Fudge Is Not Like Other Confectionery
Chocolates sit politely in a moulded tray inside a chocolate box with dividers. Fudge does not. It is cut by hand, it softens in a warm shop, it can sweat a little butterfat, and the pieces are rarely identical. A box that works for truffles can leave fudge sliding about or marking the board, so the packaging has to be planned around how your particular recipe behaves.
Crumbly Scottish-style tablet holds its shape well and travels happily in a plain carton. Creamy Devon-style fudge with clotted cream is softer and benefits from a greaseproof liner or a coated inner face. Fudge with whole nuts, honeycomb or a chocolate top layer needs a little more depth so pieces do not rub against the lid.
Tell us which type you make and roughly how firm it is at room temperature. That one detail shapes the board choice more than anything else.
Three Formats Confectioners Rely On
Most fudge makers settle on one or more of these, depending on whether they sell by weight at a counter or in fixed packs online, and a printed marshmallow box often shares the same dieline.
- Slab cartons: a shallow tuck box or sleeve and tray that holds a single bar of fudge, often scored for breaking. Neat for farm shops and tourist gift stands.
- Cube selection boxes: a lidded box with a card grid or paper cases holding six, nine or twelve pieces in different flavours. The classic gift purchase.
- Small favour boxes: a two or three piece pillow box or mini tuck carton for weddings, hampers and hotel turndown treats.
- Window boxes: any of the above with a clear panel so the crumb and colour of the fudge do the selling.

Linings, Coatings and Keeping Butterfat in Check
Unlined folding boxboard can show grease spots within a few days if the fudge is soft. There are three straightforward ways round this. The first is a greaseproof or glassine sheet folded into the base, which is cheap and gives a pleasing crinkle when opened. The second is individual paper cases for cubes, which also stops flavours transferring between pieces. The third is a board with a coated inner face that resists marking.
Food-contact grade board is available on request, and it is worth asking for if your fudge touches the carton directly. We will note the board grade on your quote so you can match it to your own food records.
If you vacuum pack or flow wrap your fudge before boxing, a standard white or kraft board is perfectly adequate and keeps the cost lower.
Sizing a Fudge Box Around Your Cut
Start with how you portion the fudge. If you cut 25 mm cubes, a box of nine needs an internal space of roughly 80 x 80 mm plus a little for paper cases, and enough height for the tallest piece; the measuring guide for custom boxes explains the clearance. Slab cartons follow the tin you set the fudge in, so measure a finished bar rather than the tin itself, since edges are often trimmed.
Weight matters for counter pricing. Many makers sell 100 g, 150 g and 250 g packs, and it is easier to design boxes around those weights than to fill an existing box and see what fits. Weigh a few portions, measure them, and send us both numbers.
Give the lid a few millimetres of clearance above the fudge so it does not press into soft tops or decorations such as a pecan half or sea salt flakes.
For fudge sold by weight from a slab at the counter, a flat-packed box in two sizes is usually enough to cover every order.
Designing a Box That Says Homemade
Fudge sells on warmth and nostalgia, so the most effective boxes tend to look crafted rather than corporate. Kraft board with a two-colour print, a hand-drawn illustration of the kitchen or farm, or a simple stamp-style logo all fit that mood, as they do on our brownie boxes for the same shops. A small panel listing the flavours inside helps gift buyers and saves you writing labels by hand.
If your fudge is a premium product sold alongside wine and cheese in a deli, a deeper colour with gold foil works well and justifies a higher price point. Either way, leave space on the base or side for your ingredients and allergen sticker, or ask us to print a blank panel where it can go.
Flavour stickers on a common box are a sensible way to run a wide range without ordering a separate print for each one.
Fudge Boxes for Hampers, Favours and Corporate Orders
A surprising share of fudge is bought by someone who will never eat it. Hamper companies, wedding planners and businesses sending client thank-yous all want a box that looks good beside other products and survives being packed tightly with jars and bottles in a larger gift box. For hampers, a slim, rigid-feeling carton with a matt finish and a clear brand mark holds its own next to a bottle of wine without being squashed.
Wedding favours are a different exercise. Couples usually want their names or initials on the box, and sometimes a colour that matches the table settings. A small pillow box or two-piece cube box holding two pieces is the common choice. Printing a generic design and adding a personalised sticker or ribbon is the most practical way to serve lots of couples from one print run.
Corporate orders are often larger and fixed to a date. Here a co-branded box, with the client's logo on the lid and your maker's mark on the base, keeps everyone happy. Ask for a proof of both versions together so you can see them side by side before anything is printed.
Whatever the occasion, a printed tear-off flavour card or a short note inside the lid adds a personal touch for very little extra.
Cut a Batch, Count the Pieces and Send Us the Cube Size
Fudge boxes are sized from the knife, not the tin. Cut a batch the way you sell it, measure one cube or slab across its widest face and at its tallest point, and count how many pieces go in each pack. Nine 25 mm cubes need a different box from twelve, and a thick-set slab needs more height than a thin one. Decide if pieces sit in paper cases or on a greaseproof liner, because soft fudge marks plain board and the lining changes the internal size. Food-contact grade board is available on request if fudge touches the box directly.
Email the fudge type, the piece and pack sizes, the number of flavours and your window preference, and a custom quote comes back within one working day, with minimums priced per job so a small kitchen can test a flavour. A free design proof follows once the structure is agreed. Production runs 4 to 7 working days from approval and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days, a realistic window for a weekend market restock. Makers who sell by the bag at markets often add small printed paper bags in the same artwork.

Fudge Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering fudge boxes.
Will buttery fudge leave grease marks on the box?
Soft fudge can mark plain board over time. A greaseproof liner, paper cases or a coated inner face prevent this, and we can suggest which suits your recipe.
Can you make a box with a grid for mixed fudge flavours?
Yes. A card grid insert holds each cube in its own cell, so flavours stay separate and the box looks orderly when opened. Paper cases can sit inside the grid if you want both.
Is the board suitable for fudge to touch directly?
Food-contact grade board is available on request. If your fudge is wrapped first, standard board is fine and costs less.
What size box do I need for a 250 g slab?
It depends on how thick you set the fudge, but around 150 x 90 x 28 mm is typical. Measure a trimmed bar and we will size the box around it.
Can I add a window to show the fudge texture?
Yes. A clear panel on the lid lets customers see the crumb and colour, which helps fudge sell itself. We position it on the proof so it lines up with the pieces underneath.
Do you print flavour names on each box?
We can print separate versions per flavour or a shared box with a blank flavour panel for a sticker. The second option is better if you change flavours often.
Is kraft board a good choice for fudge?
Kraft suits the handmade feel most fudge brands want. It takes one or two colour print well, and you can add white ink or foil for contrast.
Can fudge boxes be posted as they are?
A folding carton is not built for the postal network on its own. Pack boxed fudge inside a small mailer, or ask us about a printed mailer box sized to hold one or two fudge boxes.
Can I order fudge boxes in small quantities?
Yes, minimums are low and we quote each job individually. Simpler styles start from £0.25 per box on larger runs.
How long from proof to delivered fudge boxes?
Production is 4 to 7 working days after approval, then 2 to 3 working days for free tracked delivery to the UK mainland. A grid insert or a window adds no extra time once it is on the approved proof.
Can I put allergen information on the box?
Yes, either printed directly or on a blank panel for your own label. Keeping it on a sticker makes it easier to update if your recipe changes.
