A Shape That Says It Before the Lid Comes Off

Most packaging has to work hard to show feeling. A heart does it instantly. Before anyone reads a word, they know the box holds something given with affection, whether it is a selection of truffles for an anniversary, a pair of earrings for a bridesmaid or a handful of sweets at a christening. That is why heart boxes are bought far beyond any single date in the calendar.

The shape also changes what happens after the gift. For a gift shop or chocolatier, that means your name stays in someone's home for years.

Because they stand out so clearly on a shelf, heart boxes also work as a counter display piece. A small stack next to the till draws the eye and invites people to pick one up and ask what is inside. If you need a second format, our printed unique boxes can carry the same design.

Folded Card or Rigid Board

Heart boxes come in two broad builds. Folding card heart boxes are cut from a single sheet and assembled with tabs or a curved tuck. They ship flat, cost less per piece and suit favours, sweets and smaller gifts. Rigid heart boxes are made from greyboard wrapped in printed or textured paper, with a separate lid that lifts off. They are heavier, sturdier and the natural choice for premium chocolates and jewellery.

Within those builds there is plenty of room for variation. Lids can be fully printed, have a clear window, or carry a ribbon pull. Rigid hearts can be lined with velvet or satin-effect paper and fitted with a moulded insert. Our board and finish options page sets out the difference between folding card and rigid board.

Sizing Custom Heart-Shaped Boxes for What Goes Inside

Heart boxes are measured across the widest point of the two lobes and from the top dip down to the point, plus the depth. Because the sides curve, the usable space inside is smaller than a square box with the same outer measurements, particularly near the point. Chocolatiers often lay out their chocolates on paper first, draw a heart around them and send that sketch.

For jewellery, depth matters less than the insert. A shallow heart 80 to 100 mm across holds a ring or a pair of earrings on a slotted pad. For chocolates, a heart around 150 to 200 mm wide with 35 to 45 mm depth fits a single layer of pralines in cups. Larger hearts for gift selections can reach 250 to 300 mm across.

If you want a family of sizes, such as small, medium and large hearts that nest together, we keep the curves consistent so they look like a set when displayed side by side.

One practical tip: the point of a heart is the weakest area of a folding card box. If the box will carry anything heavy, keep the contents towards the wider top half, or choose a rigid build that does not flex there. The guide to measuring products for a box shows how to take the inside dimensions we need.

Inserts and Linings

An insert keeps the contents where you placed them. For chocolates, a vacuum-formed tray with individual cavities stops pieces colliding and smudging. Card inserts with die-cut holes suit jars, candles and lip balms. Foam or velvet-covered pads with slits hold rings, earrings and pendants.

Linings change the feel when the lid comes off. A plain white interior looks clean and modern; a printed pattern or a contrasting colour adds a little surprise. Satin-effect and velvet-touch papers are popular for jewellery boxes, where the inside is as important as the outside.

If chocolates will travel by post, ask for a tray with a lid film or a small card pad on top. It stops pieces lifting out of their cavities when the parcel is turned on its side, which is exactly what happens in a sorting office. For chocolates and sweets in particular, our heart sweet boxes for confectioners come with insert options sized to individual pieces.

Print and Finishes Worth Considering

Rigid heart boxes are usually wrapped in a coloured paper with the logo foiled on the lid. Deep red, blush pink, black and ivory are the classic colours, but brand colours work just as well and often look more distinctive. Foil in gold, rose gold or silver catches the light along the curve of the lid; embossing gives the logo a raised, tactile feel.

Folding card hearts are printed in full colour and laminated. Matt and soft-touch laminations feel luxurious and suit muted palettes; gloss suits bright, playful designs for sweets and party favours. A spot gloss pattern over a matt background gives a subtle shimmer without adding the cost of foil.

Ribbon is the finishing touch on many heart boxes. We can fix a ribbon pull to the base so the lid lifts easily, or punch holes for a tie that wraps around the whole box. If you are weighing up foil against spot gloss, our comparison of print and finish options lays them side by side.

Who Orders Heart Boxes

Chocolatiers use them for gift selections and anniversary ranges. Jewellers order small rigid hearts for rings, necklaces and bridal gifts. Wedding and christening favour makers buy folded card hearts by the hundred, often with the couple's names or the baby's initials printed on top. Gift shops stock them empty for customers who make up their own presents.

Candle and beauty brands use heart boxes for limited editions and gift sets, often in a smaller run alongside their standard packaging. Florists sometimes fill large rigid hearts with preserved roses, using a block insert to hold the stems at an even height. Brands that want another shape on the shelf next to the hearts often look at six-sided custom hexagon boxes for the rest of the range.

Ordering, Proofs and Delivery

Tell us the size, build, quantity and what will go inside. We send a custom quote by email within one working day and a free proof that shows the heart outline, any insert and the artwork placement. Folding card hearts and most rigid hearts are made in four to seven working days after proof approval, and delivery is free and tracked to UK mainland addresses in two to three working days.

Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a jeweller or favour maker can start with a modest run. Small folding card hearts start from £0.25 each. Any misprinted or damaged boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. You can also start by sketching your idea in Design Your Box with your artwork before asking for a custom quote.

Heart-Shaped Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering Heart-Shaped boxes.

Should I choose folding card or a rigid heart box?

Folding card suits favours, sweets and lower-priced gifts and ships flat. Rigid board suits premium chocolates and jewellery, where weight and a lift-off lid matter.

How are heart boxes measured?

Across the widest point of the two lobes, from the top dip down to the point, and by depth. Because of the curves, the usable space is smaller than a square box of the same size.

Can you make a chocolate tray to fit the heart?

Yes. We size a cavity tray to your chocolates and trim it to the heart outline so each piece sits in its own pocket.

Can the box be lined with velvet?

Rigid hearts can be lined with velvet-touch or satin-effect papers, and fitted with a pad for rings or earrings.

Can I print names on favour boxes?

Yes. Names, initials and dates are popular on wedding and christening favours. You will check every detail on a free proof.

Do you make nested sets of hearts?

We can produce graduated sizes with matching curves so they stack inside one another or look like a set on display.

Which finish looks most luxurious?

A coloured wrap paper with a foiled logo on the lid is the classic choice. Soft-touch lamination with a spot gloss pattern also feels high quality.

Will the box arrive flat?

Folding card hearts arrive flat and assemble in seconds. Rigid hearts arrive made up because the board cannot be folded.

What do heart boxes cost?

Small folding card hearts start from £0.25 each. Rigid hearts are priced by size and finish, and we send a custom quote by email within one working day.

Can I add a ribbon?

Yes. A ribbon pull fixed under the base lifts the lid neatly, or we can punch holes for a ribbon that ties around the box.

Can heart boxes have a window?

A clear window in the lid works well for sweets and preserved flowers. We keep a printed border around it so the curve stays strong.
