, narrower heart looks more modern. If you already use a heart in your logo or on your chocolates, we can match the box outline to it so everything feels connected. Send us a drawing or a sample and the proof will show the exact shape. The folding version uses the same board as our printed sweet boxes in standard shapes.

Inserts for Chocolates and Truffles

Chocolates need to be held apart so they do not mark each other. A heart box can include a plastic or card insert with individual cavities, arranged to follow the heart outline. The insert shape depends on the chocolate size and number, and a full heart of truffles looks generous when every cavity is filled. Card inserts suit wrapped sweets and larger chocolates; clear cavity trays suit delicate truffles and decorated chocolates.

Loose sweets such as love hearts, jelly hearts or sugared almonds can go straight into the box, often in a small cellophane bag or wrapped in tissue to keep them together. A paper doily or a printed liner adds a finishing touch.

Think about temperature too. Chocolate marks easily when it is warm, and a heart box sitting in a sunny shop window or in a car on a warm day can bloom before it is opened. If you sell through florists or gift shops, a short storage line on the base, asking for the box to be kept cool, protects your product and your reputation. Shops that want the chocolates visible on the counter choose the sweet boxes with a window lid in a heart print.

Designs for Anniversaries and Engagements

Heart boxes are bought for personal moments: anniversaries, engagements, proposals, birthdays for a partner and wedding favours. The design should feel warm rather than generic. Deep red and blush pink are classic, but gold on cream, navy with copper foil or a soft floral pattern can feel more personal and less expected. A small message on the lid, or inside the lid where only the recipient sees it, adds meaning.

Gift shops selling heart boxes all year round tend to choose designs that work for any romantic occasion rather than one date. Print the brand name subtly and let the heart shape and colour do the talking. The free proof shown on the lid and base is where a date or name is checked before printing.

Wedding and Engagement Favours

Small heart boxes filled with sweets are a popular wedding and engagement party favour. A folding heart box or a small square box printed with the couple's initials, filled with love hearts, sugared almonds or chocolates, sits on each place setting. Couples often order favour boxes alongside invitations and place cards so the design matches.

For favours, keep the box small and the print simple. A monogram or initials on the lid look elegant. Personalised names on each box would need a separate print for each guest, so many couples add a printed tag or sticker instead.

Ordering early helps. Favour boxes are usually assembled and filled by the couple or a planner in the days before the wedding, and having the boxes in hand a few weeks ahead leaves time to fill them without stress. The allowances around each sweet are the ones described in our guide to measuring for a box.

Board, Finish and Food Contact

Folding heart boxes use white or kraft folding board; rigid boxes use greyboard wrapped in paper. Food-contact grade board is available on request for boxes where sweets or chocolates sit directly on the board, and inserts or liners can be used to keep products separate from printed surfaces.

Matt and soft-touch laminations give a gentle, premium feel. Gloss makes reds and pinks look rich. Gold, rose gold and silver foil look beautiful on heart boxes, and embossing a heart or initials on the lid adds a tactile detail. Each finish is shown on a red board in our print and finish comparison.

Decide True Heart or Heart-Printed Before You Measure Anything

The two products under this name are quoted very differently, so settle that first. A true heart-shaped rigid box is built up by hand and costs several times a folding carton; a rectangular box printed with hearts costs about the same as any other sweet box. If the gift is the box, choose the shape; if the sweets are the gift, print the shape. Then lay the chocolates or sweets out as they will sit, count them, and measure the footprint and the height of the tallest piece with its case on. For a true heart, the measurement across the widest lobes decides the size. Favours that only need a ribbon and a monogram are usually the sweet favour boxes with a ribbon tie.

Email the style, piece count, measurements, insert needs and artwork with the quantity, and a custom quote comes back within one working day, followed by a free design proof. Boxes are made in 4 to 7 working days once approved and delivered free and tracked on the UK mainland in 2 to 3 days; folding boxes arrive flat and rigid hearts built. Boxes that arrive crushed or marked are replaced or refunded when reported within 10 days.

Heart Sweet Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering heart sweet boxes.

Is a heart-shaped box more expensive than a square one?

Usually, yes. The curved shape needs a special cut and, for rigid boxes, hand finishing. A square box printed with hearts is more economical.

Can a heart box hold a full tray of chocolates?

Yes, with a cavity insert shaped to the heart outline. We size the insert to your chocolates.

Do folding heart boxes arrive flat?

Yes. Folding heart boxes are supplied flat and fold into shape when needed. Rigid boxes arrive made up.

Can I print initials on wedding favour boxes?

Yes. Initials or a monogram on the lid look elegant. Individual guest names are usually added with a tag or sticker.

Which colours work beyond red and pink?

Gold on cream, navy with copper foil and soft florals all feel romantic without being expected.

Can I add a message inside the lid?

Yes. A printed message inside the lid is seen only by the recipient and adds a personal touch.

Are the boxes suitable for food contact?

Food-contact grade board can be supplied on request for boxes where chocolates touch the board. Inserts and liners can also keep sweets away from printed surfaces.

Can a ribbon be fitted to a heart sweet box before delivery?

Yes. Rigid heart boxes can have a ribbon fixed around the lid or threaded through slots, and folding boxes can be supplied with ribbon cut to length for tying at the packing bench. Say which colour and width you want at the quote stage.

What sweets suit a favour-sized heart box?

Love-heart sweets, jelly hearts, sugared almonds and one or two chocolates all fit a favour box well.

Can florists use these with bouquets?

Yes. A small heart box of chocolates is a popular add-on to bouquets, and florists often order a printed design with their shop name.

What if the heart boxes arrive crushed?

Get in touch within 10 days of delivery about any crushed or misprinted boxes and we will reprint or refund them.
